Summary
The third entry in the Valkyrie Profile series. Wylfred was but a boy when the valkyrie claimed his father's soul and sealed his family's fate. In the agony of the aftermath the boy swore revenge, and now for the man, the time has come to reap it. To the valiant she comes, and so to the battlefield he goes. Destiny awaits.

Nintendo Power
Feels fresh and unique. [Apr 2009, p.89]
NintendoWorldReport
An excellent strategy game with many interesting mechanics that make it unique in the DS library. Tri-Ace did a fantastic job of blending in various elements of the Valkyrie Profile series and successfully applying those elements into this genre.

An amazing game. A perversion of the JRPG formula that is a must for fans of dark themes and morally complicated subject matter.

An extremely adult and dark story makes this tactical RPG game one of the best you can find on any handheld. Fortunately, the playability itself keeps the pace with the story. [July 2009]
Worth Playing
Minor complaints aside, Covenant of the Plume is a fun and unique strategy RPG, and it's a solid addition to any DS owner's RPG library.

This is a polished SRPG that stands out from the crowd thanks to some unique battle mechanics. The enemy AI feels a little lazy at times, but the game still provides a nice challenge. The real draws here are the high-minded script and team-up attacks.

Despite being scaled down to fit on the handheld, this is another fine addition to the DS's huge RPG roster.

CotP is the worst game in the Valkyrie Profile series, but it is definitely my favorite SRPG on the DS.

Thanks to alternate endings, multiple plot paths, side quest, and the dark twist of sacrificing friends, there’s a lot here to keep you happy with hours of fun. Square Enix has introduced an interesting concept to their Valkyrie Profile concept and I hope they continue to think outside the box when it comes to re-imagining their franchise games.

This is an excellent tactic RPG game, of epic and tragic character and with a noteworthy technical skill which will please every genre fan. It is a shame that, considering the complexity of the game, it hasn't been translated to Spanish.

The title's refreshing accessibility also makes it a perfect entry point for those new to this under-the-radar franchise. [Apr 2009, p.84]
Games Radar (in-house)
We had a great time with Valkyrie Profile, and it has great replay value with multiple endings and branching stories. However, the difficulty spikes randomly during the battles, and that’s hard to look past.

Covenant of the Plume is a wonderfully diverse game with a deep and involving story that makes this one of the more rewarding Valkyrie Profile games available.

Not bad at all. [May 2009, p.75]
Games Master UK
Does the strategy things very well but is let down by a glum story. The 'sin' stuff is neat. [June 2009, p.75]
InsideGamer.nl
Although Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume has its deficiencies, the game manages to distinguish itself from other strategic role-playing games. The great, gloomy story and the action-packed fighting are but some of the nice aspects of the game. The best aspect of Covenant of the Plume is that the game forces you to sacrifice team members, so that you become emotionally attached to the game. Therefore, you tend to forgive the game for its few minor mistakes.

Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume is an excellent strategy game and another unique Tri-Ace game in this genre. It has a great replay value, multiple endings, an involving story and a deep battle mechanic. The users will be glad to receive the famous Valkyrie Profile series in their handheld, although this tittle is not the best game in the VP series but one of the best strategic RPG on the NDS.

The story is the main reason to play this title, as the overly complex rules system makes battles a bit too cumbersome for any real replay value.

If the design were just a little tighter, and the presentation just a little crisper, I am convinced that this game would be one of my all-time favorites. As it is, I still find Valkyrie Profile's gameplay and branching storyline fascinating, and I will absolutely be adding it to my personal collection.

Tri-Ace's latest Valkyrie Profile is a mixture between the usual style of the genre and the personal soul of this franchise. Covenant of the Plume is just another fair SRPGs that can presume of an intriguing story, lacking a better gameplay system. Its a fair game for the fans, but it's far away from the excellence of the original VP.

As it stands, however, Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume is still a great game for either starved SRPG fans or those looking to get their feet wet with a multi-branching title that lets you choose your destiny.
Fans of the series might consider this entry to be the worst in the series, but compared with many other strategy RPG’s on the DS, this one is actually quite solid.
Fans of the series will likely still find plenty to enjoy here, but may have trouble getting into it. Covenant is not a bad game, but on a system overwhelmed with RPGs, this one really needed to be exceptional to stand out. Instead, it falls a bit short of greatness.

Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume is a rather enjoyable experience overall.
This may superficially resemble any of a dozen other DS SRPGs, but it has many twists and a clever, manipulative philosophy at heart that lifts it above the crowd. [May 2009, p.97]
Thunderbolt
For a cerebral experience like no other and a simple, addictive gameplay setup, Covenant of the Plume is an excellent choice.

An unexpected, but largely successful, change of pace as Norse melodrama meets strategic role-playing.

In the end, Valkyrie Profile series completists will probably enjoy it, but I'd tell most other people to steer clear.

Valkyrie Profile: Convenant of the Plume has one of the most dark and dense histories we remember in a game. The new combat system, though, is a big mistake as it makes the game monotonous instead of fast and direct.
With multiple endings and 20 potential allies to recruit across the adventure, as well as a tough bonus dungeon once it’s complete, there’s the promise of longevity here. But few will venture back to this curio once the end credits have rolled.

Covenant of the Plume is a tolerable, if undistinguished, strategy role-playing hybrid.
In its attempts to fuse grid-based combat with the series’ RPG roots, Covenant of the Plume doesn’t capture the essence of either, descending into a jumble of mismatched design decisions.

Combat is fun, but you realize that the game has to cheat a bit to make it work.
And come on, Square Enix, I know you want to re-release more of Square's back catalogue, but trying to sneak an FFTA remake past us with another title on the box is just bad form. Try VP: CotP if you like, but don’t be shocked if you end up ditching Wylford and his stupid hair for Marche and his.
Trying to combine peanut butter and jelly into a delicious sandwich, tri-Ace instead takes two very different battle systems and combines them into something like ice cream with poached eggs on top. The tactical parts alone are decent with lots of customizability and strategies to ponder, and the Valkyrie Profile system is about as good here as it is in the first two games in the series, but instead of meshing and working together, they pull against each other as the player is left wishing he had just one system or the other.

C. Block gave it a9:
Covenant of the Plume is a very underrated game. It uses the series classic battle system, but with a slight differences. The game also uses a SRPG system similar to Final Fantasy Tactics. I feel that this game is more a spiritual successor to FFT than FFTA and FFTA2 are. This game is not to be missed by anybody who enjoys SRPGS!
