Smersh is the Russian for "Death to Spies" and was the name of a set of counterintelligence departments in the Soviet Army formed during World War II. Their mission was to secure the rear of the active Red Army by arresting traitors, deserters, spies and criminal elements. During the war these agents became the main force combating the German intelligence service. The game's main character is a captain in the 4th department of the Soviet counterintelligence service. He is a professional spy trained to execute dangerous operations on his own. During missions he has to complete various tasks in the heart of enemy territory including stealing important documents, eliminating different enemy officers or high-ranking officials, kidnapping and sabotage. Game missions are based on real historical events and operations which were executed by the military intelligence and counterintelligence during the war. [1C Company]

Pelit (Finland)
A nice change of pace from the normal fast-paced action games of late. Observing the environment and enemies before making the right choices is good fun, even if the clumsy interface and slow-moving character try to mess the experience up. Not everyone's cup of tea, but fans of Hitman should be right at home here. [Nov 2007]

IGN
Even with its quirks, Death to Spies is an entertaining, varied, and highly addictive pastime for those who enjoy exercising their brain as much as their trigger finger. It's intelligently delivered, credibly presented, and anything but easy.

Game Over Online
The missions are challenging, you get lots of options for how to play through them, and the 10-mission campaign takes about 20-30 hours to complete, which, all-in-all makes Death to Spies a pretty worthwhile purchase at its $30 suggested retail price.

Game Chronicles
While it's not a revolutionary game, Death To Spies delivers a compelling stealth experience and is well worth a try for genre fans.

Challenging and enjoyable.

In all, Death to Spies would be a pretty good title if it just had a little more to it beyond the standard sneak, eliminate and impersonate formula that’s repeated too often.

Death to Spie's dry technical approach isn't for everybody, but its 10 challenging missions will still put sweat on your brow and a pounding pulse in your ears for under $30. [Jan 2008, p.90]

Gaming Nexus
All in all, Death to Spies is well done, but it will require the right type of player to truly enjoy it. It has a few quirks (particularly in the user interface) that can drive you nuts, but as I said at the beginning: you were warned. Death comes very easily to spies!

It may not be easy doing sneaky dirty work in the Second World War, but it is more entertaining than you'd expect.

Games Radar (in-house)
Offers a rather refreshing take on war-status games. It's nowhere near the excellence of other established stealth games, but it does offer enough innovation and open-endedness to get enough entertainment out of.

Relies on trial and error over good intelligence. [June 2008, p.108]

Worth Playing
Alas, it fails at everything it sets out to do, and it can't even manage to adequately imitate genre progenitors from nearly a decade before it, let alone do anything to surpass them.

Play (Poland)
The Soviet spy uses Hitman techniques and changes as often as him, but his moves aren’t half as cool. Sneaking past legions of suspicious Gestapo thugs soon becomes tedious and boring, and while the armory is full of things that go boom, using them is pure suicide precisely because said boom brings the whole damned Wehrmacht on your head. [Dec 2007]

Armchair Empire
The idea of WWII espionage and sabotage efforts on the Eastern Front is ripe with possibilities for a game, but Death to Spies bungled the execution on this one.

Jared J gave it a6:
Horrifying graphics, night-mareish controls, and incredibly stupid game-play. Yet, the story-line seems to hold on to you making you want to play the next level. The armory has lots of weapons to choose from, and you get a knife. I like the idea, and concept but the game itself is broken. A six would just be for the story-line and armory, nothing else. The A.I. is horrified! You can be seen with a disguise from the other side of the map! The detail of maps, and characters is laughable. This feels more like a beta stage demo than a full game. It at least deserves a weekend rent or the playable demo, but for you who are looking for a game to play just when you are incredibly bored, then this is for you.

Ken B. gave it a7:
A poor imitation of the Hitman games. Can be challenging and takes a lot of patience as you spend a lot of time trying to get around people who can blow your cover from quite a distance. The game never did grab me, and still is unfinished.
