Summary

Arena Wars is a completely new kind of 3D Real Time Strategy game, combining the gameplay principles and interface from RTS games with the fast pace of action-based shooters. Arena Wars is a single and multiplayer game. Multiplayer supports up to 8 players, who can fight against each other and challenge other players from all around the world via the AW Server, whilst the single player mode is loaded with action-packed single player missions against one or more computer opponents. There are 3 different game modes: Capture the Flag, Bombing Run, and Double Domination. In AW the goal is not simply to destroy the enemy's base or units. To score points in the various scenarios you must complete objectives that range from stealing the enemy flag, carrying a bomb into your enemy's base or seize and hold Domination zones for a period of time. The winner is the player who satisfies that particular game's objectives. For example, in a Capture the Flag game with a 'capture limit' of 5, the winner is the first player to capture 5 enemy flags. IC-Games

A fiendishly addictive offline and online multiplayer title and even a larger review wouldn't do the game justice (we only briefly mentioned the nifty damage score system and upgrade labs for example).

Area Wars brings a fresh and interesting concept forward into the RTS field, and implements it superbly. Lamentably bad AI, and a sketchy online community prevent it from being a must-have recommendation.

If you're looking for something a little more distinctive and hanker for lightning-paced strategy then Arena Wars is well worth your time.

Arena Wars is multiplayer RTS streamlined and polished to perfection. It looks good, it plays great and it has the potential to be a lot more than just a cult classic.

Striking the balance between playability and originality is one of the hardest things to achieve and I’m pleased to say Arena Wars performs with distinction.

Great simply because it successfully combines the frantic pace of the RTS genre with the wide variety of popular modes available in first-person shooters.

Computer Gaming World

Offers a great, replayable mix of strategy of action. [Holiday 2004, p.92]

I had tremendous fun with Arena Wars; its fast paced action and tactical warfare proving to be a godsend after endless struggles and yawns on various RPGs.

For every ten or so big releases which disappoint, there’s a relatively small-scale title that comes along and surprises everybody by being pretty good. Arena Wars fits nicely into this category.

Bargain multiplayer fun, but tedious if you go it alone. [Dec 2004, p.94]

I found the lack of resource-gathering, short learning curve and quick action enjoyable.

PC Gameworld

A hybrid that doesn't break new ground but still manages to entertain, despite the horrible voiceovers.

PC Gamer

I'm a sucker for giant robots. Especially when it's giant robots dishing out beautifully rendered displays of mass destruction. With Arena Wars, that's exactly what you get, wrapped in an extremely simple but nonetheless fun RTS package. [Holiday 2004, p.94]

GameSpot

For all its faults, though, Arena Wars manages to offer up clever gameplay that merges elements of shooters and real-time strategy games into a fresh, action-packed whole.

It may not be deep and customizable, but it's addictive and furious and more fun than it has any right to be.

It might be only knee deep compared to its brethren, but Arena Wars is a rare example of genre-mixing that works: it's an RTS with an FPS soul.

AceGamez

Arena Wars isn't a terrible game, it's just not a very inspired one. It's an uncomfortable and not very balanced strategy game that tries too hard to be something better than the games it's trying to emulate.
