GameZone
This is almost a case of “what could have been.” While the game itself isn’t a bad game, per se, it’s not a very good game, either. There just isn’t enough content.

A standby on Nintendo handhelds since Game Boy Color, River King has taken to DS touch control like a fish to water. [Feb 2008, p.90]
Cheat Code Central
River King: Mystic Valley seems to be somewhat of a fall from grace for the series.

Shallow, repetitive and just plain odd, Harvest Fishing is definitely a catch and release. [July 2008, p.89]
IGN
As far removed from the original experience as we could imagine. The visuals are astoundingly basic, there’s almost no music in the entire game, fishing is nearly automatic now compared to the challenge of previous versions, and the end result is a game that lacks the very core of what made River King so special in the first place.

While the story mode is relatively short and generous in opening up new areas fairly quickly, fishing these days is far better suited to mini-game distractions in bigger titles than something like this.

Tedious and incredibly unrewarding. [Aug 2008, p.65]
Game Revolution
I like the concept of River King, the endearing characters, and even the tranquility of the landscapes, but the focus is way off-target.
