Summary
In Unsolved Crimes, players assume the role of a rookie detective as part of the New York police department homicide division. An aspiring model, Betsy Blake, has disappeared and a social outcast and loner is the prime suspect. The case is deeper than it appears on the surface. Crime is rampant in the city and Blake's disappearance is the latest in a frightening series of events that are slowly bringing New York to its knees. The local police department is having a hard time cracking the case and Blake's safe return lies in the detectives' hands to solve the mystery before it's too late. Unsolved Crimes integrates three gaming elements - an action game, a 3D crime investigation and a crime quiz - to provide players with a unique, absorbing experience. The game fully utilizes the DS's unique Dual Screen, allowing players to immerse themselves in the New York environments. The innovative use of the stylus allows players to trace marks, routes and memos on suspicious items discovered at crime scenes, all allowing players to move closer to solving the kidnapping mystery. The engaging storyline runs throughout the game, fully immersing players in the world of Unsolved Crimes with more than eight independent cases to solve in the diverse and fully interactive environments. Unsolved Crimes strikes me as being a really good game because of its consistent story, thrilling cut scenes and interesting cases! My own power of deduction, intuition and perception are trained. One has the feeling of solving the case on his or her own. A good mixture of being obvious and suspense!

As a straightforward puzzle title, it’s nothing special, but the overall package makes this one more than playable.
Worth Playing
Despite a ho-hum presentation and some odd design decisions, Unsolved Crimes is definitely one of the more solid adventure titles on the DS.

All in all, I was surprised by how enjoyable Unsolved Crimes was to play. While I want to be careful not to oversell this modest game, the fact is that it can be a fun little package of murder to carry around with you.

A solid but unspectacular adventure. With a little less hand-holding and a bit more longevity this could have been great. [Dec 2008, p.76]
Hardcore Gamer Magazine
The strict linearity of the game’s thirteen cases means that you’ll have little reason to replay the game, but the clever logic puzzles and mini games give you plenty of reason to play through it at least once.

Never gets bogged down in the endless conversations of, say, Phoenix Wright. [Christmas 2008, p.107]
Games Master UK
A little bit throwaway but a nicely put together CSI-sim. [Christmas 2008, p.84]
Official Nintendo Magazine UK
If you can find this for slightly cheaper then go for it. It's fun but doesn't last very long. [Dec 2008, p.77]
IGN
The developers could have added more style and polish, but if you're just looking for a decent adventure game this should do the trick.

Fans of forensic analysis and a decent mystery yarn presented in starker, more realistic tones than other DS games will enjoy this title, and we hope it becomes a franchise like Phoenix Wright, hopefully returning with more grisly crimes and more interaction with suspects and witnesses.

Unsolved Crimes is a game that makes a brave attempt to give the gamer the feeling that he's actually a detective that's investigating a homicide. The first couple of levels are nice, but after a while the game keeps repeating itself. Maybe if you're a gamer with great stamina or a secret desire for repetitive games you will have some fun playing this game.

A point-and-click detective adventure which is a touch too linear and not particularly daring with its plot or characters. That said, murder mystery fans will enjoy the gradual whittling down of suspects through evidence gathering and problem solving.

There's a series of interesting crimes to solve in this DS adventure, but uncovering the truth is just too simple.

Unsolved Crimes is not a terrible title, but it always feels lacking in some way across each aspect of the game.

The most depressing part of the game, presentation aside, is in the way that it always backs off from its potentially challenging, thought-provoking route and pitches you a rather rudimentary series of multiple-choice answers.

Unsolved Crimes offers some original and interesting cases to be solved, but hardly manages to rise above its everlasting mediocrity. Luckily, Nintendo DS-owners have a lot of great alternatives at hand to actually have some fun solving crimes, like the beautifully crafted Professor Layton.

Ultimately, this was an ambitious game for the DS, and it's reaching just slightly too far.

Fans of CSI-type games may find it makes the grade, but for everyone else, there’s just not enough here to warrant much of a look.
