(Also known as "New Rainbow Islands") Rainbow Islands Revolution is an update of a Rainbow Islands, the sequel to Bubble Bobble, taking the form of a platform game where the player must ascend through vertical levels that are slowly sinking into the ocean. The objective of the source material is to reach the top of each level, taking out any enemies in the way by firing magical rainbows that can trap or eliminate foes as well as providing bridges for the player to walk on. Rainbows remain onscreen for a short amount of time but can be ?broken? by the player if they jump on them. Once broken, the rainbow will fall off the screen, taking out the first enemy it touches. The game also features a pleasing bonus item system where dispatched enemies leave behind items of food that have varying point values and power-ups that have a range of helpful effects. The major feature of this re-interpretation is shifting the entire game away from traditional controls by implementing a global touchscreen control system which radically alters the way in which the game plays. The game is also displayed across both screens of the DS. Rather than being fired by a button press, rainbows are now drawn directly onto the gameplay area using the stylus and movement is executed by dragging the player?s character around the levels. The objective is still to reach the top of the level, but the time limit has been extended to account for the player being unable to move and use rainbows simultaneously. Rainbows are now broken by pressing the stylus onto them. [Atari]

Rainbow Islands Revolution makes great use of the touch screen, aside from being a fun and addicting puzzler.

View this as a new game and not a remake of a classic one and you'll find some colourful, stylus-waving fun. [Apr 2006, p.47]

Gaming Horizon
Rainbow Islands Revolution will only appeal to fans of the original game who are accepting of the new changes. Other than that, it really doesn’t offer anything new when it comes to touch-focused games because other games, like Kirby: Canvas Curse, does it better and with more polish.

The graphics, audio, and overall gameplay still come across as decidedly old school, but this touch-centric platformer does at least manage to revive a classic in a way that some people should find interesting.

For a game of this calibur, you would need plenty of unlockables or other features, but sadly the game is lacking in that area. As another slap in the face, the original Rainbow Islands wasn't even included! [JPN Import]

A massive improvement on the previous Taito-related DS efforts issued to date. As short-lived as it is, and despite some irritating control and level design issues it's a lot of fun.

Fans of the original will no doubt like it more simply because it's based on Rainbow Islands and shares many of its virtues, but newcomers may find it somewhat lacking. [JPN Import]

Rainbow Islands Revolutions is too simple and too short to be called either revolutionary or a classic.

One of those games that lacks any flavor (or fun), it's sort of the stale saltine cracker of DS games.

This is by far the most disappointing of the Revolution series to date. Whilst the changes made to the game have been done to accommodate the various features of the Nintendo DS, the fact is that it just doesn't feel like Rainbow Islands. Key elements are missing, including the all important strategy of the original.

And the game requires players to buy their own copies of the game in order to take advantage of the multiplayer, which is unacceptable considering the game is far less system intensive than some other DS games that support the handheld's Download Play option.

Anyone who thoroughly enjoyed "Yoshi’s Touch & Go" will find Rainbow Islands Revolution to be a worthy title in the vein of that game. The rest of us are left with an island that’s a little too monotonous to hold our interest.

And levels that bit wider than the DS screen? Irritating and just plain rubbish, a bit like this game. [June 2006, p.79]

RIR is an interesting attempt at delivering arcade-style touch-screen thrills, but it falls short in execution. [Oct. 2006, p.90]

A passing diversion, totally bereft of the addictive zeal of the original. In this case that's a step forward, if only a very tiny one.

The game does try to differ with unique modes, including Story and Score Attack, but with the faulted gameplay and the basic presentation, the game never really gets over the rainbow.

Worth Playing
If this port/ remastering/ remake/whateveryou'dcallthis of Rainbow Islands Revolution was created with so little effort, I wouldn't recommend anybody make the effort to pull the box off a shelf and trade currency for it.

Colorfull, oldskool, touchscreen, straightforward, iceclimberlike. If you like the 80's arcades, this one is just for you.
