Psygnosis has improved the appearance of the tracks for the N64, while maintaining the futuristic feel found in previous Wipeout titles. The raceways blur by at breakneck speed, and the sleek post-post-modern approach to the backgrounds will drench your eyeballs with colorful imagery. The different anti-grav lanes can begin to look similar, but the track design is consistently futuristic. Wipeout 64 sports seven new racing environments, and five individually tuned anti-gravity ships to choose from. To earn the seventh track and the fifth ship, you'll need to demonstrate a mastery of racing skills by completing the three Challenge Modes: Race, Time Trial, and Weapon. [Nintendo]

Wipeout 64 has everything a futuristic racer needs: A healthy variety of tracks, slickly designed craft, weapons, numerous game modes, hidden goodies, and speed, speed, SPEED! This is a must-have for every N64 gamer's library!

Wipeout 64, Psygnosis first N64 effort, is one hell of a ride that is all about new additions, better control, more speed and enhanced graphics. And guess what? Even the music rocks. We think Nintendo 64 owners are in for a real surprise with this one.

Wipeout 64 isn't a bad game by any means. It just doesn't have the same level of adrenaline pumping action and playability that Miyamoto's racer has.

Psygnosis did a killer job with not only track design, but in giving the whole game a feel and challenge that usually only comes with good Formula One racers.

The gameplay of WipeOut 64 is really just classic WipeOut. There are no big innovations here, but that still doesn’t stop this game from being one of the top racing games out there.

Doesn't really add a whole bunch of new twists to the WipeOut-elegance we've known and loved since 1995 but you can't deny that the game is an extremely fast-paced, action-stuffed, super slick interpretation of the experience we found on the seminal PlayStation discs.

Plays exceptionally well. The cool design, well-balanced weapons, challenging courses and blistering speed of the Wipeout games have been perfectly retained in the N64's first encounter with the series.

Sure F-Zero X has 30 tracks and a random track generator, but it is lacking one thing that Wipeout has: variation. Wipeout has more variety and in some cases, better track design. All in all, Wipeout 64 offers a good balance of racing and action.

Adrenaline Vault
Compared to other racing games on the market, Wipeout 64 has one tremendous advantage: its graphics are absolutely gorgeous. However, a racer lives and dies by its gameplay, and Wipeout 64 has that locked up pretty well too. The control is dead-on and the courses are well designed.

All Game Guide
Everything a Wipeout fan could expect and though lacking any massive improvement in the single player mode, the game easily beats out F-Zero X as the best futuristic racer on the 64.

WipeOut 64 isn't horrible, it just feels like the developer's first effort for the system at times - which it is. The one- and two-player modes are worth exploring, but the game will still likely be disappointing for hard-core fans of the series who expected more improvements after the two-year wait.
