While the series hasn't changed drastically in its 9 year history, the latest Metal Slug is still, for some inexplicable reason, hard to put down. How many series can you say that about?

What with the outstanding gameplay, the longevity of playing the beautiful levels over and over and the cracking sound effects, I say get Metal Slug Advance! It may be the greatest 2D shooter to hit the Advance.

Those familiar with the NeoGeo console games will marvel at how accurately the essence of the game has been capture in terms of graphics, sound and gameplay.

Almost everything that was so great about the coin-op versions is found here. [Feb 2005, p.80]

If you like shooters, you would be a fool to not own this game. It's not the best Metal Slug - its easier, has less branching to the levels, and the animation is not as smooth - but it's still awesome.

The most exciting aspect of Metal Slug Advance is just how well the game design works on the GBA platform.

Though the game has only five main missions, it's high difficulty and 100 collectible cards guarantee a long playing time. [Feb 2005, p.116]

It's a little on the short side, since you can endlessly retry each section until you succeed, but fun while it lasts.

Some aspects of it are ridiculous and annoying (lack of a quick save, card collecting). However, the levels are tuned perfectly, the graphics have a lot of hidden polish to them and the overall package is more a labor of love than just a cash cow capitalizing on nostalgia.

Metal Slug's first foray onto the GBA is a resounding success. Even though Metal Slug Advance is a brand-new game, it has all the sights, sounds, and charm of the NeoGeo games it's based on.

Some gamers may find it too short or frustrating, but it’s a must-have for shooter fans.

To put it plain and simple, Metal Slug Advance is one of the most entertaining Game Boy Advance games of the year, and if you even find the game easy enough to beat it quick, you'll want to keep going time and time again to improve your skill.

In the short time it takes for you to complete it, you'll probably experience a few unique adrenaline pumping moments that will inevitably bring a smile to your face. Don't worry, for an action game-.no, a Metal Slug game, it's only natural.

It’s a testament to the Metal Slug series that the movement to the Game Boy Advance, a medium known for marginalizing and, ultimately, diminishing the play experience of ported games, has not lost any substantial quality in translation. The run-and-gun, cartoonish action is as abundant and entertaining as ever.

While some of you may be annoyed by the title's difficulty adjustment, namely, the inclusion of a power bar and unlimited continues, you'll still be amazed by the intense action that the game offers, and its collection system is pretty sweet as well.

Despite the limitations, it's an incredible feat that SNK was able to get a GBA game to look and play this well on its first try.

Even the hidden cards, which seemed like a lame gimmick at first ended up being a, well, pretty cool gimmick. If you're a fan of Contra and its ilk, you should give this one a try.

The game contains an unprecedented amount of detail to make this experience as close to the previous Metal Slug games as possible.

It's a challenging game, but that's Metal Slug for you - everything you liked about the previous games, you'll find here, and that's no small feat on a small platform. [Feb 2005, p.103]

SNK has done a remarkable job of creating a new Metal Slug experience that feels nearly perfect on the small screen. Frenetic action, great graphics, and classic, refined gameplay are all highlights here.

While its old school side-scrolling shooting action may not appeal to younger gamers, an older GBA-playing crowd will appreciate Metal Slug Advance and its high challenge level.

A good game, but it has it faults. Graphics aren’t nearly as good as the series is known for and the slowdown really gets to you in some parts of the game.

A fantastically fun title, and is a credit to SNKP, who have managed (with considerable skill) to bring the distinctive tang of Slug to the masses. Although easier by far than its arcade brethren, at least this means the game has a chance of finding a (mass?) market ' a shrewd move by the IP's new masters.

It still offers frantic side-scrolling action, but doesn't live up to the glorious old-school fragfests of recent titles like "Metal Slug 3." [Dec 2004, p.190]
Gamestyle
The basic gameplay of Metal Slug Advance is quite entertaining and fun - whilst slightly marred by additions that are rather pointless and don’t add anything worthwhile to the experience.

The GBA does a great job of keeping up with the arcade version. Graphically it impresses, with tons of sprites and gunfire lighting up the screen (a bonus for non-SP owners) although the sound can be a little squelchy. [Jan 2005, p.100]

Something that followers of the series will appreciate. It does have it's shortcomings, like it's short, pretty easy and is your standard run and gun game without two player support.

Sadly, Metal Slug Advance is the worst game in the franchise with the stupid health bar, insane difficulty, shoddy frame rate, unknown playable characters, lack of a co-op link mode, and merciless respawning enemies.

The bosses are either too easy or too irritating. And most of the great enemies we saw in the recent Xbox release are nowhere to be found, leaving dull soldiers and a scattered few fun baddies.

It just doesn't feel like the same series we've come to know, and follows the traits of similar action games of today, rather then the simple style to that of our yester years. It has its fair share of problems sure, but still remains fun.

Matt S. gave it a9:
Awesome game, however most of the bosses are insanely hard even on 'normal' mode (which is the easiest mode they have) and can get really frustrating....I haven't tried 'hard' mode but it's probably impossible.
J. L. gave it a9:
Great game! no complains here! Follow the traditions of Metal Slug.
Joshua M. gave it a10:
What are you people, crazy?!! This is possibly one of the best GBA games there is to date, why would you guys think it sold out almost as fast as Halo 2 on its release date. Truly a game worthy of the name "the best there is." Plus the best part is that althought its just another Metal Slug game, it is just another Metal Slug game that you can play, on the go! if you don't have a GBA, then you have no soul to play this game.
Aaron L. gave it a10:
Metal Slug Advance rocks my socks!! Its every bit as good as the Coin-Op games.
Fernando gave it a9:
d@#$#mn good.
Dain Q. G. gave it an 8:
This is probably as close to a true Metal Slug game as the GBA could (or will) possibly get. The "insanely hard" bosses, as in all Metal Slug games, have discernible patterns and can be bested with some trial and error. Amazingly, most of the weapons of the previous games are intact. The more gruesome death animations and blood have been cut out, but in turn The Slug seems as alive and "breathing" as ever, a trademark animation style of the series. Many top-tier GBA games have been said to be too short (Metroid, Castlevania). The trend to alleviate this problem has been the card-collecting aspect. This game is no different, and some cards are quite fun to play with, and change the landscape of the game a smidge...but this fun tinkering won't last as long as it will take for the sequel to come out. A great ride while it lasts, like most great GBA games.
K Dog gave it a 3:
Too short, too boring, not enough real action. Bosses are insanely hard. Bring back Metal Slug 2 & 3!
