Summary
In 1899, Oliver Lavisheart, young adventurous Englishman, accepts to help his uncle Mathew to win a bet: going around the world in 80 days or less to collect proof that the wacky uncle has created 4 major inventions in 4 different cities all around the world. Oliver follows Phileas Fogg's tracks through Egypt, India, Japan, and finally to America. He has only 80 days, or his uncle will lose his bet and will be ruined. For this trip you will become Oliver, discover your uncle's fantastic talents, his adventurous life and his secrets. You will also learn a lot about yourself, the truth about your family and the true nature of this incredible bet. As the game progresses you will help a strange German Archeologist, rescue a distressed - not overly bright actress from Bollywood, organize a SM contest, win an elephant race, drive the biggest airship ever, find a way to make the Scottish tartan the coolest street wear worldwide, fool a shogun's samurai, burn your own boat to go faster, avoid the traps of inspector Fix's nasty son, get into disguise, bribe, steal. There are some frustrations with saves and puzzle implementation, but the game does have solid entertainment value.

80 Days had all of the makings to be a great PC adventure title, but due to a myriad of technical faults and off-putting humor and dialogue the game only delivers a good, solid adventure experience solely meant for fans of Verne’s novel and the adventure genre as a whole to enjoy.

You'll find a lot of personality (and not a little humor) as you make your way through the game but the only thing that's really being challenged here is you patience.

If you've got the machine to run it, and the patience to endure some of its quirks, then this is definitely a game to check out.

It has a good sense of fun and is a little different from your average adventure game. A little more attention to the production values and it could have been a real winner.

Personally, I think 80 Days would have benefited from an extended beta-testing period. This would have definitely made them change the save system, and it would have probably removed most of the bugs too.

Its downsides lie on elements key to an adventure game and cannot be overlooked. Overall though, even though the style will not be everyone’s cup of tea, Frogwares has managed to prove that they can take the genre to new levels and build it around new technology without a need to hybridize it with other genres, and in my book that is highly commendable.

What the game lacks in polish, it somewhat makes up for in cheekiness and an unexpectedly disco-tinged soundtrack. [Nov. 2006, p.120]
Worth Playing
The gorgeous visuals and often-fun puzzles of 80 Days drown underneath the crushing weight of bad design; the poor controls, questionable physics, and repetitive (ad nauseum) elements all hinder what could have been a great gaming experience.

It's a shame there is so much wrong with the game, which at its best mixes architectural splendor with affable goofiness.

If you're a patient person and can forgive technical problems in your games, and you like adventures with a little freedom to roam about in a 3D world, you might get some enjoyment out of 80 Days.

It may sport a literary pedigree, but 80 Days is little more than a clunky adventure game with a bad sense of humor and lots of bugs.

A whirlwind global tour for diehards... and a bumpy ride for everyone else. [Feb 2006, p.77]

80 Days is a reasonably unique title in the sense it targets a genre you probably haven't dealt with in a while, but it fails to offer anything other than a quick fling as the technical issues and the storyline are a let down.

A serviceable adventure game that does a few things new but is unlikely to tide anyone over or bring back renown to the adventure genre.

80 Days could have been a great take on a classic story if more time and care would have been put into it, but as it currently stands it's very hard to recommend the game to anyone.

If they developed this game with the younger audience in mind, then it's a pretty nice game, suited for such a target. If not, then it's a fiasco.

William H. gave it a5:
While this has some fun elements and nice graphics, the humor is generally poor and borders on sexism and racial stereotyping. Add to this the various bugs, including crashing to the desktop, and the dire save strategy, and the game is hard to recommend.
Gene S. gave it a5:
The New York Times review is right on the money. It could have been a great game, but the technical problems ruin it.
