Summary
Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2007 expands upon the series' realism with faster gameplay, more responsive control and improved artificial intelligence. Players will now make intelligent runs without the ball, identifying opportunities and pointing to where they would like the ball to be delivered. Similarly, the game is now more physical, with defenders jockeying for position and strikers working to turn their opponent as they receive the ball. The game's shooting system has also been refined, letting players take more snap shots, while volleys have been updated for more player control. Players can also enjoy the Beautiful Game in more ways than ever before with new play modes. International Challenge mode lets players compete through four continents of opposition to become a champion, while Random Selection Match lets gamers take the field with a group of players selected at random from a predetermined league or geographic area. The Master League mode returns with more options, allowing players to take complete control of their favorite team and control its destiny for an extended period of time. The game's roster of teams is also expanded with new, fully-licensed international teams for players to use including Argentina, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden, as well as additional club teams. Even with some recycled content, and the bland menus, Winning Eleven boils down to one key aspect that no other soccer title has; great core gameplay.

Overall this is a solid title that Soccer fans will love. This is the perfect Coffee Break game for the DS, a match only takes about 5-10 minutes to finish.

Winning Eleven has a few too many niggles to trouble the really big scores, but Konami have still pulled a little cracker, complete with celebratory backflips, out of the (onion) bag. [January 2007, p.68]

On the whole, if you want a football game for your DS then I would probably recommend sticking with Fifa 2007 for an overall better experience in terms of atmosphere, match presentations and content. [JPN Import]

The good news is that it's reasonably fun. The bad news is that the AI is spotty and overall production values are on the low side.

Konami have produced some excellent animations to counteract the poor graphics (which nothing can really be done about), and Wi-Fi play is a wonderful addition. However, when compared to the rest of the versions that are available, there is little reason to grab the DS version, unless you don't own a PSP and really want to play soccer on the move.

Konami's first attempt at bringing the seminal soccer series to the Nintendo DS may not appeal to serious fans of the sport, but it has some interesting features and isn't too bad when played in short spurts.

Even though it doesn't bring you scores of official international teams in the way that FIFA 07 does, it does let you play against other Winning Eleven players all over the world. [Mar. 2007, p.86]
IGN
Even with the compromises Winning Eleven for the Nintendo DS is a let down simply due to the DS team not keeping the same tight competition the console teams have with it and the FIFA franchise.

An engaging kickabout then, but the dated gameplay means this is a pale shadow of the brilliant WE that we know and love. Maybe next time, eh?

Winning Eleven Pro Evolution Soccer 2007 translates poorly on the Nintendo DS and, while online play is definitely a plus, the hardware slows down the fast-paced soccer action considerably.

Pro Evo keeps everything simple, to its benefit and detriment. Seasoned footie fans will probably want to pass, but youngsters just starting the sport should get some decent mileage.

Konami should keep its superstar soccer experience off of this dual-screened handheld, and leave it to EA to make mediocre sports titles.

This isn't playing to the strengths of the DS, and it isn't comparable to its PSP cousin. You expect this kind of low-end mediocrity from shovelware DS titles with "ponies," "horses" or some kind of sick animals in the title, but Konami can, and should, do better than this.

The gameplay is often too slow to deliver that immediate rush handheld games need, and at the same time avoids any real need to use strategy for those wanting to put in hours of dedicated play.

Our advice: If you're dying to play a handheld soccer game, upgrade to the PSP, where Winning Eleven 2007 is the real deal.

While the DS has some nice multiplayer functionality, there’s no doubt that the PSP version is leaps and bounds above the DS version.

Zeeshan K. gave it a10:
The best I've ever saw, the game play is fantastic. Only thing missing is the league games.
Andrew E. gave it an8:
Okay, it's not perfect, but how many games from a home console on a handheld are. The graphics are not particularly good, but the gameplay is great! It brings the best football game from home consoles onto a Nintendo handheld and does it very well!
Gordon D. gave it a1:
Online multiplayer is good and the game really harks back to the days of ISS but it is very old fashioned, very poor graphically, poor audio and lacks gameplay depth compared to modern football games. I'm a massive pro-evo fan (PS2 version / 360 one is also poor) but alas I can't believe I'm saying this, FIFA on DS is actually better. There I've said it, now flame me, but I'm being honest, Come on Konami you can do better.
