Summary
The invading armada drifts on the horizon, preparing for war. On your order, the battle begins. Explosions break the peaceful atmosphere as the smoke distorts the scene. It was a time when nations fought for naval dominance ... a time of true adventure ... a time unlike no other. It was the Age Of Sail! [TalonSoft]

With an easy control interface, and its incredible graphics, game play and sound, this program is the best in its genre, without a doubt. It is a joy to play.

Truly an interesting piece of work, not only because it is currently the only naval sim, but also because the gameplay and the brilliant atmosphere.

This is the only game in town as far as Fighting Sail games go. "Sea Dogs" is fantastic, but it's got much more of an individual piracy focus. But I don't want to make this like your grandpa tells you, "You're my favorite grandchild," and then you're all like, "But I'm your only grandchild." It's more than that.

If you enjoy strategy games that aren't too in-depth and have a slower pace, this game is for you.

I'd really like to shimmy up to the crow's nest and holler at the top of my lungs that AoS II is without a doubt the be-all and end-all of naval warfare sims. But until they squash all of the bugs that seem to pop up with amazing frequency, AoS II may be looking for a stiff wind to guide it safe passage for several more weeks to come.
GameSpot
The underlying design of Age of Sail II is very good, and its graphics are excellent. In many cases, the drama and tension of the real-life time period are very well portrayed during the scenarios and most of the campaigns. But clearly, the game was published before it was finished.

Much too thin of a manual and buggy play keep Age of Sail from reaching its otherwise promising potential.

What saves Age of Sail II from the abysmal fate that many people on Akella's message boards claim it deserves is the excellent quality of the overall presentation in the music, graphics and sound systems.

The only people who might enjoy the game are those who are interested in the time period or in old-style naval combat, and who can find others to play against in multiplayer games.

Once the game starts up, another problem becomes apparent; the game was rushed out the door before it was finished. From random lockups when loading to a litany of missing features too numerous to list completely, it's obvious that Age of Sail II was released in a beta state.
Happy Puppy
It's interesting enough, and you'd probably get a few hours of gameplay out of it, but it gets tired really quickly. Add this to the fact that the really cool battles -- the ones with lots of ships on each side that might have drawn you to this title--are nearly impossible to coordinate.

The game interface is not easy to understand or utilize. The tiny icons are difficult to make out and the small written cues that pop up at the bottom of the screen are in a thematic naval font that is impossible to read.

TalonSoft deserves a good keelhauling for dumping such a buggy game on shelves. [May 2001, p.82]
Computer Games Magazine
The entire experience is crippled by an obtuse interface and abysmal documentation. All in all, this is one of the most unstable and frustratingly erratic games to anchor in software stores in quite some time.

It's hard to comment on what type of game Age of Sails 2 is, simply because most of it doesn't appear to function.
