Summary

Cogs is a puzzle game where players build machines from sliding tiles. Players can choose from 50 levels and 3 gameplay modes. New puzzles are unlocked by building contraptions quickly and efficiently. Inventor Mode: Starting with simple puzzles, players are introduced to the widgets that are used to build machines - gears, pipes, balloons, chimes, hammers, wheels, props, and more. Time Challenge Mode: If you finish a puzzle in Inventor Mode, it will be unlocked here. This time, it will take fewer moves to reach a solution, but you only have 30 seconds to find it. Move Challenge Mode: Take your time and plan ahead. Every click counts when you only get ten moves to find a solution. [Steam]

Cogs can best be described as kind of cyber punk style meets Leonardo Da vinci. Looks simple enough at first, but you soon find there is some real brain benders involved.

It’s a gorgeous curio, well worth the asking price.

The game has three game modes and 50 levels, so even when you’ve beaten the ever-increasing-in-difficulty Inventor Mode (basic puzzles and mechanics) you can take them all on again in Time Challenge Mode (30 second time limit) and Move Challenge Mode (ten moves only).

Cogs is a great game to play if you fancy giving your brain a good flex while still keeping your wits during some of the later levels.

A unique but challenging puzzle game that is best left to the patient.

IGN

The extreme difficulty, coupled with the lack of a hint system, makes Cogs more of a diversion that you'll probably move on from quickly than something that you'll sink a lot of time into.

DarkZero

The budget price and quaint visual style makes Cogs as addictive and satisfying as the old-school toys it references. It’ll certainly last longer than a ball-in-a-cup.

Overall I had a fun time with Cogs, it's a fresh spin on puzzle games, and while some puzzles are scream-inducing hard, in the end you feel a huge sense of victory when you solve a super hard puzzle, and who out there doesn't like to see a rocket ship take flight, after you've connect a system of pipes to its 6 engines!

I highly recommend trying out the demo to see if you can live with this flaw before making a decision; Cogs still deserves our respect for creating an unusual and very well thought out puzzle game, but sadly the restrictions of its chosen medium gets the better of the gameplay at times.

If you like slide puzzles, it's disastrously addictive. [July 2009, p.73]

Boomtown

Bearing in mind that Cogs is a budget game from the Steam network I would still have to say that I could only recommend it to the minority who actually like sliding tile puzzles if they ever come down from their hilltop monasteries, and maybe at a push, trainspotters.

Derek P gave it a10:
A brilliantly inventive game with stunning visual aspects. It combines the beauty of the standard sliding puzzle with the complexity of the steampunk inspired mechanics. Not only that, but after you've completed the game you have the option to better your scores through using less moves and less time. Lazy8 studios must also be commended on their friendliness and support to modders of the game as seen in their forum. Top marks guys.

It's a very sweet puzzle game. No more, no less. Each puzzle pretty unique, and at some point you WILL be twisting your brain around in finding a solution. The graphics aren't exactly perfect, but it still has a lot of charm in it. I consider it as a game to play when I get a bit fed up with all my action games, or when I just want to play for 30 min or less. Of course, if you hate sliding tiles around (or basically puzzles) you will steer clear from it. Otherwise, for only 8 Euros, it's definitely worth considering buying.

Ed gave it a9:
It's mind bending not mind numbing. If you are in the mood for a few mins it's a fantastic diversion to what ails you!

Scott W gave it a10:
I love puzzle games and this one feeds my hunger for them. Gears, steam, balloons and bells some of the best things in a puzzle. Thank you for this game!

Tender Vittles gave it an8:
GAMEPLAY: It seems that the main problem professional critics have with this game is that they find sliding puzzles too difficult. That sort of criticism can be discarded, and should be--how much weight should a person's opinion have if they cannot manage the genre to begin with? You either have a mind for puzzles like these, or you don't. For those of you who do, you will find this game to be well worth the reasonable price. The puzzles are numerous and difficult enough that you won't solve them all in just a couple of sittings. The atmosphere of the game is interesting, and the nature of the challenges keep them from being too much like your run-of-the-mill flat sliding puzzles. Also, unlike conventional picture-puzzles, the solution is rarely absolute: if you need to build a long straight pipeline, for instance, you may line up straight pipe pieces in any order to complete it. This flexibility helps to balance out the complexity of even the more difficult puzzles. With regards to gameplay, the only disappointment I have is that you do not have the option to randomly shuffle the puzzle pieces for each challenge after you solve the initial set-up configuration. That would have added to the replayability of the game. GRAPHICS AND SOUND: When it comes to graphics, I agree with the critics. The game looks good, it has a nice atmosphere, but the low resolution means you'll be running it in a window on newer systems. The textures, also, could be much richer. And, there is no widescreen option. The sound--ticking, chiming, and clattering--adds to the mechanical atmosphere of the game. The music is sometimes distracting, but can always be disabled.
