This game won't only entertain retro-fans, it is very motivating, because of the increasing difficulty level. Join the fight of the gods!

Overall, Populous DS is a fantastic game that will find a warm reception with any who remember its previous releases. It's easy to recommend the game to those who may have played it 20 years ago and would like the chance to step into godhead again.

The DS version of the classic Populous title is a nice trip down memory lane, but lacks the complexity and ease of control found with the original.

If you’re a hardcore strategy gamer craving a deep and involved strategy game then you won’t find it here. Yet if you want to relive the glory days of gaming then don’t miss out in playing Populous again.

This DS remake accurately reproduces the strategy of the original and adds a few modern graphical flourishes, but it definitely feels dated.

It works well enough with a bit of practice, though, and 50 complete scenarios in the single-player challenge mode add up to plenty of time spent playing god. [Oct 2008, p.106]

I imagine if you can get a group of friends together to check out multiplayer it'll help extend the life of the game quite a bit as well, and I definitely suggest it to both players that have never tried Populous before, and to those that remember the game from back in the day.

Populous DS can be addicting once you get past the quirks that are unique to this series. This god-sim is an incredible challenge, and it's a refreshing shift from more modern, conventional RTS games.

It's fun in short bursts but this hasn't been updated enough to compensate for its rather shallow gameplay. [Mar 2009, p.83]
ImpulseGamer
Populous fans may want to find another platform to relive their memories.

One of the most important works of Peter Molyneux is finally on its way to Nintendo DS with a very concrete offer: a classic RTS adventure with the original engine system and with nothing new except for being the first time in years that this franchise takes its place on the market.

It is a shame they had not taken advantage of the opportunity to revive one of the classic PC strategy games, to improve on it and add it some more game options, which would have made it a recommended game not just for nostalgic gamers but also for newcomers.

In a game packed with natural disasters, it's a shame the biggest disaster of them all is how Populous has turned out on DS. [May 2009, p.84]
1UP
Populous DS floats somewhere between a time-waster and a strategy game, but it never provides the addictive "hook" of either genre.

The sad effects of aging in all their glory. Populous used to crack top ten games lists in 1990. Populous DS isn't even one of the top ten games this issue.
Even fond memories of the 1989 original can't disguise the fact that Populous isn't relevant or fun almost 20 years later.

This deserves pride of place in a gaming museum, but sadly not in your DS.
The addictive hook that was there at the beginning no longer holds your concentration in the year 2009; even gods aren't immortal and while Populous will always have its place in gaming history, most of its worshippers have long since moved on to the more sophisticated simulations that resulted from Populous's bold and, at the time, groundbreaking design.

The original god game will find itself short of worshipers, with gameplay that's as old as Methuselah.

Populous should not have been re-released - remade and updated most definitely, but not merely re-released.
