Summary
From the medieval battles of Jeanne D'Arc to the fantastic empires of the Incas to the flaming wars of Napoleon, EU II invites you to take the seat as the ruler of a superpower for 400 epic years. The challenge begins in 1419 - the 100 years war between France and England - and ends with the rise and eventual fall of one of Europe's greatest strategists, Napoleon. Take on the role of the Colonizing Might of Spain, the feudal warlords of Samurai Japan as well as the small trading nation of Genoa. [Strategy First]

Yahoo! Games
My current favorite for top strategy game of the year. It's more playable than the original and there is a wealth of new options that increases replayability by a factor of ten.

If you're at all interested in history or empire-building games, you owe it to yourself to play this game.

It manages to maintain a consistent level of sophistication and high complexity without sacrificing what really makes strategy games fun.

Fun and engrossing, an experience to remember. [Apr 2002, p.100]
GameSpy
For those willing to take on the still-steep learning curve, however, and for whom diplomacy is more than just trading Ironworking for The Wheel, EU II is possibly the best historical strategy game there is.

True, the learning curve is Himalayan, but once I got sucked in, my love of strat games was instantly rekindled. [Feb 2002, p.73]
GameSpot
Although the new game doesn't represent the jump in production values that some might have hoped for, the gameplay changes should give fans of the first game plenty to work with.

An intriguing challenge, and one of the better civilization games to emerge this year.
It would be a shame to pass up Europa Univeralis II over something flashier because the likelihood is that others just cant compete with the combined epicness and fun of the game.
Read Full Review >Computer Games Magazine
One of the results of all the additional options is that Europa Universalis isn't as straight jacketed by history as it used to be.
Since there's so much interesting information in the game, some drudgery and a lot of time spent reading statistically-based screens and news about what's happening in other parts of the world, your basic playability is bound to suffer.

AView AM gave it a10:
This might be the best strategy game ever. Hopelessly addictive and highly detailed. My only regret is the lack of focus in Asia but methinks there's an expansion pack for that, if I recall correctly.
Arne B. gave it a10:
Buy it, patch it and play it. It is a truly great game, well worth the money.
Gezz I. gave it a 9:
After two and a half year after release EU II is still getting better with the recent 1.08 patch. Paradox is doing great by trying to reach perfection.
Bryan V. gave it a 10:
Just one of my all time favourites!
Boche L. gave it a 10:
Probably the best strategic game ever made. Amazing, awesome and i can“t stop playing it over nights...
[Anonymous] gave it a 10:
Best game i have played, easily beats Civilization series.
Gunhan K. gave it a 10:
Very detailed. I have had the first game and enjoyed it for quite a bit. When this one came out, I was sceptical if it could live up to its predecessor. It did alright :)
