Summary
Caught between two rival factions in war-torn Africa, you are sent to take out "The Jackal," a mysterious character who has rekindled the conflict between the warlords, jeopardizing thousands of lives. In order to fulfil your mission you will have to play the factions against each other, identify and exploit your their weaknesses, and neutralize their superior numbers and firepower with surprise, subversion, cunning and, of course, brute force. Real-time story telling, systemic auto-healing, minimal in-game interface are just few of the features that make you feel the tension of being alone against barbarous warlords that threaten thousands of innocent lives. Choose from a wide range of weapons to make your way to your primary target. Meet the fight head-on with your machine-gun, go berserk with your machete or make stealth kills as a Sniper. If you feel that the atmosphere is not warm enough, light up your flamethrower and let your enemies and everything around them feel the heat. [Ubisoft]

The unique setting, brilliant AI and palpable atmosphere, make Far Cry 2 a quintessential PC gaming experience. [Dec 2008, p.63]
Cynamite
Far Cry 2 has its annoying quirks, no doubt. But they can be solved via patch – the quality of fights, atmosphere, graphics and gameplay still reaches a very high level.

I'm unable to go back to straight and simple first-person shooters. Far Cry 2 hasn’t just exceeded my expectations, it’s blown them away. [Holiday 2008, p.58]

By adopting a laissez faire attitude to player discretion, Ubisoft has crafted a brilliant follow-up.

Far Cry 2 is not a game for everybody, neither is it perfect. It requires time, patience and dedication; some will be frustrated with the long car trips - avoidable - while others will struggle with the excessive freedom. Nevertheless the little objections that can be made disappear compared to its virtues. This video game is technically impeccable, it offers a very interesting multiplayer mode, and is equipped with a campaign that should appear in the dictionary under the words intensity and immersion.

Sumptuously realised, stuffed with action and pushed along by an engaging plot. Far Cry 2 is how shooters should be made. [Dec 2008, p.86]

A remarkable array of physical effects that weren’t just pretty but actually relevant to the gameplay itself, stunning graphics and a story written also by the player instead of the developer alone: Far Cry 2 truly did impress me. Only the constant respawning of outposts had me grinding my teeth.

Nothing but brilliant. But we're already looking to the future. Our minds are already spinning at what Ubisoft Montreal might come up with for the inevitable "Far Cry 3."

It’s a shame that more wasn’t done with the story, as the shallow characters and lack of moral depth sits in stark contrast to the hard work spent on some of the most impressive game technology we’ve ever seen.

Unusual in that a first person shooter shows you the fictitious African country where real crimes against the civil population are fought in the name of profit. An intense experience in all aspects. [Nov 2008]

Far Cry 2 is phenomenal fun and brings new meaning to the term open world. It has surpassed my expectations and without a doubt Ubisoft Montreal have taken an uncut diamond and worked it into a nearly flawless gem.

Far Cry 2 is far from perfect, but the gorgeous African landscapes and thrilling gun-fights make up for the annoying enemy camps with their constantly spawning occupants. Ubisoft delivers an immersive First-Person-Shooter, which is easily on a level with Call of Duty 4.

More importantly, it has nowhere near as many bugs as something like "S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl," a title that bears many similarities. Add to the roughly 25 hour single-player campaign a remarkably easy-to-use map creation tool and a full multiplayer suite, and you've got one of the most complete overall gaming packages of the year, as well as one of the most ambitious.

Since the game is fairly open-ended as to how you play it and which side you choose, you could easily play this game all the way through a few times before you ever started feeling tired of it.

The action is high-quality, free-roaming stuff, and the game earns major points for its smart way of dealing with getting shot up, patched up, and bailed out. The story does keep you on a leash and your objectives tend to repeat without too much variation, but if you enjoy this line of work, Far Cry 2's dangerous African landscape is a great place to be a merc.

You want to freely drive through Africa, set the savannah on fire and run over zebras with your car, Far Cry 2 is the right choice.

It has its shortcomings, but it still makes its mark as one of the best releases of the year, at this point. The graphics and setting alone make it a real stand-out, and I like the fact that Ubisoft tried to go after something a bit more unique in a genre that is known for rampant replication.

