Into Liquid Sky

I understand the need to simplify things for use on the GBA, but even the fact that all the spells use the same art seems a bit disappointing. With that said, though, the graphics do what they should - carry the solid gameplay through.

Luckily there is a detailed tutorial at the beginning of story mode that eases players into the battle system which is a feature that many of the Yu-Gi-Oh! games lack.

All the monsters look like cold-blooded killers that just crawled out of hell. [Aug 2004, p.75]

I liked this card-battle game more than other ones that I have sat down and played. There was a better story, which game you more to do, and it seemed to make the duels more fun as well since I knew that there was a reason behind me doing it.

While it doesn't let you bang away with the 1000-plus monsters available in the Yu-Gi-Oh! games (at least not yet), it does offer somewhat deeper and more complex gameplay.

Sempai Legends is likely to be the first of many games in this franchise, and in that context it is an excellent start. All the important aspects of the original game are here, and work well.

Game Chronicles

There is a good story and a nice rule-based combat system that is easy to learn and fun to master. It might not be as good as the real thing but as a GBA title it’s a solid title with a few pleasant surprises.

The learning curve is a little steep and not everyone may enjoy losing dozens of battles before they finally get the hang of it. However, it should be noted that with 120 cards from the original card game as well as 60 cards from the expansion pack, Atari is extremely faithful to the source material.

Despite it’s aesthetic weaknesses, Sempai Legends is a good trading-card game and definitely a match for its competitors.

Duel Masters is a fun and fairly addictive game and the GBA version is faithful enough to be worth a look-in if you really want to play it solo on the move.

Duel Masters throws one duel after another at you with little reward beyond a new card and making it one step closer to the end of the game. You’ve got to really like the Duel Masters card game or else this will get old and fast.

If you're a fan of the trading card game, you should find this enjoyable enough for practice or when no opponents are around. [Summer 2004, p.28]

The duel system is solid, but poor production values (ie, no artwork for the cards) and slow-paced gameplay drag down the game a notch or two.

If you already like Duel Masters, have lots of the cards, and like its game mechanics, go ahead and get the GBA version. It sports a whole lot of what you already like. But if you are like me and are getting quite burned out on the whole card battling scene, this game most definitely will not change your mind about it.

Yes that’s right, it’s boring. A card based game lasting ten minutes is ideal for filling in during break time, mighty convenient whilst waiting for the bus to turn up, even a mild diversion from the stares of fellow passengers when on the bullet train, but just plain old dull when sitting in the house on your own at ten o’clock at night.

The entire package is just out there riding the coat tales of the involving Yu-Gi-Oh games, or the incredibly diverse and playable Pokemon titles. As such, I urge every hard working parent to opt for one of those for their kids instead.

Terry G. gave it a 10:
This game is addictive! I'm happy that it comes with a tutorial because I have never played the actual card game before. The game is fun and challenging plus it allows you to think and strategize gameplay instead of just "shooting" through levels. I also love being able to link up with my friends to trade cards; a VERY cool feature!

Rocco S. gave it a 10:
I'm a big fan of collectible cards (collecting stuff will be my doom), so I tried out Duel Masters. Somebody told me to try out the game if I wanted to learn the game mechanics quickly and have a good tutorial on how to play. So I went on and bought the Sempai Legends. Now, for once, a cool game based on cards! Lately Yu-Gi-Oh has been providing us with some of the worst stuff on the planet... The Sempai Legends has everything you need: 1)A whole set of cards from which to custom make your deck (and some cool folio "real" cards inside the box). 2)A fun story mode that gives you the possibility of exploring a cartoon style world while trying to catch an evil dueler who has robbed one of your most precious cards. 3)Easy to use menus: customizing your deck is fun and quick. 4)Cool card graphics, great 2D anime-like graphics for your character and environment. Nice music. 5)...but especially... AWESOME MONSTERS. Not little cute Pokemons, or strange Egyptian freaks...HUGE SHARP BAD DUDE MONSTERS with cool powers and weapons that battle each other using their special attacks. I started playing the card game after I went through the video game. Listen to my advice, buy the video game then play the card game! If you already play the card game, create your deck in the video game and get to train your skills. Some in-game duelers are really strong and use intelligent deck strategies.
