The year is 2142, and the dawn of a new Ice age has thrown the world into a panic. The math is simple and brutal: The soil not covered by ice can only feed a fraction of the Earth's population. Some will live, most will die. In Battlefield 2142, players choose to fight for one of two military superpowers in an epic battle for survival, the European Union or the newly formed Pan Asian Coalition. Armed with a devastating arsenal of hi-tech assault rifles, cloaking devices and sentry guns, players also do battle using some of the most imposing vehicles known to man. Massive battle Mechs wage fierce combat on the ground, while futuristic aircraft rule the skies. When facing one of these new behemoths, players need to use their wits and an arsenal of new countermeasures like EMP grenades to level the playing field. [Electronic Arts]

Battlefield 2142 delivers a sci-fi themed experience using the familiar Battlefield style. While the setting may have changed a bit, the overall gameplay hasn't.

A great game. However, it isn’t as big of an improvement as "Battlefield 2" was over "Battlefield 1942." The new ranking system and unlocks will definitely keep fans of the series coming back for more.

It's certainly not gong to supersede the increasingy popular "Battlefield 2," as most of its merits merely held over from its predecessor, but nevertheless it's a brilliant evolution of one of the greatest online shooters ever made. And it's got giant walking tanks. [Dec 2006, p.62]

A solid multiplayer game just like its predecessors. The new Titan mode is a lot of fun but sometimes it suffers from severe lag issues. The large amount of unlocks is both a blessing and a curse. [Dec 2006, p.82]

Little more than "Battlefield 2" with mechs and gunships. In nearly every way, a round of 2142 plays out exactly like a round of its predecessor. Not that that’s a particularly bad thing, but for all intents and purposes this is a $50 mod.

Even if EA does use its nefarious in-game advertising system to find your precious information/porn/illegally downloaded music and movies and try to sell you similar items, Battlefield 2142 is undeniably a new and enjoyable step for a franchise that has so far not strayed away from historical or topical content.

This is definitely a case of evolution over revolution and, although the franchise makes a confident leap into the future, 2142's engine and gameplay are firmly rooted in the past. The action is still fast and frantic, the warfare is epic and exciting and the loading times remain as excruciating as ever.

I can’t help but feel this is a slight step backwards from Battlefield 2. Removing features players are used to just seems strange to me, and the levels don’t really provide an interesting backdrop. But the improved interface is a plus.

With only 10 maps, a lackluster new game mode, and the only interesting modification being the infantry system, it’s hard to justify the $50 dollar price tag. But if players enjoy futuristic large scale battles and they’re already a fan of the series, then 2142 is obviously their best option.

Battlefield, in its best moments, is one of the most perfect and pure online experiences around. It's too bad 2142 isn't a major evolution over the titles that came before it but it's entertaining enough, and as the old saying goes, you shouldn't look a gift hovertank in the mouth.

I installed it into my first computer and put in an account name, when i took it out and put it into my laptop i entered the same account info. and it said that an account had already been registered for this cd key, then i tried to make a new account and it said the same thing.Unless someone can respond to this vote and help me out, I HATE THIS GAME!!!

Franjo R. gave it a10:
I've put in a few hours with this and BF2, and I must say that the lower-grading critics haven't put in the requisite hours to make a fair judgment. I say this because even though I loved BF2, 2142 has a much better communications system in place, really encouraging squad play. The same goes for the points system. Also, combining the points and awards systems is a lot better than not doing so (as in BF2). I also like the greater diversity when it comes to vehicles, and weapons. This makes me wonder how much time critics put into playing the games they review.

Sam T gave it a10:
Brilliant game, once you actually get it to work. Few problems with installation - you've have to install everything in a very specific way and order if you want to get the Nothern Strike and 1.50 patch working. But provides a great online experiance and awesome maps. Plenty of gameplay variation with 4 different classes and plenty of vehicles/aircraft to master. Really, really fun game, especially if you're playing with a squad. Tactical and fun - this will keep you playing for a LONG time.

Joe R. gave it an8:
The maps are okay, Camp Gibraltor is crazy because of the amazing close range parts. If i could change stuff in the game it would be that the maps would be a little prettier. i mean sure there is an iceage but it could look nicer still. Also i would've loved some really cool air vehicles, or hovering thihngs like between the hovertank and gunships. or even some good futuristic weapons. this game also has no single player but thats okay because multiplayer is awesome. another thing about the game is when u start u have basically no weapons. u have to go and unlock em all. its kinda nnoying but when u get far its a lot of fun.

Chris L. gave it a6:
Its ok the few new maps are ok but it has nothing new and well the unlocks are ok but some aer stupid i mean come on you need a unlock for a helmit that is a worthless peace of crap it is ok while it last but the airforce was a big let down for me.

Joshua R. gave it a10:
I love the game i think its a remarkable game and very well detailed I started to love the game after my cousin brought it and I started to enjoy it but I think that it is very complexed for most computers to handle with as you will need a computer modern enough to get the graphics right if anyone is considering to bye the game I say go for it.

J. E. gave it a7:
doesn't keep you interested, and it's multilayer only basically. The single player is so pointless it isn't even funny and a good computer really is needed to fully enjoy this game. I have a decent computer and i still get lag. I like the customization, it could have been better but thats how it goes... and it is a good game though and it kept me entertained for a while, but if you want to save a few bucks go with Americas Army because it's free and simple. The main thing that keeps you going in this game is the awards ranks and unlocks, but some of them are so ridiculous its probably not worth it...and what happened to the jets?
