PC Gamer

Proof that the "kill...reward" paradigm still works. [June 2001, p.78]

GamePro

For a refreshing RPG that will satisfy all but the most blowhard dungeon hacks, take a trip to Evil Islands.

GamePower

A game that is at once familiar, yet unique, this RPG from the folks who brought you the Rage Of Mages strategy RPGs is a strong, yet slightly flawed plate of gaming goodness.

IGN

Normally, I don't really have the patience or time to play really long RPGs, but after playing Evil Islands for just a few minutes, I was hooked.

Gamezilla!

Could have been fantastic except for its game-slowing bugs and voiceover issues. Even with them, it's still addictive and I've found myself playing it until early morning.

ActionTrip

After playing Evil Islands and getting a bitch of a migraine because I stayed up in front of the PC for 48 long hours, I can safely conclude that Nival Interactive has developed one seriously addictive PC game. It can even be hazardous to your health, and it might have serious effects on your social life.

Once the initial learning curve was surpassed, things became much easier, making it fun to just sit back and enjoy Evil Islands' gameplay.

Hot Games

What makes the game somewhat unique, though, is its peculiar blend of strategy, stealth and tactics with medieval RPG elements and real-time combat, along with its grey-shaded plot.

Electric Playground

While not quite as big as "Baldur's Gate II," this game is considerably large, totalling about 100 hours of the single-player gameplay.

Eurogamer

A huge, varied and utterly addictive game. Acting and dialogue is a bit hit and miss at times, and the voice acknowledgements when you give your characters orders soon get rather repetitive, but overall the storyline is strong enough to keep you involved in the game.

Game Over Online

Sometimes fun and satisfying, but more often than not it is slow, boring and repetitive.

Adrenaline Vault

Evil Islands does not present a very novel gameplay experience...But the excellent polish of the overall product, with particularly strong graphics, music, and artificial intelligence, makes it more than worth a look.

GameSpot

It can be very addicting. Hours will fly past as you progress from one exploit to another, hooked on the hack-and-slash formula that was made popular by Blizzard's hit "Diablo."

Yahoo! Games

For a game without a particularly compelling plot, pretty addictive and fun to play.

Daily Radar

The biggest problem with the game, aside from the voice acting, is the difficulty. Both the characters and the monsters are capable of getting critical hits, but the monsters seem to have an advantage over Zak and his companions.

50

Games Radar UK (Pre-2006)

Will you want to spend over 100 hours, crawling here, there and everywhere to get into in it? That's the question. A lot of you aren't, for Evil Islands doesn't stand out either as a great genuine strategy or as a bonkers RPG.

Computer Games Magazine

In the end, the thing you remember most isn't the graphics engine, the nifty spell and item construction, or even the awful voice acting; it's the frustration of slogging through a poorly balanced game that substitutes saving and reloading for gameplay.
