Release Date: September 26, 2005
Summary
Day of Defeat: Source features multiplayer, team-based gameplay set in the WWII European theatre of operations. Players choose a role and tackle goal-oriented missions based on historical operations. Day of Defeat: Source takes the classic gameplay of the original Day of Defeat and improves the experience with Source, the advanced engine technology Valve created for "Half-Life 2." With this technology, DoD: Source offers state of the art graphics (including support for HDR lighting) in optimized versions of popular maps, plus redesigned sound and all new player, weapon, and world models. New features include: Completely updated maps to take full advantage of the Source engine replaces, integrated physics simulation for ragdolls and physically simulated objects, higher resolution textures throughout, bump mapping, specular lighting, and other graphic effects, all powered by advanced Source engine technology, completely redesigned user interface, all new voice, weapon, and ambient sounds. Hearing bullets wiz past your head as you hear the crackle of machine gun fire in the background is something that I have yet to experience in any game.

Day of Defeat is not only a great looking game, but an enjoyable WWII multiplayer experience that gives you more than your money’s worth.

Just as enjoyable and as addictive as it has been in previous versions, and hopefully in time, new updates and maps should bring in a new generation of Day of Defeat fanatics.

I think the new DoD has done the best job of utilizing the Source physics engine.

Looks very professional. It is hard to believe that it is just a mod. The action might be too fast for the weak hearted so keep your pills close by. [Nov 2005]
Games Radar UK (Pre-2006)
This is a brave, slow-paced WWII shooter with tons of character and verve. Valve will update it with more content, and when they do DoD will be worth another 5%. Until then... [PC Gamer UK]

While the game still needs some patching, and is unfortunately not DoD as we know it, this is still an absolutely fantastic package; those after a new multiplayer shooter can’t really go wrong with this one. Oh, and expect this score to go up over time as Valve patches out various problems.

I expect to be playing DoD a lot more than "Couterstrike: Source"... I recommend DoD:S to the multiplayer action crowd, but don't come crying to me when things start getting stale.

While a lack of maps cuts into the game's value somewhat, Day of Defeat: Source still offers a satisfying and exciting experience for those who just can't get enough of World War II.

It's firmly a team game, rocketing from tense action to a tedious slog, based entirely on how the rest of your team plays. [Dec 2005 p.91]
Eurogamer
In terms of scale, it barely comes up to Battlefield's ankles, and in terms of tactics and tension it can't beat Counter-Strike, but once you've spent a few hours on a server of 20 or so people, you'd have to want not to enjoy it to fail to - and your own war stories are an inevitable byproduct.

A great game if you are a fan of the WW2 genre and a previous fan of the DOD series, but if not, you might find greater value in another WW2 title.

Sound is what makes this game unique however. You’re made very aware of gunshots almost everywhere to varying degrees of loudness.

Valve's insistence on quality over quantity has paid off – this is a small but perfectly polished package.

When all's said and done, this is an old game - an excellent old game and a beautiful old game - but an old game nonetheless. But if you haven't played it before, now's a great time to do so. [PC Zone]

Great fun, but tough to recommend until more maps are available. [Holiday 2005, p.72]
Game Over Online
I just figured that with all the time it took to release DoD:S that they might be adding vehicles (a la "Call of Duty - United Offensive") or weapons. It turned out that I was wrong. Doesn’t make it a bad game, and the $20 bargain price (which is almost certain to include more maps from Valve at a later date) doesn’t hurt, but if given the choice (and Steam doesn’t) to just keep playing the old DoD, that's probably where I would have stayed.

Yes, yes, no doubt Valve will release more maps soon and the community is already churning new content out, but are we expected to pay for an updated mod that was free which offers less content than the original but that’s supposed to be ok because the community will fix it? Huh? That’s logic I can't wrap my head around.

Love it or hate it, DOD's war is an apparently contradictory compulsion.

