Summary
On a routine run over the Vietnam war-zone your chopper is taken down in VC territory. It’s up to you and your squad to make it out of the VC infested region while liberating civilians. You’re in total command as you make your way through war-torn Vietnam and eliminate the VC insurgence.Command your squad of up to four soldiers at once. Use the Touch Screen to issue commands, view the map, access inventory and select which squad member to control. 20 different jungle missions include rescuing POWs, saving civilians, hunting down VC, and more. Utilize your squad to combat multiple enemy types including: soldiers, tanks, turrets, enemy barracks, etc. Take advantage of different specialties and weapons per solider: long range shot, grenade launcher, automatic weapons, etc. Beware land mines and other traps throughout war-torn Vietnam. Flush out enemies with smoke grenades or take out a swarm of VC with fragmentation grenades. Destructible environments filled with barrels, crates and animals add to the war experience. [Majesco]

Deeko
This is a rare case in which a budget minded title is actually of more merit than many full priced titles currently on the market.

Entertaining stuff. Well worth a look for "Cannon Fodder" veterans. [Dec 2007, p.85]
VideoGamer
It does, however, offer plenty of gameplay for your money, particularly with the inclusion of bonus levels that offer a slightly different challenge to the main game. My only complaint is in the lack of any multiplayer mode.

Operation: Vietnam doesn't win any bravery medals for its concept, but it's a well-trained, impressively executed idea that hits all the necessary targets.

At first the game may seem to take away a little bit of control with the weapon lock-on, but in the heat of the battle you'll feel lucky that it has your back. [Oct 2007, p.89]
Cheat Code Central
For a budget title, Operation: Vietnam is a pleasant surprise.

A slightly slow, single-player only arcade shooter. It has ten levels (plus ten bonus missions), above average graphics for a DS game, and a decent auto-aim that can't quite compensate for the fact that you can't strafe, and thus spend a lot of time running directly into enemy fire.

An enjoyable little blast through the sweaty jungles of Vietnam, with a gung-ho storyline and knowingly cheesy, Rambo-esque phrases. [Dec 2007, p.69]
Game Revolution
The presentation shines, from the clean visuals to the seamless in-game hints and banter. Even the missions themselves are named after songs appropriate to the era, such as “Bad Moon Rising” and “Break on Through”. You don’t often see a budget DS action title that is “understated” or “cool” in any way, but I have to give it props on both counts.

The game does a pretty good job of delivering a play style reminiscent of classic top-down action games, and the addition of fun bonus missions is, well… a bonus.

As it stands it offers pretty good value. But when put alongside other games, it starts to look pretty tired.

The concept of a squad-based action/shooter done in a style similar to some of the older classics like Contra and Ikari Warriors is a fair one, but the frustrations of control and the indistinct visuals take away any potential there might have been. What you're left with is a game that's just mediocre – but the foundation is there.

Indeed worth $20 for fans of classic top-down shooters. It's certainly frustrating and is a bit on the short side, but it does provide some fun moments and some shining points that make it worth noticing.

There are 10 basic levels, plus a bunch of challenge-style bonus levels that can be unlocked if you can bear the plodding, outdated gameplay, unresponsive controls, uninteresting graphics, and average sound. Otherwise, frustration and boredom are likely to see Operation: Vietnam being traded in very quickly indeed.

Maps are too long and slow-paced when they should be frenetic and bite-sized.

free Bug gave it a9:
I got this game after playing Killzone. I was looking for another isometric 3d shooter and this game is FUN. Its not historically accurate, its a shooter and the missions are challenging. This game won't disappoint given its price of only $20.00. Awesome. Its a keeper.
Dave P. gave it a9:
This is great fun - takes a while to get going (1st level is a bit slow) but then the action really kicks off. Brings back happy memories of Cannon fodder and the like.