Although you can't say the same for the plot, Far Cry 2's first-person action squeezes every last drop of potential out of the unique African setting.

Far Cry 2 scores right in the core area of first-person-shooters: action. Players who like some logic and a good story even in a first-person-shooter will have their problems with Far Cry 2. Ubisoft's Africa is beautiful, but life in all its glory is missing most of the time. Travelling takes a long time and you are forced to make absurd detours because of mountains and valleys. Far Cry 2 can be reproached with a lot of things, but once the Savannah is burning they are forgotten, at least temporarily, because fighting the APF and UFLL is so much fun.

Technical issues aside, Far Cry 2 is an epic (and epic-ly long) take on the first-person shooter. The setting, open word, and side quests make it feel more like a more action-oriented "Grand Theft Auto," or a less ridiculous "Just Cause," than the original. Which, admittedly, will annoy fans of the original (present company included).

Combat is thrilling – each weapon packing a solid, vicious blast; movement suggesting heft and momentum. [Dec 2008, p.80]

Far Cry 2 isn't able to deliver on its expectations, but is still a high quality shooter with lots of freedom and one of the most beautiful settings ever. The developers could have been more creative with the mission structure though.

I would say that Far Cry 2 is a well put together game that will be giving players hours of gaming fun for along while.

Visually impressive and ambitious but ultimately falls short of the hype. Attempts very hard to immerse you in a realistic sandbox world but fails to be anything but a simple, repetitive shooter. Driving across beautiful but lifeless world while fighting infinitely respawning enemies to complete unimaginative missions for people who all try to kill you can be summed up as beautiful but disappointing.

Far Cry 2 looks and sounds great (voice acting aside), but it has some gameplay mechanics that make progression through the game world a frustrating task.

Some games grow on you the more you play them, as you get used to the little idiosyncrasies and learn to appreciate the finer points. Far Cry 2 is at the opposite end of the spectrum, a game that makes it harder and harder for you to like it by placing more and more junk between you and its best features.
A mixed bag that redeems itself just enough to be worth playing, Far Cry 2 serves as a valuable experiment in open-world first-person shooter game design, but one that is not quite up to par with what developers like Crytek and GSC have accomplished.

If you plot a graph of genius times faltering game design, Far Cry 2 sits firmly in the top right. [Issue#13, p.50]
GameSpy
If you can bear some of the repetition in between missions, the missions themselves are a blast. The environment is among the most compelling ever put on a screen this year. And multiplayer is strong. Far Cry 2 may not live up to its full potential, but there's a lot here to enjoy regardless.

In 2007, Ubisoft sent to Africa a whole team of Far Cry 2 developers so they could record sounds, take pictures and soak in the spirit of "Heart of Darkness". Judging by the promotional videos, the guys had the time of their lives. It's a pity that the game fails to convey even the tiniest fracture of their emotions.

I bought this game looking forward to having lots of fun, as every review I read online and on youtube gave it a thumbs up. I could not believe that they actually pretended the game had a storyline. I was in denial, because after spending 30 bucks getting the game I forced myself to like it, but other than the graphics, there is nothing to like. People on this game absorb lead, and headdshots are very rare.... No one did their research on gun calibres as a 9mm is weaker than a 5.56mm in this game.It is painfully repetitive, and I though someone must have made the ending as a joke. Someone at Ubisoft must be laughing about how they managed to trick thousands upon thousands of people into buying such glorified trash. I no longer trust any companies that review game, and shall stick to player reviews only. Save your money for a real, enjoyable game, as this will only dissappoint you.

