Summary

Sonic Adventure DX is Sonic The Hedgehog's third blazing-fast quest on the Nintendo GameCube, and the ultimate version of one of Sonic's biggest SEGA Dreamcast blockbusters. Featuring enhanced graphics, sound and Game Boy Advance connectivity, Sonic Adventure DX pits Sonic and his pals against the dastardly Dr. Eggman and his wicked plans for world domination.

GameZone

This game offers tons of different things to do that include: six different playable characters, a new mission mode, and even the Game Gear Sonic games.

Nintendo Power

The levels are inconsistent in their difficulty and some of the play mechanics - fishing, in particular - are frustrating, but the game offers a lot of play. [July 2003, p.145]

73

GameSpy

The additions are nice, yet it's obvious that Sega didn't even try addressing the well-known shortcomings of the Dreamcast game.

GMR Magazine

The game alone is worth the price of admission, but this version features an all-new Mission mode that, while fluff, is nonetheless fun, plus 12 entirely cool Sonic games taken wars and all from the Sega Game Gear. [June 2003, p.72]

Village Voice

Thrilling and refreshingly buoyant, Sonic Adventure DX—Director's Cut actually justifies '90s nostalgia.

Deeko

The graphics, while still brilliant in terms of eye candy, simply fail to live up to gamers expectations simply due to bad camera work and a massive dose of framrate droppage.

netjak

A good way for Sega to make up for the whole "we canned the Dreamcast because it wasn't popular in the US, but we had some really good titles on it that the US liked" thing.

NintendoWorldReport

The gameplay has serious setbacks, but possibly the worst part of Sonic Adventure DX is its cut-scenes. Featuring an atrocious English translation and mind-numbingly horrible voice acting, Sonic Adventure will, at best, leave many players embarrassed for Sega, and at worst, leave them disgusted with the game.

GameCube Europe

The extras are nice but not worth the purchase of a game you already own, especially since the DC version runs smoother.

TotalGames.net

A total disappointment. It certainly has all the bells and whistles that you'd expect, so we have to commend SEGA for that; however, with the quality of the main game being lower that we've come to expect from Sonic's homestead, it's just not enough to justify the asking price.

GamePro

A deeper, more interesting game than its sequel, but the camera and collision problems hurt the overall experience. [June 2003, p.104]

G4 TV

Sonic Adventure DX is at its absolute best during the Sonic and Tails segments. Their levels are what you paid the admission price for. The rest are just leftovers.

Electronic Gaming Monthly

It doesn't look any prettier on the more powerful Cube - the periodic slowdown is inexcuseable (especially in a Sonic game), and the camera is still awful. [June 2003, p.122]

Game Chronicles

The Dreamcast version might not have the fancy new audio and video enhancements but the gameplay is more fluid and ultimately more fun.

If you've already played the Dreamcast version, these extras definitely aren't worth your money.

Play Magazine

While DX is polished somewhat, the ancillary models reamain in a sad state, the pop-up is rampant, the special effects dated, and the collision detection, sadly, is still far from acceptable. [July 2003, p.78]

50

Eurogamer

It's a straight port, with a few minor alterations, and in this day and age it just can't stand up to the competition.

Game Informer

The pumped-up graphics look pretty mediocre at best... the game mechanics are bland and simplistic - like the worst of the Genesis era. [May 2003, p.87]

IGN

There are so many flaws in execution that can't be ignored, either, from one of the worst camera systems in a 3D game to the fact that Sonic himself catches onto the environment and sometimes comes to a dead stop in mid-sprint.

Gaming Age

Sonic and his buddies get hung up on scenery far too often and have trouble hitting what should be solid objects. Characters shouldn't fall through the floor for no reason.

Maybe this DX is redefining film grammar for videogames. Because in this case, director's cut means the same damn thing, complete with glitches and issues of the first game.

Armchair Empire

Sonic Adventure DX should have, could have been so much more than a straight port with a few improvements.

If you or someone you know is interested in Sonic Adventure DX please save my sanity and get "Sonic Adventure 2: Battle" instead.

Cinescape

The camera is by far one of the worst in a 3d game ever. When you’re zipping along, it’s not too big a deal, but in any sort of exploration mode you might as well just give up now.

Game Revolution

The Game Gear titles are a welcome bonus, but having to play through the broken game just to get them is a hassle.

GameNow

This version isn't as good as the original. There's a lot of choppiness going on, most of the lighting effects have been dialed down, and the soundtrack is scratchy and distracting. [June 2003, p.39]

Cheat Code Central

A dated game that is today belittled by the very games that it helped inspire. I can't believe that this game hasn't been tweaked. It's nearly identical, warts and all to the DC port.

Honesty Is the best policy... T gave it an8:
Ok. This game was not perfection. However, it was not terrible. The chao garden was ok, and the missions were ok. But Big? I understand your want to have diverse levels, but no fishing. It was just insanely boring. Now, voice overs could have been worse, but just try harder. I actually confused the moving mouths of the characters with early mouth speak animations. It was a good game, but it was just a bit boring to me. But hey, thats just my opinion. Also, they should have tried to update the graphics. That would have bumped up my score.

sorcerer 289 gave it a9:
I think this is a great game.It isn't as good as SA2,but it is definetly one of the best 3d sonics. The only real thing that bothers me are Big's missions, they were boring and lame. Another problem are the boring hunting levels. In SA2 hunting levels were large and fun in SADX they are boring. But still, I think this game is great and worth the buy...but only if you are a huge sonic fan like me.

Tyler A. gave it a10:
This is possibly my favourite GameCube game ever. Sonic rocks, the sound and graphics may not be the best but you hav a great game here with LOTS of replay value and if people say I must be an idiot to like this game, I am an almost straight A student so I am no idiot and I know quality when I see it. This game is a must for anyone.

Eddie H. gave it a7:
This game is better than it's sequal. It is way better than their last attempt at a 3D sonic game. Different characters with different abilities added a variety of gameplay. A bad thing was the voice overs, which were kiddy and corny.

Unhappy Sonic Fan gave it a0:
What were they thinking when they made this awful excuse for an 'adventure!' Go back to the Mega Drive sonic, much better!

Andrew W. gave it an 8:
This game is pretty good . It may be a remake but it is still top and a good storyline. There is plenty to do innit and should last a while if you want to get all the emeralds. The only things that let this down are the camera angles and no multiplayer.

J-Max gave it a 5:
It's Ok but the gamegear games suck it really brougt things down but the game was ok I like the graphics. I kinda missed Sonic Adventure but the memories are back. The camera angle sucks real bad at least they have Free Camera Mode on the menu.
