Summary
Players can challenge others from all over the world via multiplayer battles using a wireless connection as they command their worms through clashes that take place in famous battles of the past, as well as fictional fights of the future. Battles include the Spanish Armada conquest in "Pirates!," the frontlines of real war in "World War II" and laser shooting spaceships in "Space War!," among others. In addition to the classic Deathmatch mode, the game also includes robust new single and multiplayer modes such as Rope Race, Fort, Puzzle and Campaign modes that challenge players to use new strategies and teamwork to defeat their enemies. The new Firing Range allows gamers to test their weapons skills, including 11 new weapons like the Bunker Buster and Buffalo of Lies as well as classics such as the Super Sheep, Concrete Donkey and the Holy Hand Grenade. Gamers that take the battle online will be able to demonstrate their Worms combat prowess with daily updated stats and leaderboards on the official Worms website. Players will also enjoy the new, in-depth customization options including custom landscape and team flag editors in addition to modified hats, tombstones and victory dances for their worm teams. The bottom line is that Worms has always been a fantastic game so it all comes down to how complete a given installment is, and Worms Open Warfare 2 is easily the defining title in the series. [Oct 2007, p.87]
NintendoWorldReport
There are no sacrifices, no compromises, and no settling for second best here. Two Tribes has gone above and beyond the call of duty and have created an instant classic. This is truly the best Worms game ever made.

OW2 still looks and sounds great though, and offers more content than any Worms before it. It might have scored even higher if it had been $10 cheaper (it would have truly been a must-buy for all DS owners at $20), but it's still an excellent value and a wonderful addition to the portable action-strategy lineup.

Open Warfare 2 combines the franchise’s polished gameplay with several new modes and a robust online component to create the best Worms title in many years.

Overall, Open Warfare 2 is a far superior product to the original Open Warfare game on the DS.

This is truly the Worms game that many fans have been waiting years for. It is easily as good as the earlier Worms titles and since it is portable, it can quench your Worms addiction no matter where you may be.

A terrific game. The gameplay is simple, fun and forever addictive, and it's coupled with chunky, colorful graphics and a multiplayer system which has served as the de facto model for many other titles.

It's the same old Worms at the core, but it's the franchise at its best. [Sept 2007, p.72]
IGN
A massive upgrade to the original game, so much so that it really should have been its own brand instead of "Number Two" of the 2005 release.

It's simple, it's retro, and it's extremely hard to put down once you get started. And excellent package on DS. [Nov 2007, p.58]
GamingExcellence
Much like almost every iteration of the series, Worms: Open Warfare 2 does not seek to completely revolutionize the series, but merely adds another layer of weapons, modes, and customizations.

What you have here is a solid game and an excellent purchase for anyone owning a portable system.

With far too much new content to list here, it offers a brilliantly rejuvenated experience to die-hard fans and a reason for the wandering flock to return. [Oct 2007, p.118]
GameSpy
THQ, Team 17 and Two Tribes have not only turned out the best Worms game of all time, but a title that stands on its own as a truly excellent piece of DS software.

The Campaign mode offers a little variety with slightly varied missions and even some boss battles, but if you’ve never liked Worms’ brand of zany, artillery-heavy 2D action, well, not much has changed.

Despite some frustratingly expert-level AI in the compute opponents, Open Warfare 2 is one you don't want squirming away from you. [Nov 2007, p.104]
GameShark
If you're hoping for a core multiplayer experience, however, you'll likely find Nintendo's Wi-Fi network too frustrating to deal with.
Read Full Review >Digital Entertainment News
This is a great game for DS Wi-Fi, and for once it is one that isn't made by Nintendo themselves. There is may not be much more to this game, but for fans that should be more than enough.
Tightly woven gameplay makes this a great addition to the series. If only more touch screen could have been implemented.
While the graphics are certainly less polished than what you’d find in the PSP version, they still retain the typical Worms feel.
If you're a veteran of the series and you want something new, there are a few new options and some sprucing up compared to past games, but this isn't the end-all-be-all for the franchise, and the customization really isn't implemented as well as it could be.
Though the additions and adjustments to the standard Worms experience aren't game changing, the playful violence and light strategy still hold up.

A combination of cheeky grins and exploding donkeys makes Worms: Open Warfare 2 a simple and enjoyable slice of handheld action.

Were THQ holding a bazooka next to your head demanding that you play Worms: Open Warfare 2 or they just might pull the trigger, then it might be worth turning on.

A solid Worms game but one that's not particularly well tailored to the DS. [Oct 2007, p.84]

2 thumbs up, for two tribes! Finally a real deal worms game. This team should have been on the original project, which was a nightmare. This game rightfully should be titled "Worms Done right" For any worms fan contimplating on to purchase this game....get it now before you have to spend more time trying to track down this classic gaming title.
Eric M. gave it a10:
Great game and fun to play u get addicted it is better than the old pc versoin and origanl open warfare except the big donkey is just weird.
Blue Falcon gave it a9:
This is the best worms to be released on any system for a long time. It makes it one of the best games on ds.
Thomas W. gave it a9:
Very nice game ! So much better than the original Worms released for the DS in 2005... Wi-Fi makes it the perfect Worms game, and all of the mini-games included using perfectly the stylus and blowing into the microphone makes it worth the price.
Ben A. gave it a9:
Having never played a worms game before I didn't know what to expect. I am blown away at the highly addictive and perfectly paced gameplay. The fort mode is an awesome idea, i recommend this to anyone who likes strategy games.
Zak C. gave it a10:
This is actually the first Worms game I've picked up since playing a demo of World Party for the PC and prior to that the original Directors Cut for the Amiga, and lets just say I'm (if you pardon the expression) blown away at how well executed it is. Two Tribes have done wonders on Team 17's flagship franchise. The campaign mode has just the right difficulty curve for "one more go", some of the puzzle stages appear to be the work of some sort of sick genius (no bad thing), and the laboratory minigame stages are a lovely touch at giving the DS version that unique feel. But of course that's not what people are buying the game for, it's the online multiplayer. Heck that alone justifies buying the game, in fact I'm willing to put it up there with Mario Kart DS as a must-own wi-fi title.