At $20 a la carte or bundled for cheap with other Valve products, anyone who enjoys this kind of game should easily get his money's worth.

Taken with the limitations of only four maps, on which to play one game type, all too soon you can find yourself in a mechanical rut playing them over and over. And that's something that the original didn't suffer from.

simon gave it a0:
Random and sudden spawning enemies, weak weapons, poor collision, failed game mechanics (no value to actually jumping in) and misguided intent. this is a poor ww2 game even compared to cheap mill shooters i have actually played through. aside from good graphics and nice sounds, this is a waste of time and money. not all that glitters is gold, and this cheap game proves that.
Kyle R. gave it a9:
While most people are sick of, and/or gettting sick of World War II games, I cannot get enough of them. If I were to have to choose between Counter-Strike: Source and this, I would pick this. If I were to pick between the singleplayer portions of Call of Duty 4 or Call of Duty: World at War, I would pick World at War. Same goes for Call of Duty's 2 and 3 (4 wins for multiplayer). The reason this doesnt get a 10 is because there is no singleplayer (it is a multiplayer game, so it's not that big of a deal) and because there isn't enough variety of weapons and armies compared to the original Day of Defeat Either way, I prefer this one to the original.
[Anonymous] gave it a7:
I really enjoyed the original, but this game feels like it falls short. Yes, it looks better and has a physics engine, but there is actually less variety in classes (wow, atleast keep it the same) and the whole game feels kind of bloated and jumpy. Movement is unrealistic and the ironsights feature on the rifles is just not what DOD was about. If you want ironsights, play COD (which I also do).
Rob F. gave it a9:
The game is very addicting. I think it was heavily influenced by the movie "Saving Private Ryan" in the way it sounds and feels. The physics of the game, the distant gunshot sounds, the shellshock that you get after a grenade goes off near you, the historical accuracy of the weapons (you can't get a headshot with a handgun standing 100 ft away like you can in other WWII shooters), and the sun blindness that you get after stepping out of a dark room are all really cool innovations. The only problem is that the maps tend to get kind of old after awhile due to lack of variety...otherwise a really enjoyable game that I would recommend to anybody interested in WWII.
Average Joe gave it a5:
Well I loved the original, more that any other game I played. While this version looks better, I`m afraid it doesn`t do it for me. It`s all run and gun, no strategy like the original. Plays more like unreal tornament than a WW II game in my opinion.
A S gave it a10:
Anga R you obviously didn't take the time to play this game. It's one of the best multiplayer games available and at it's price of only $10 is unbeatable value. When players are hit they look funny? This game uses the same engine as CS:Source so if you're complaining about them looking like string puppets you can say the same thing for CS:Source. This game is more dynamic than CS. It has classes, quality voice commands, amazing sound effects, prone and other stuff. Unlike CS, this game actually involves team work to progress and the weapons recoil is much more realistic which you have to learn to control. If anything CS is less dynamic out of the two. Don't get me wrong, CS:Source is equally an awesome game (both are addictive and good value for money) but CS is definitely the 'simpler' one out of the two as both T & CT are practically identical with the exception of a few weapons and both use the same voice commands. That's not much variety. Either way if you don't like this game then maybe you just don't like the WW2 theme. You shouldn't really compare the two because they're different games so overall while I said all that stuff above, they're both great games and since this review is for DoD I'll say that it's one the best games to buy. Oh and Anga how can you possibly refund the game since the game is bought on Steam. You can't...so maybe you're pretending you played it.
Anga R. gave it a2:
Had the game for the last 3 days, take a arm and a leg to download, and realize that game is over rated. If you think this Day of Defeat is as good as CS, let me tell you it effectively isn't. Far from it. It is awkward to play, the pace is out of control and there's no dynamic. Nevermind the sound. When players are hit they look like a string puppet, that stand when pulled, it's a bit odd. I am disappointed, very disappointed. Will be happy to uninstall the game and get a refund.
