Summary

The year is 2142, and the dawn of a new Ice age has thrown the world into a panic. The math is simple and brutal: The soil not covered by ice can only feed a fraction of the Earth's population. Some will live, most will die. In Battlefield 2142, players choose to fight for one of two military superpowers in an epic battle for survival, the European Union or the newly formed Pan Asian Coalition. Armed with a devastating arsenal of hi-tech assault rifles, cloaking devices and sentry guns, players also do battle using some of the most imposing vehicles known to man. Massive battle Mechs wage fierce combat on the ground, while futuristic aircraft rule the skies. When facing one of these new behemoths, players need to use their wits and an arsenal of new countermeasures like EMP grenades to level the playing field. [Electronic Arts]

Battlefield 2142 delivers a sci-fi themed experience using the familiar Battlefield style. While the setting may have changed a bit, the overall gameplay hasn't.

A great game. However, it isn’t as big of an improvement as "Battlefield 2" was over "Battlefield 1942." The new ranking system and unlocks will definitely keep fans of the series coming back for more.

It's certainly not gong to supersede the increasingy popular "Battlefield 2," as most of its merits merely held over from its predecessor, but nevertheless it's a brilliant evolution of one of the greatest online shooters ever made. And it's got giant walking tanks. [Dec 2006, p.62]

A solid multiplayer game just like its predecessors. The new Titan mode is a lot of fun but sometimes it suffers from severe lag issues. The large amount of unlocks is both a blessing and a curse. [Dec 2006, p.82]

Little more than "Battlefield 2" with mechs and gunships. In nearly every way, a round of 2142 plays out exactly like a round of its predecessor. Not that that’s a particularly bad thing, but for all intents and purposes this is a $50 mod.

Even if EA does use its nefarious in-game advertising system to find your precious information/porn/illegally downloaded music and movies and try to sell you similar items, Battlefield 2142 is undeniably a new and enjoyable step for a franchise that has so far not strayed away from historical or topical content.

This is definitely a case of evolution over revolution and, although the franchise makes a confident leap into the future, 2142's engine and gameplay are firmly rooted in the past. The action is still fast and frantic, the warfare is epic and exciting and the loading times remain as excruciating as ever.

I can’t help but feel this is a slight step backwards from Battlefield 2. Removing features players are used to just seems strange to me, and the levels don’t really provide an interesting backdrop. But the improved interface is a plus.

With only 10 maps, a lackluster new game mode, and the only interesting modification being the infantry system, it’s hard to justify the $50 dollar price tag. But if players enjoy futuristic large scale battles and they’re already a fan of the series, then 2142 is obviously their best option.

Battlefield, in its best moments, is one of the most perfect and pure online experiences around. It's too bad 2142 isn't a major evolution over the titles that came before it but it's entertaining enough, and as the old saying goes, you shouldn't look a gift hovertank in the mouth.

Thomas Farley gave it a10:
It was my second FPS game for the computer (my first was Halo), and I say. I played this game for hundreds of hours. It is simply amazing - The graphics, the optimization, the balance. The squad-play is also amazing, being able to help other people out through separate squads. Bottom Line: It's an amazing game, earns a 10/10 for me. You will simply love the thrill of hiding from a Battle-Walker hunting you down! Or throwing EMP grenades at oncoming cars and then shooting them in the rear! Or using the Recon's cloak device to sneak past enemy lines and come up for a quick kill! It's certainly one of the best games I've ever played in my life. People that rate this game badly clearly haven't put any time or effort into exploring the game.

huff d gave it a9:
Bf2142 is like an elusive club, or like marmite, love it or hate it kind of thing. now i'm not saying it's perfect, hence the 9, but christ on a bike, it's got lots of original features, titan mode, rank system that is genuinley rewarding, and who denies the grim satisfaction of 'podding' on an unspecting victim, genius. but there is a catch... punkbuster can be a mare, but with a bit of fiddling and researching is overcomeable, ea's support for this franchise is undying and has a massive following, regardless of others opinion, also the adrenalin you can be burning off when things start heating up is addictive. the locations are very well thought out too, if a little bland and unpopulated(where is everyone?) team up's is well put together also and in some m/player servers manditory, but that isnt a bad thing as it brings you all together, filling each other up with med and ammo is also a great feeling, commeradery an all, altogether a great game that can be bought for peanuts now. Recommended.

Luke L. gave it a9:
BF2142 lives up to the battlefield name. It still has that great battlefield style with a healthy dose of new content. The unlock system is great and keeps you coming back wanting more gear. It feels like a battlefield from the future, but is not too far out there with over the top and rediculous weapons. The punkbuster service can be... annoying to say the least but otherwise this game is a great buy!

Max gave it a7:
This game is a decent game, but it lacks a good FPS experience. Its too much like Battlefield 2,but worse. Theres less classes, its not as popular, and there are not a lot of maps. Only 2 new ones are out, and its 2009! Titan mode stops me from giving it a 5, and tells me to give it a 6, although barely. The titan settup is pretty good, but if you're tring to board the titan, you get killed easily.Overall, its not worth the $20 to buy it.

Martin H gave it a10:
"Excellent Game" - This game has hidden dephts and people and critics that give bad ratings and reviews needs to explore the vast amount of mods and content available by the community, that really makes this game beyond compare, period. Visit the battlefieldsingplayer forum and also checkout mods like the singleplayer mod , the extreme realism mod and finally the conflict mod and you'll know what I'm talking about.

Ryan K gave it a4:
Battlefield 2142 is not as fun as most other multiplayer shooters out there and can be very frustrating. Balance is also an issue. Recon class players can run through a group of people, dropping and detonating explosives, and come out of it unharmed if friendly fire is off (it usually is). Also, when sprinting players move very fast but cannot shoot: very useful for getting to cover. However, when not sprinting players move extremely slow: making them easy targets and greatly reducing the fun of one on one fights; since both combatants are practically immobile. Being used to playing Counter-Strike: Source, I found that this made the gameplay extremely boring. Ultimately, after playing this game for about three weeks I'm probably going to throw it away.

Joshua C. gave it a4:
I installed it into my first computer and put in an account name, when i took it out and put it into my laptop i entered the same account info. and it said that an account had already been registered for this cd key, then i tried to make a new account and it said the same thing.Unless someone can respond to this vote and help me out, I HATE THIS GAME!!!
