Chaos League is a new kind of game, combining Real-Time Strategy, RPG and Sports. In a fantasy heroic universe Chaos League offers new game-play possibilities. Don't look for notions of fair-play or the command "Help opponent back on his feet" because they don’t exist! However, if you've been longing to find in a sport's game such commands as "Stamp", "High Facial Kick", "Holding on the Ground", "Force Passage" or "Ball of Fire". Then at last you’ve found the game of your dreams. Take charge of a team; place 9 players in your half of the field, then go and put the ball in the opponent’s end-zone. Nothing easier! Except one small detail... there are a few opposition players determined to get the ball from you. On the pitch, as in the changing-rooms, there are no rules. Let yourself be carried away on the gentle airs of doping, corruption and hooliganism even before a match gets under way. Once on the pitch, if the ball doesn’t really interest you, then carry on destroying the opposition using all the underhand tricks at your disposal. If that doesn’t guarantee victory then magic and snares will come in useful. Even if massacring the opposition is encouraged, you’ll have to use far more subtle tactics to have a chance at winning. You’ll have to manage, as best you can, the individual talents of each of your players; take into account the mood of the spectators...to finally be able to get a few points on the scoreboard and make the opposition look foolish. It’s up to you whether you then comfort him or take advantage of him while he’s down to hit him with a few well chosen words. [Digital Jesters]

The play is original and refreshing in comparison to other generic sports titles, the controls are well designed and easy to use. The play style works in this RTS format: however, timed moves are provided for those more frantic times of play.

AceGamez
It's not quite a sports sim, neither is it your typical RTS or RPG game. It's a strange hybrid of all three that provides a generous amount of entertainment to those looking for something a bit different and a bit new.

All this action is complemented by superb graphics and effects that really put across the bone-crunching pain of the competitors.

Definitely gets points for its sense of humor. [Jan 2005, p.78]

Many games in the past captured the essence of brutal fantasy gridiron nicely, but none could have dreamed up this much depth and detail.

Presentation aside, the only real gripe I have is the lack of any transfer options in the Championship mode, which makes a losing streak almost impossible to break.

One of the best features of this game has to be the audio. During early training missions you're introduced to the game's two commentators who come out with some cracking one-liners which really helps the game feel fun and rather tongue in cheek.

Total Video Games
The game introduces some really original ideas, but the lack of team AI, and broken gameplay let it down.

It may sound like a bad idea, but the surprising truth is that this mixture of genres works very well indeed, and there are plenty of inventive and unique features in Chaos League to silence those who bemoan the lack of innovation in modern gaming. [Sept 2004, p.120]

The package is, as a whole, rather rough around the edges. You know you’re in for trouble when even the publisher admits that the tutorial is “a pain and a little time consuming”.

PC Format
There's fun to be had, but it's harder work than it should be - a case of feature overload. [Aug 2004, p.82]

Gamers Europe
Certainly playable, but the majority of gamers will be turned off by the complexity that sucks the fun out of a game that otherwise promised a riotous experience.

Boomtown
Chaos League doesn't quite hit the mark because it fails to replicate what people most enjoy about sport - its unpredictable nature and the triumph of skill and control. By curbing its own ambitions, it's scored an own goal.

Edge Magazine
An overall shoddy feeling to the production spoils a great deal more. Where there should be panache, there are rough edges. As a comedy, it achieves much. It is funny. But as a sports game a great deal more polish is required. [Sept 2004, p.106]
