Summary
Race Driver: Create and Race has been designed from the ground up for Nintendo DS and lets players thrash the most formidable sports cars through closely-fought races on the world's most prestigious circuits... and then lets players create their own circuits with a full track construction kit. Using the DS stylus, the game's track editor lets players select and place race track elements, such as hairpin corners, long straights and chicanes, to design unique circuits. Once all the pieces are placed to perfection, players can take to their track and experience exactly what it's like in aggressive multiple car races. In addition to the track editor, the game features 32 real-world circuits – from Silverstone and the Nurburgring to Bathurst – and 25 officially licensed race cars, including the AMG Mercedes C Klasse D, and the Chevrolet Silverado Truck. Making use of the Nintendo DS Wi-Fi connection capabilities, players can challenge others to races on the game's official tracks as well as the circuits of their creation. Race Driver: Create and Race also enables up to four players to go head-to-head in races gamesharing from only one cartridge. Further championships and cars can be unlocked from the World Tour Mode and then raced in realtime online and ad hoc multiplayer modes. [Codemasters]

Despite the extreme challenge, Race Driver is a gripping, adrenaline-soaked experience.

This surpasses expectations. It looks great, has fantastic online features and the course editor is brilliant. If only the cars felt a little more like cars. [Oct 2007, p.90]
IGN
A very impressive console-level arcade-style racer that pushes an incredible list of features and creative elements.

A great little racing title that deserves to do very well indeed. If you're after a fast-moving arcade racer for the DS then stop looking now - you've found it. The long Career mode, excellent multiplayer and inspired track designer will keep you coming back again and again, long after most other racing games have made their last pit stop.

Seldom do you see so thorough an effort put forth by a third-party developer, and on the Nintendo DS at that. It isn't a perfect racing game, but its sheer variety of vehicles, tracks, and game modes, as well as the ability create custom tracks and cars for online use, make it a great gaming value.

Race Driver: Create & Race is a very competent game, well thought out and executed. It contains everything that the racing fans could expect from the DS, while retaining the spirit of the series.

Not exactly the kind of thing you'd expect to see on the DS, and certainly not in as slick and professional a package as this. Well worth a go if you're into your racing sims. [Nov 2007, p.62]
Pocket Gamer UK
Difficult but rewarding, Race Driver: Create & Race earns a place on the winner's podium, even if it doesn't play fairly all of the time.

If you buy racing games for longevity, innovation and the old-fashioned thrill of besting human opponents, Race Driver's DS debut comes highly recommended.

A fairly simple racing game with tons of extra content and options that keep the game fresh and challenging.

Race Driver pushes the DS hardware to its limits, and the result is a deep and enjoyable racing game.

I still enjoyed Race Driver: Create and Race, and as far as racers go on the DS, it's definitely one of the better ones I've played.

With tons of modes and options initially available and more goodies to unlock as you win races, you'll be pushing the pedal to the medal for a long time to come. [Sep 2007, p.87]
Game Chronicles
I will admit I was frustrated a few times when I failed to complete some of the challenges or kept getting my butt kicked in some of the Championships but, I loved it.

Race Driver: Create & Race is an extremely well assembled racer which falls short of excellence thanks to its handling style falling squarely between two stools, and the niggles relating to the opponent AI and graphical in-game presentation.

It wins with the track editor but loses in other areas. Hit and miss basically. [Nov 2007, p.69]

Crashing is probably something you should get used to before jumping into Create & Race, though, which brings us to the primary problem with putting a simulation racing game on a handheld like the DS.

It’s the most complete racing game on the DS but it’s not the most fun...There’s a lot of content but not without the sacrifice of the gameplay and of the visuals. [Dec 2007]

Sean M. gave it a0:
I can't believe the scores this game got, it's one of the worst games I've ever played, not just the DS, control is near impossibe, and literally is once enough damage to your vehicle, menus are half-assed, most glitch, and are rendered worse than someone using MSPaint, online is dead, even the highscore lists aren't even full, but chances are you won't have the sanity to play the game long enough to get to those races. 0/10, first time I've ever fully felt like a game deserved it, I'm not even going to look at another codemaster or firebrand game.
San C. gave it a9:
Pros: Very fast paced and great depth. The multiplayer online is hilarious and fun. Highly addicive when playing with a human element. Cons: Multiplayer should show who's online and option to join playes...then again...it's probably too much for the DS to handle. So, pple, if you love racing games, buy this and meet me online for some serious racing!
boy racer gave it an8:
This is a fast, slick and fun racing game, a real surprise on the DS I have to say. Its got loads of content and unlockables, so single players will be kept busy for a good while trying to complete everything. Once you've done that you can design and race around your own tracks, which is awesome, and then there's the all important multiplayer over Nintendo Wi-Fi, where you can race against friends, rivals or random people. There are a few rough edges and controls are sometimes a bit flaky (or maybe it's just that I'm a bad driver!). It's not a realistic racing sim, the cars do slide all over the place, more like the space racers in FX Zero than the super sports cars of Pro Gotham et al. Graphics are good for the DS and everything that needs to work, works pretty well. If you like racers you'll get a whole lot of fun out of this.
Craig O. gave it a10:
Wow! This has to be the best racing game on the DS, it might even be better than mario kart! The editor is loads of fun and really gives the game legs, you'll not get bored of this for a long time!
