Age of Empires: Mythologies
Stars indicate the most critically-acclaimed games. |
On a routine run over the Vietnam war-zone your chopper is taken down in VC territory. It’s up to you and your squad to make it out of the VC infested region while liberating civilians. You’re in total command as you make your way through war-torn Vietnam and eliminate the VC insurgence.Command your squad of up to four soldiers at once. Use the Touch Screen to issue commands, view the map, access inventory and select which squad member to control. 20 different jungle missions include rescuing POWs, saving civilians, hunting down VC, and more. Utilize your squad to combat multiple enemy types including: soldiers, tanks, turrets, enemy barracks, etc. Take advantage of different specialties and weapons per solider: long range shot, grenade launcher, automatic weapons, etc. Beware land mines and other traps throughout war-torn Vietnam. Flush out enemies with smoke grenades or take out a swarm of VC with fragmentation grenades. Destructible environments filled with barrels, crates and animals add to the war experience. [Majesco]

Entertaining stuff. Well worth a look for "Cannon Fodder" veterans. [Dec 2007, p.85]

Nintendo Power
At first the game may seem to take away a little bit of control with the weapon lock-on, but in the heat of the battle you'll feel lucky that it has your back. [Oct 2007, p.89]

NGamer UK
An enjoyable little blast through the sweaty jungles of Vietnam, with a gung-ho storyline and knowingly cheesy, Rambo-esque phrases. [Dec 2007, p.69]

Game Revolution
The presentation shines, from the clean visuals to the seamless in-game hints and banter. Even the missions themselves are named after songs appropriate to the era, such as “Bad Moon Rising” and “Break on Through”. You don’t often see a budget DS action title that is “understated” or “cool” in any way, but I have to give it props on both counts.

IGN
The concept of a squad-based action/shooter done in a style similar to some of the older classics like Contra and Ikari Warriors is a fair one, but the frustrations of control and the indistinct visuals take away any potential there might have been. What you're left with is a game that's just mediocre – but the foundation is there.

Boomtown
There are 10 basic levels, plus a bunch of challenge-style bonus levels that can be unlocked if you can bear the plodding, outdated gameplay, unresponsive controls, uninteresting graphics, and average sound. Otherwise, frustration and boredom are likely to see Operation: Vietnam being traded in very quickly indeed.
