| Pogo Island |
 |
Pogo Island offers an easy to learn but challenging to master level of enjoyment that will make hours feel like fleeting minutes. Each of the games -- Word Whomp, Poppit!, Phlinx, Tri-Peaks Solitaire and Squelchies -- is skinned to a playful island theme that transports you to an island getaway. Above and beyond the five puzzle games is a fun and unique meta-game that sets players on an island-wide adventure mission to reunite with stranded Pogo mascots. Along the way, players will collect tokens which can either be translated into bragging rights amongst peers or transferred to Pogo.com, where players can reap the benefits of being a token guru. The only major drawback of Pogo Island is the island concept itself. Rather than including the board game and the poorly conceptualized minigame challenges, including a greater number of Pogo.com games would have been a better choice.

This might be a great collection for fans of the site, or someone who wants something quick and easy for the DS, but unless you spend hours playing flash games, you might want something deeper.

Nintendo Power
The dot-com's DS companion packages five of its world and puzzle games into a board game set on a deserted island, and throws in a handful of simple action games that help advance the escape-from-the-island story. [May 2007, p.88]

Game Informer
The offerings are generally pretty decent (Word Whomp, Tri-Peaks Solitaire, and Poppit! are among the best), but there should be a lot more, considering that the website has hundreds to choose from.

Those already committed to the games from Pogo.com on offer here might appreciate this portable package, though it still feels a little lean.

Cheat Code Central
It's a short game if you just plan to play adventure mode, but for those that frequent POGO.com it will be fun to achieve tokens even when they're not online. Playing the minigames once in a while is not out of the question either.

The casual games in Pogo Island are good for a few minutes play, but they don't have enough of that addictive quality to stand by themselves. Five in a pack is a decent start but it's clearly not enough because I was really looking to get more out of this compilation.

Sure, uploading tokens to one's Pogo.com account is a great idea, and wireless competition against friends will keep people busy, the product feels disappointingly limited. Good for rabid Pogo fans, but everyone else should stick to meatier products, most notably Nintendo's "Clubhouse Games."

Don’t get us wrong: there is fun here. It’s just that there isn’t much for the amount of money you pay to get it or considering the volume of work EA had to pull from.

Word Whomp was the primary reason I wanted this game, and it’s disappointing to see puzzles repeat themselves. It’s also disappointing to see the game say, "That word is not in our dictionary," when the PC version finds it every time.

There's so few games, and it gets so madly repetitive, that you may as well spend your pennies on the site itself. [June 2007, p.70]

It looks great on paper, but in execution it just isn't enough.

If you're a gambler and need something to wean yourself off of the online poker sites, then you could do far worse than playing with the relatively benign token system at Pogo.com. On the other hand, if you're a gamer looking for a compelling puzzle diversion, then you could do far better.
