Summary
In the most fearsome war ever fought, emerged the most fearless soldiers – the Commandos. Have you got what it takes to join the original elite Special Force in the World War II shooter Commandos Strike Force? In a new direction for the multi-million selling series, Commandos Strike Force takes you right into the heart of the action from a first person perspective. Take control of the three members of the Strike Force unit, each with their own play style. Switch between the Green Beret, always at the heart of the action with his expertise in combat and the use of heavy weaponry; the Sniper with his nerves of steel and expert marksmanship; and the Spy, stealthily striking at the heart of the enemy. However, it is your choice how you execute plans of attack by using the Commandos' unique skills. Set in war torn Europe amid the backdrop of World War II, you must take your highly trained group on a series of daring missions, deep behind enemy lines in France, Norway and Russia. Taking control of a Nazi-occupied town, freeing French Resistance prisoners and kidnapping a general are a few of the large range of missions. As well as a compelling single player campaign, the game features a variety of online multiplayer modes. [Eidos Interactive]

PC Format
A silent and deadly change from the usual WW2 percussion. Refreshing. [Mar 2006, p.98]
Pelit (Finland)
Commandos Strike Force sounds at first like sacrilege, but surprisingly, it remembers its roots. The mix of stealth and action works well and the pacing is good. The game is a fun, basic stealth shooter, nothing more, nothing less. [May 2006]
ActionTrip
Overall, however, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the spirit of the old games somehow managed to live on in the FPS iteration.

I'd say that fans of the series ought to check this one out, but those of us who've gotten spoiled by Brothers in Arms and Call of Duty will only see glimpses of that intensity and cinema.

There have been several crucial moments that made me laugh out loud, and others that made me feel a sense of cerebral accomplishment - feelings that are all-too rare when playing an FPS.

There's no use mincing words. Commandos Strike Force is a dumbed down version of the Commandos series. It's more accessible, more forgiving and for the right player it can be a whole lot of fun.

Dull and boring, not too many will play it longer than one sit through. For the fan of the series, you may want to rent since there is no nostalgic moments to reminisce about.

Commandos is mildly entertaining, adds a few twists to the gameplay that are a bit refreshing, but ultimately falls short.

Too much is lost in the translation between third-person strategy and first-person shooter, with insufficient respect paid overall to the FPS point of view. [Jun 2006, p.52]
Worth Playing
It's certainly more of the same when it comes to the stealth action and FPS genres that it follows, and doesn't really rise above or try anything particularly new in order to provide that little bit of an edge that it needs to make it out of the realm of mediocrity.

Commandos: Strike Force does have some unusual ideas that it brings to the war first person shooter, such as peeking through keyholes and sneaking around strangling Nazis while dressed as one of them, but it's simply not enough to earn it a promotion through the ranks, not with so many great shooters out there.
Though based on a great series of innovative tactical action/puzzle games, Commandos Strike Force comes off as just another middling World War II shooter, despite some good ideas.

If I had more space I could detail the game's numerous flaws in control, design, and AI, but I don't. Thank God. [Jun 2006, p.112]
VideoGamer
It looks okay, it plays okay, it has some nice touches, but it lacks the spit and polish required to elevate it above the rest in an already crowded genre.

An uninspired shift to first-person saps this Commandos instalment of that special strategic touch.

Even if some parts are lackluster there's not much that's truly awful about it, and its unique elements are more than enough to make up for things like the handful of missions spoiled by suicidal Allies.

There was one mission that brought out the intensity that I expected, but it was over too soon and right back to the problems that preceded it.

Commandos: Strike force tries to shoehorn these series hallmarks into a first-person shooter but fails on nearly every level. [July 2006, p.57]
Yahoo! Games
Only the Sabotage online mode, where teams attempt to interrogate rivals for parts of a six-number code, stands out as unique. One mode won't win the war, much less our gaming money for the month.

The game is so immensely frustrating and linear that moments of fun are few and far between. [Apr 2006, p.124]

Ernst R. gave it a9:
A quirky, mixed bag. Sometimes excellent and thoroughly absorbing, sometimes implausible. However, the game has a charm all its own. The biggest failure is the rubbishy enemy AI. I loved the stylish graphics...felt authentically 1940's. Not the very best of the genre...but not the worse, either.
Bonzo3671 gave it a6:
Very disappointing - having followed the rest of the Commandos series. This is the "new" Pyros lame duck, it's their Star Wars: Episode I, if you like. Some nice touches but with so many better immersive WWII FPS out there to compete with why did they dump a very successful formula for this 2nd rate effort?
Geodotto D. gave it a5:
Just so people know. The two people responsible for the best of the series of Commandos, are no longer in Pyro, maybe that's the reason why the old spirit doesn't live anymore in this new game. The went to set up another company, Arvirago Technologies and they'll be soon releasing a new game "Lord of the creatures".
Phoenix gave it a4:
Pyro sure have totally ruined down the Commandos series. Where's the old spirit?
Raq R. gave it a7:
I like to play this games
Wayne B. gave it a9:
not a dynamic or as graphicly challenging as some of the lastest ww2 fps yet has a charm of its own. Methodical, enjoyable and not too taxing - a nice change and a welcome edition to the current crop of WW2 games.
