Summary

The greatest part of the axis campaign in Phase Two takes place in Africa. And the missions are with the Allies residing in Italy. Whoever finishes both campaigns gets to enjoy a bonus campaign in Yugoslavia. The story is more important to us in comparison to its predecessor. That's why we commissioned a world-famous author. We've built over 20 new units. The Italians now have the M13/40, the Carro Armato and the Semovente ATGs. The Allies, on the other hand, will have the M3 Grant/Lee, the Daimler Dingo and the Bofors 40mm Halftrack. An important feature is the various types of new buildings. It's possible in Phase Two to destroy parts of certain structures. For example, you can destroy only the watch towers of a palace. [CDV - Producer Interview Exerpts]

If you enjoy your stories ripping and your RTSs simple but smart, Codename: Panzers Phase Two is probably for you.

I have logged more hours with this than many of the RTS games I have reviewed because it was both enjoyable and reasonably challenging. I can hardly wait for Phase III.

Game Over Online

The story is engaging, the graphics are attractive, and the gameplay is challenging, but rewarding. I'm practically burnt out on WWII games, but this one managed wet my whistle.

Some will no doubt be disappointed with the lack of progression but everything that Codename Panzers did so well in the first phase has been brought forward so elegantly with Phase Two. If you want to see the best the WW2 RTS genre has to offer, then you really have no need to look any further.

IGN

In the end, the change of scenery is enough for me to want to play this game. If Phase Three does nothing but add even more missions in an entirely new theater, I'll still be first in line to buy it.

Jolt Online Gaming UK

By bringing forward all the great aspects of its predecessor that worked so well before, giving them a change of scenery to warmer climes and adding in a few new choice features, Codename Panzers: Phase Two has managed to maintain the quality of the first instalment.

Pelit (Finland)

A run-of-the-mill real-time strategy that is saved by its story driven campaign mode. Next time, some actual strategy, too, please. [Sept. 05]

Gaming Nexus

With well-designed missions, strong graphics and a good balance of “realistic” and “fun”, Phase 2 is a decent way to spend some gaming hours. It’s not as standout as it needs to be to drag itself from the pile of “me too!” WWII titles, but Phase 2 is certainly near the top of a very long list.

GameSpot

It's clear that Stormregion didn't need to fix much in Phase One, and so Phase Two plays it safe by offering more of the same. But in the case of Codename: Panzers, "more of the same" still translates into some fun and beautiful destruction.

It’s a wonderful game with a clichéd, though entertaining plot and some hefty system requirements. If you can meet the latter and don’t give a damn about the former then you will find plenty here to enjoy. Especially the tanks.

Armchair generals will find little innovation in this hasty sequel to last year's sadly overlooked World War II strategy game, but Phase Two is another absorbing challenge.

Boomtown

Apart from the game giving our PC a bit of a rough time the story is the only other area where we have to mark it down. The story is there to guide you through the intense carnage however, and it doesn’t plead to be taken seriously. Which is a good thing because it clearly isn’t.

Pelaaja (Finland)

On of the best games in its genre. This is a versatile and well rounded package, which manages to avoid many of the pitfalls that other RTS games don’t. There’s still room for improvement though. Battles are at times a bit too scripted and formulaic and the enemy AI is quite one dimensional. [August 2005, p.73]

And while it may lack the visual splendour of, say, "Brothers in Arms," it does fire up the imagination to deliver an authentic, atmospheric war experience that exhausts as much as it excites.

Although there has been an increase in the number of unit types available to gamers, Panzers: Phase Two is very much the second part of a three part game rather than a sequel, and fans of the first title will be more than happy to carry on with the story.

With the added Skirmish, Multiplayer and massive single player campaigns, it's one that'll keep you occupied for a while to come, or a least until Phase Three is unleashed, which will hopefully be more of an evolution than an update.

This game is a bit like an infomercial. Initially you’ll flick over instinctively, but given a chance, it will grab you and before you know it, you’ll be the proud owner of a manual food processor and a lateral thigh trainer. I’m glad I gave it enough time to settle in.

The gameplay itself is strategy heavy - tank rushes are still always the best bet, but usually, you don't have that many tanks to do it with, so some thought is required. The game is also fairly damn hard because of this.

Truth be told, Phase Two boasts as much number-crunching minutiae as the most anal RTS romp; the difference here is that it exists beneath the surface...Implicit military knowledge and second-nature RTS instincts are not requisites here. [Sept 2005, p.112]
