Summary
(Known in the UK/EU as "Mystery Detective") After her father unexpectedly passes away, Mackenzie inherits the family business: a renowned detective agency in a fantastic world of mystery and intrigue. With the aid of her investigative assistant Funghi and her faithful servant Cromwell, Mackenzie sets off to prove herself worthy of being called... the Touch Detective. With the DS stylus, players can guide Mackenzie through crime scenes, talk to witnesses, and discover new evidence. Touching mysterious objects, people, or places allows essential case cracking clues to develop. The dual screens also enable players to simultaneously view clues, inventory, and maps throughout investigations. Features four thrilling full-length episodes with an additional 20 mini-quests. Gather evidence, question witnesses, and wrack your brain to crack the case! [Atlus Software]

A unique little adventure game with loads of style, fun characters, and plenty of charm.

I understand that the slow-paced adventure gameplay isn't for everyone, but there is so much to love here that I firmly urge each and every one of you reading this right now to open your mind and try it for yourself.

All but the most hardcore adventure gamers or those totally smitten by the art style and characters will easily bore of the game halfway through the second case.

Touch Detective’s old-school, slow-paced gameplay may not be for everyone, but fans of the genre will enjoy the quirky aesthetic and witty story.

For those looking for a nostalgic adventure game experience, you'll be pleasantly surprised, at least in function. For anyone else, Touch Detective offers a quirky and off-kilter, albeit short and at times frustrating, adventure.

Despite the relative brevity of the experience, I can honestly say that Touch Detective is an excellent game to go through... but only once. It's disappointing that the game is so short, because the eccentric cases and endearing cast just deserve to have more than just a brief few hours in the spotlight.

Touch Detective definitely stacks up in the same category as the Phoenix Wright games, by being a game that is fun for being a well written, quirky title and not for blowing stuff up endlessly.

It's also fun, with a story is further shows the potential of the Nintendo DS as the new home for adventure gaming. That's the good part. The bad part is that the game only features four cases and a handful of forgettable side stories, with very little replay value.

Atlus did an excellent job further augmenting this with another great, humorous localization: whoever came up with the unexpected and hilarious, "Murder case! Woot!" remark should be applauded.

Touch Detective is packed with such funny dialgue and stylistic quirk that it may take a few hours to realize that it isn't a very good game. [Nov. 2006, p.146]
Official Nintendo Magazine UK
Mystery Detective looks great but is lacking in the gameplay department because the puzzles are often too obscure to be worked out properly. Trial-and-error isn't much fun. [May 2007, p.84]
Deeko
Just don't expect it to change the way you look at games and I think you'll really get a kick out of it.

Point and click newbies may find some of the puzzles challenging but most people will be wishing for more adventure and depth to Touch Detective.
Experienced gamers will probably look for more than what Touch Detective has to offer--both in story and gameplay--but Touch Detective will be a nice diversion for the younger set. [Dec. 2006, p.109]
Adventure Gamers
It will tide you over until "Phoenix Wright 2" comes out, but it's nothing special.

Touch Detective is packed with goofy characters and funny dialogue, but its overly opaque adventure game puzzle designs prevent it from being much fun.
The package is littered with confusing puzzles, uninformative AI, and an overall shallow experience that will have players wandering the town more than using their head, and it won’t take long for the novelty of the game to wear very, very thin.

Touch Detective's greatest failing -- winning is rarely a rewarding experience.

Funny and frustrating in equal measures. [January 2007, p.77]
Electronic Gaming Monthly
I am certainly a big fan of the game's vibrant, anime-inspired graphics, but with no replay value and a lot of frustrating, nonsensical puzzles, Touch Detective isn't quite worth solving. [Nov. 2006, p.141]
games(TM)
There’s no visual distinction between what is and isn’t interactive – and the fact that some items are ridiculously small and innocuous brings much gritting of teeth. [Jan 2007, p.102]
GameSpy
Touch Detective has great stylized graphics, interesting-looking characters, a simple interface, and humorous writing, but it all adds up to nothing when the core storyline and gameplay are so lackadaisical.
Touch Detective is terrible in all the ways that make an adventure-puzzler (like the aforementioned Phoenix Wright, or Monkey Island, or Grim Fandango, or etc.) worth its salt. Go spend your £20 on Cluedo, because at least then you're controlling the pathfinding.

Bob R. gave it a7:
Not at all as bad as some would have you believe, this game mixes traditional point-and-click gameplay with some utterly charming art direction, wacky humor and puzzles that only rarely reach frustrating. my main criticism is that it is too short! i ripped through all four cases in only a couple of sessions, although the bonus case is a little nicety. I get the feeling from some of the more negative reviews that they didn't find it so easy... I give it a B.
Diesel 360 gave it an8:
Classic Point - n - Click Adventuring comes to the DS. Touch Detective boasts responsive controls, w/ a styus only interface, that work quite well on the DS touch screen. The graphics are crisp and clean with a nice sense of style that matches the quirky gameplay nicely. If your looking for a take along game reminisent of some of the early Monkey Island stuff - then, look no further.
Robert J. gave it a9:
Incredible graphics! I couldn't stop laughing at the dialogue! A true point and click adventure game and a must buy!
