Game Info

Publisher: IDEA Games

Developer: Black Element

Genre(s): First-Person Shooter

Players: 1

ESRB Rating: RP (Rating Pending)

Release Date: May 1, 2007

Summary

The player is dropped into the maze of rooms, halls, corridors, mining facilities and shafts of an apparently abandoned deep-space asteroid mining base, facing rebellious machinery of assorted robots and automatic systems, which he has to defeat and demolish, using his weapons and wits. Strong story, fast paced shooting action. However, if you cannot shoot, then there is your RECON, hacking device enabling you to remotely control various devices you meet (robots, manipulators, surveillance cameras, security systems, weapons etc.) on your way through the dark halls and corridors of Alpha Prime. If that's not enough, you can drug your mind and sharpen your senses (bullet time) by injecting a small dose of hubbardium. And all the time you will be surrounded by physical world in a very literal sense, because almost everything that moves, moves thanks to advanced real-time physics algorithms. Features 10 levels full of action; 5 non-playable characters to help you; 14 different enemies including Special Forces soldiers, robots and crazy miners; 8 futuristic weapons including pistol, shotgun, machine gun, grenades etc.; Devices to hack - including a variety of robots and manipulators, surveillance cameras, security systems, doors, etc. [IDEA Games]

Thunderbolt

It's a bog-standard shooter with some cool graphics. Honestly, Alpha Prime feels like the product of a first-person-shooter checklist. It hits all the marks that, if missed, would bring a game's score down. Multiple enemy types? Check. Narrative? Check. Slow-motion? Check. Good graphics? Double check. Aside from the embarrassing acting.

Game Chronicles

There have certainly been far worse games in the extremely well-traveled FPS genre. For what it is, Alpha Prime delivers the goods and ends up being an engaging experience.

PC Format

Pretty but tedious, Alpha Prime is a solid but supremely derivative shooter that's more often a chore than a pleasure. [June 2007, p.60]

GameZone

Alpha Prime is a commendable game that offers a solid FPS gaming experience but lacks the innovation some might expect with a new game.

Worth Playing

It's a fun shooter with a well-done bullet-time feature and a decent storyline. What more could you ask for from a $20 dollar game? Oh, Hubbardium-crazed humans? It's got that too!

Alpha Prime does a great job of being average.

Play Magazine

At 20 bucks, Alpha Prime may be a decent stocking-stuffer for FPS junkies. [Dec 2007, p.97]

Gaming Nexus

When I could shake the feeling that I had been through all of this before in one place or another, Alpha Prime was a pretty good ride, considering that there was nothing particularly new or innovative about it.

Game Over Online

Alpha Prime takes a little from each game but has a hard time carving out its own identity.

The game has huge potential for the long term, even if a lot of it remains unfulfilled at this point.

PC Gamer UK

A pretty shell for a game that's pretty lacking. Not much fun. [Aug 2007, p.92]

For the most part, I’d say that the weak points overpower the few positives in Alpha Prime and because there isn’t anything that’s really new or unique and the sound ruins the intensity, I find it fairly boring. You shoot enemies, watch a cut scene, shoot some more, interact with something, repeat.

Gamer 2.0

Alpha Prime is a very average game. It might have nice visuals that make it look comparable to other games of its ilk, but in the end it suffers from being a truly derivative and under-developed game.

Alpha Prime, with a passable storyline and passable gameplay, is a little passable anomaly. [July 2007, p.77]

Computer Games Online RO

Unfortunately for Black Element Software, this type of game has been done to death, so there were only two options for the designers to consider: a) innovate or b) use the classic recipe, but use it the right way. And even though options b was chose, the results are disappointing to say the least.

Strategy Informer

All in all this game is solidly average. It’s a decent if predictable story saddled with a pedestrian game.

Game Revolution

Were Alpha Prime really fantastic in some specific aspect, at just $20, I would be happy to recommend it to one and all. It isn’t bad – you can have fun playing it and it’s not going to crash inexplicably – but it is an offering exactly matched by its budget price.

PC Gamer

Flashy weapon effects partially mask the mediocre gameplay, and to the untrained eye, Alpha Prime could almost pass as "Doom 3". I trust that PC Gamer readers are smart enough not to be fooled. [Apr 2008, p.66]

Eurogamer

The cinematic cut-scenes are poorly voiced, the characters unconvincing, and the plot is so-so at best.

What Our Users Said

Pyro B gave it a3:
Decent Graphics. Sub-Par physics. Outdated. Generic Gameplay. All are characteristics of a mediocre game. The voice acting is decent, but nothing more. The storyline is barely interesting. There is barely a back story to this game. Overall, its a mediocre sub-par game.

Selkit Diller gave it a3:
Passable if repetitive soundtrack, somewhat pretty visuals, but it's broken. Utterly broken. Poor AI is made up for with inhuman reflexes, accuracy, and bullet spam. Enemies are repetitive, and 90% of them have the same generic gun to plink at you with. And you can kill yourself by hurling a popcan at the floor. Yes, an ordinary soda can can kill you if you throw it at the floor. Try it if you actually spent money on this beast. Broken physics, horrible block puzzles, annoying train sequences, bog-standard FPS guns... if you can pick it up for a buck on Steam if they do another sale, go for it; The voice acting is good for a cringe if nothing else.

Davin F gave it a7:
If you play this game with the speech off, it's not that bad. The voice acting is the single most detractor from this game. The levels are all fairly decent, with a nice mix of industrial settings and a fair bit of detail. The AI is pretty bad, but that's more or less standard fare for this caliber of shooter. Overall, not a bad game, not a great game - but definitely worth a look!

Kyle B gave it a7:
This game is really underrated. It reminds me of System Shock 2 and Unreal 2. It is great for a small company to release. I bought it for $2.70 off steam and it is truly worth at least 10. The physics, graphics and hud are great. AI can be dumb sometimes. Voice acting is par, cut scenes should be shorter. The gameplay is standard but it is still fun to play.

Kea B gave it a7:
Alpha Prime it's a raw game, it doesn't have the care of those AAA blockbusters, but it isn't a bad game. The gameplay is good, at least if you understand that take cover and lean left or right are the way to save your ass from those crazy robots, prospector and company soldier. The story is nice, not the best on the sci-fi genre but nice, but the cinematic scene are a bit too long. The use of the wireless hacking tool is a good thing, but in the final part of the game it is rarely used, that was a shame

Sacred_flame101 gave it a10:
my god this was such a great game i enjoyed it a hell of a lot the story was quite good there was a nice array of weaponry and it is just a great game. people who rated it low probably just suck at fps games this is one of the best i have played. do yourself a favor and play this game

Zozo R. gave it a0:
Do not buy this piece of crap!!! It is a CRIME against gaming and should be avoided under all circumstances!!! It is the most frustrating and horripilating FPS that I ever played in my entire life.Even if you EVER have the possibility to downloading FREE stay away from this PIECE OF SH*T!!!
