An exciting exercise in completely rethinking old strategies. And this, after all, is what the best expansion packs do: not just add, but entirely revise.

The multiplayer additions elevate the expansion to a must-own. Age of Empires III: The WarChiefs has managed to re-invent and reinvigorate the game. I'm sorry guys. I'll never doubt you again.

Throwing super-powerful native tribes into the mix may not mesh with the history we all know, but it does make every map they inhabit a more dangerous and challenging place. [Jan. 2007, p.57]
VGPub
I can literally play this game for hours on end and it will only seem like 30 minutes to an hour have gone by. Any game that does that must be doing something right in the replay department.

With its many gameplay changes and additions, The WarChiefs has all the right cards to finally break the dreadful curse that has plagued the series’ previous expansions. At the very least, it’s sure to provide much enjoyment to the artistically inclined.

The newly playable native factions don’t perform particularly well, and the campaign is the very definition of average. Some different rulesets for online play may cater to certain fans, but The Warchiefs would come much more highly recommended if it did anything to clean up the messy unit AI that hampers nearly every aspect of play.

The single-player campaign is extremely lengthy for an expansion pack. You'll be getting your money's worth in every way. It took me hours just to get to the second act. Really nice job by Ensemble to offer this much quality content for their fans.

The only problem lies in the hefty system requirements that are required to produce all this eye candy; if you don't have the rig necessary to run it at a high enough setting, you miss out on the true beauty of the game.

More great Age of Empires fun. The new Native American tribes are great, although the single-player campaign is a bit of a let-down.

A pretty good expansion pack. The new Indian tribes are fun, since they all play differently. The campaign has improved somewhat now that the fictional mumbo jumbo events are finally removed. The Warchiefs is a traditional RTS but an enjoyable one. [Dec 2006]
IGN
Some of the Native American concepts offer a nice twist, as does the inclusion of revolutions and monopolies, but to be totally honest, they could just call the game More Age of Empires III and we'd still line up to play it.

It's a tough act to pull off, but The WarChiefs manages to walk that fine line between familiarity and new material quite well. Age of Empires III veterans are going to love it.

Age of Empires III: The War Chiefs hits its target pretty accurately – representing a healthy addition to what’s already there.

The beauty of the WarChiefs expansion is that it's not just a lot of new content, but it's a lot of good new content that affects how the game plays. If you're a fan of Age of Empires III, you're going to be an even bigger fan once you've tried this expansion pack.

Age of Empires III: The WarChiefs lives up to its role as an expansion pack: rather than shaking up the core game, it manages to offer up enough enhancements to make it interesting.

WarChiefs lives up to its role as an expansion pack: rather than shake up the core game, it manages to offer up enough enhancements to make it interesting. Highly recommended for multiplayer, less so for the single-player campaign.

The overall experience ended up being very familiar to Age and real-time strategy veterans, though that didn't stop it from being fun and engaging.

It still doesn't address the simplistic combat. [Christmas 2006, p.77]

There's nothing in its new content that can be considered absolutely essential. [Holiday 2006, p.76]
Game Chronicles
While the additional content is a little light, the game still delivers solid strategy both online and off.

Age of Empires III just hasn't aged all that well. [Feb 2007, p.91]
PC Format
There are no real uprisings to be found in THe Warchiefs' colonies. [Christmas 2006, p.102]
GameShark
If you loved Age of Empires 3, you’ll love the expansion. If you only mildly enjoyed the game, you may have mixed feelings here, and may be pretty let down.

All told, it's quite a lot of newness from an expansion pack, and in many ways makes for a pretty considerable shift from how the original game works.

Lov L. gave it a10:
One of the best expansion packs ever. It introduces 3 playable Native American civs (Iroquis, Sioux and Aztecs) and adds a lot more to the existing Euro civs. by giving them Saloons and a Revolution feature. The game also adds a fantasy element to the gameplay by introducing Fire Pits which grant unique bonuses to Natives when the villies dance around it. The campaign mode has a solid storyline and the skirmish mode is simply awesome and even more varied. The multiplayer mode is ultimate and the online community is ever growing.
