Game Info

Publisher: SCi Games / Eidos Interactive

Developer: Mithis Games

Genre(s): Real-Time Strategy, Third-Person Action

Players: 16

ESRB Rating: T (Teen)

Release Date: January 30, 2007

Summary

Battlestations: Midway offers a totally new approach to air, sea and underwater combat, accurately reflecting the atmosphere and situation in the Pacific during 1942. Players take direct control of battleships, aircraft carriers, submarines and planes in a 'free-control' environment, with seamless switching between any of the units under your command: engage in dogfights with enemy fighters through flak-infested skies, utilise the silent attack of your submarine to unleash torpedoes on unsuspecting enemies, or command the awesome firepower of an entire carrier group. Featuring a number of game modes, including single-player campaigns for both Japanese and American sides, 'career' missions focusing on specific units, and broadband multiplayer modes for up to 16 people, Battlestations: Midway is a game on the grandest scale, bringing the air and sea battles of the Pacific to life like never before. Pelit (Finland)

A surprisingly good combination of action and strategy - influenced by the old Carrier Command. The single player mode would have been a lot better if the AI was not so heavily scripted, but the fun multiplayer mode more than makes up for it. [Mar 2007]

IGN

While the online options are thin, this game offers a great one-on-one option for RTS fans as well as a great co-op experience for those that have paid their dues on the training modes. For those tired of the same old thing, check out this unique new title from Eidos -- Battlestations Midway is anything but just another World War II game.

Battlestations: Midway is more than “just another WWII game;” it meets other wanna-be WWII simulators 'Midway,' and then takes another step forward.

PC Gamer

Forget the high-def TV and wireless Xbox 360 controller; Battlestations Midway plays better with a mouse and a joystick. [Apr 2007, p.58]

PC Format

The mix of real-time strategy and first-person war action works very well in places, but it's a touch lacking in drama. [Apr 2007, p.60]

Impressive because of the combination of these genres, making it recommendable to RTS fans (offering more than just a closer look to units in the form of total control) and simulation fans alike.

Game Chronicles

The only thing keeping this game from having a top score is its lack of single player content (at least by PC standards) and some buggy issues with multiplayer. But otherwise this is a really solid game that combines both first-person and strategic gameplay flawlessly.

Battlestations: Midway strikes just the right balance between action and strategy to create a game that's as unique as it is enjoyable.

Very fun game that is marred by technical problems. The lack of replay is what really hurts.

When heading online you’ll find some much needed variety that wasn’t present in the single player game.

Worth Playing

Although engaging, the single-player campaign is just too short and will provide very little replay value.

Hell in the Pacific for the trigger-happy. V-J Day for the wannabe Nimitz.

PC Gamer UK

Battlestations: Midway lacks this depth. There's masses of stuff to do, there's just not enough places to actually do it in, which is something of a shame.

Game Almighty

The many multiplayer possibilities should buy you a lot of time with the title, but the single-player campaign is just entirely too short (while the tutorial is mind-numbingly long).

Sydney Morning Herald

Battlestations: Midway has the potential to blossom as a multiplayer game, primarily online. With everyone free to jump between units, it can become chaotic, but that's half the fun.

1UP

Control issues aside, Battlestations: Midway is a fun game if you're into strategy titles. Just throwing mad amounts of units at each new problem really doesn't work here, since you have finite resources and no unit is really impervious to attack from any other unit.

Cheat Code Central

RTS fans might find it a little simple, but might find the emphasis on action a pleasing surprise. Action fans might find the strategy a little dull, but with the simplicity of the commands they'll find themselves in the thick of the action as often as they like.

It mostly fails to deliver standout action sequences, but fans of the real-time strategy genre should find their place in this game.

It's not terrible by any means, but it's just not very exciting either. [Apr 2007, p.76]

It’s a mix of exciting and overwhelming as you try to maintain what feels like 50 pots boiling over at different times. [Mar 2007, p.104]

Xabier M. gave it an8:
Somewhere between a strategy and a simulator game, it realy surprised me. The only thing I hope that sooner or later we start seeng new costume maps or so.

John H. gave it a7:
This is not a sim but if you like a great arcade this game will deliver. It's easy to learn and the action is intense. In battles you can jump between platforms at will or just let the AI work for you.

JB R. gave it a1:
Impossible to connect on multiplayer games.

Teriander F. gave it a9:
First, I have 15 years of PC gaming experience. FPS, TPS, RTS, Flight Sims, I played them all. This game does an excellent job of allowing the USER to decide how he/she wants to play. You can take control of ANY ship, aircraft, sub, etc. Or you can let the AI control them all. You can watch the entire battle from a map and give orders, or you can watch from 3rd person. If you don't like how the AI is controlling a ship or flying a plane - you can take control of it at anytime and do it yourself. The only thing I would change is allowing the user to have more "set up" time. Basically allowing the user have a greater distance from the enemy at the start of the battles (with a time compressor to allow speeding up or slowing down time). Another great thing about the game is the HIGH detail settings and Anti-Alias support for those with highend machines! It really makes a difference in detail when playing at extreme quality settings! Overall - Great sound effects, visuals, and if you enjoy flight or ship sims, this game is it.

Frankie E. gave it a10:
A very underestimated game. You can take full control of sea and air like no other game. Multiplayer is also a blast and a must do for all.

Frank S. gave it an8:
This game does a very good job of combining action and RTS elements, although there is not much for replay value and it may seem too simplified for veterans of either genre. The graphics are great, and I had no problems with the control scheme. As soon as you get used to all the controls and where everything is layed out, it becomes second nature and really fun to play.

Nunya F. gave it a7:
I was expecting something more of a technical sim. What I got was an engrossing experience. Even though the g.u.i. is simpified the strategy is top-notch.Graphics and Sound effects are superior. Dialog left a lot to be desired. Overall this game left me with the feeling of satisfaction.
