It’s the closest thing to a vaguely taxing "Banjo Kazooie" -style adventure we might ever get.

The sound effects are brilliant and blend well with the cartoonish atmosphere of the game.

Colorful graphics combined with challenging gameplay.

A great game...The only things that slightly detract are the shortness of the overall game, and the sameness of many of the mini-games.

So much has changed...for the better. Improved, tighter controls, more tasks to complete, more variety in the level design, a longer quest, and a better use of the isometric perspective.

The controls are tight, the graphics are great and the gameplay is diverse and filled with mini-games.

It looks better, it sounds better, it plays better, and it's ultimately more enjoyable than the original.

The only downside to this fabulous adventure is the tricky controls. The digital directional pad doesn’t allow for smooth diagonal movement, which Spyro does a lot in each world.

Controlling Spyro hasn't improved. It’s still incredibly awkward trying to control him while gliding, as he'll go zooming off all over the place with the slightest touch.

Sadly, there's little depth in Season of Flame.

Game Informer

The jumping portions of the game are still a little iffy, and I killed myself quite a lot from misreading the view, but in the end I enjoyed exploring the worlds. [Dec 2002, p.152]

Although Spyro 2: Season of Flame is a very well produced game, the difficulty of it may turn away many players, myself included.

Season of Flame would benefit from better control and more objectives apart from collecting a bazillion trinkets, but the graphics, humor, and puzzles are engaging enough to warrant a purchase for devotees of the purple dragon.

While not the most complicated game of the year, does deliver a small serving of fun. At the least it's the sort of title that forces players to work up a bit of the old hand-eye coordination.

The action is presented in the same style and is shown from the same isometric perspective as Spyro's last GBA adventure. [Nov 2002, p.228]

It's all pretty standard platforming fare with nothing to really distinguish it from the rest of similar titles except for the license.

While the size of the game and the sheer inventiveness of the many levels are admirable, such problems with core elements of the engine make play unfulfilling.

Spyro 2’s major and quite glaring shortcoming – boredom. There’s plenty to do here, but none of it really makes you want to carry on the story through to its end because none of it is particularly fun.

Tom G. gave it a 9:
To be honest, I was quite pleased at how the first Spyro turned out for the GBA. The only gripe I had with it was the persp[ective in which the game was played. Once you got past that, it was a blast to play. Now, the second one is out and what do I have to say about it? Well, Season of Flame is even better. With better graphics, gameplay and control; who could ask for more? My only gripe is the ingame music. It just doesn't fit the Spyro mold. It seems forced. At any rate, though, This is a Spyro game through and through. Spyro:Season of Flame is an exceptional game. Not to be missed by the masses....