Installing this entertaining baloney is straight forward, as long as you accept SecuROM and toward the end of installation just before launching the game, there is an update and then... presto, the game is playable with no CD running around the African savannah trying to dodge fatigue inducing malaria. The first noticeable glitch is the graphics: sepia tones, bland, dull, drenched as if the hot African sun had scorched the fire prone grass to suck out any moisture from man-made surroundings. The hero, anti hero or idiot takes a vehicle ride and just as he arrives becomes sick with malaria?! Now, you wonder why this game wasnt titled 'Far Crap: Malaria'. When Malaria Idiot becomes conscious he has an interaction with some loser who doesnt look like a Jackal but is definitely human?! Next, Malaria Idiot stumbles downstairs into a shootout and gets shot up?! Now, Malaria Idiot is no more enlightened than at the beginning of this lacklustre gaming inexperience and at the end, Malaria Idiot will wish he were mauled and snuffed out by a voracious, Malaria Idiot eating lion or horned through by a rampaging rhino or after taking an uninspiring swim squashed by a sunbaking hippo. We could even settle for an elephant tusking the Jackal and Malaria Idiot into a painful, snail-slow, 1 to 2 FPS, kick-the-bucket ending. Ubisoft?! U Be Instantly Soft... yes, after playing this, my brain is spam mushy. At least, unlike the creators of this entertaining miasma of faux pas induced fait accompli, I was never a Richard Cranium...
Frederick N gave it a10:
First of all I want to state that I do not work for and am in no way associated with UBIsoft or Far Cry 2 other than being a gamer. I have, however, been a professional in the computer industry for over 40 years, building, repairing, designing, programming, and playing. The game's Story Mode is interesting and different than most I've played and displays the most awesome realistic 3-D graphics I've ever seen in a game. You create a profile and select who you are in the game and go from there. The beginner weapons are not to powerful or accurate, unless you get the Fortunes Pack add-on with the game, which has some very powerful weapons, vehicles and extra maps in it. The way that fire propagates with the direction of the wind and type of grass or brush adds a sense of reality to the game. The dynamic weather component and time of day (24 hour clock), adds realism and dynamics to the entire game environment. The story is simple and after you perform the minimal training required to open the game up into 1 of 4 starting points, your play options are almost endless. Healing yourself is a graphical experience you may or may not enjoy, because there are several types of heals that you do to yourself. Unlike most of the shooter games I have, you don't play the game in levels, you simply play the same game with changing dynamics and weapons. The game opens options as you make choices of how you want to customize your game experience as you play, which is like reading a book that you just can't seem to put down. I played this mode for a couple of months before playing multiplayer mode. The multiplayer mode is a first-class first person shooter game. The action is as intense as the graphics is gamer eye-candy. The server interface really needs to be re-engineered, in my opinion, but there are ways to get around the difficulties, which I have found very easy to do. The Far Cry 2 team developed one of the most awesome games I have, but that's not all you get either. There are many more freebies that are also included with the base game. 1.) There is a Far Cry 2 Benchmark test so you can test your system to perform and look any way you customize it and then you can tune the game to play according to reported results. 2.) There is one of the most powerful map editor programs I have ever seen. You can download any map, look at it and even go into the map in "game mode" and walk, run, or drive through the map. You can shoot, get ammo, heal yourself, blow stuff up, and even start fires, just to see how the map looks. The map creation tools are among the best. If you like designing and making game maps, you need to put your creativity hat on and get to work with this feature rich editor. The old phrase; "Amaze your friends." comes to mind when I saw how powerful this editor's tools are. 3.) Launch Server, which needs some brain power to discuss, but not here and now. The UBIsoft forums have great help in getting your server online, which may be a cool thing for you to do, just so you can play with your friends and family. I was looking for a game that I could afford to purchase for myself and some of my family and have it cheap enough that some of my gaming friends could also afford to purchase a copy. The current price for both the base game and the Fortunes Pack made it very affordable.

Ok i never do these "rate this game" crap becuase i never give a crap if someone buys a bad game. THere lost. But this..... this is just terrible. Not even the village idiot deserves to play this. This game in everyone stink beside graphically but who give a crap about. It all about gameplay and story. You can have the most best game looking in the world and it will suck if it dosnt have a good gameplay and story. This has nothing other then boredom and the feeling that "You Will Know" and i cant stress that enough, that youmeeting up with the dumbest ai in the world and that is game has nothing new to it that other great game title have already accomplished. Its a wannibee game. If anything Ubisoft pay high money for critics to rate there game prositivly. Kinda like those commerical you see on tv for a movie saying "its the best movie in the world and must be seen" when in reality it sucks and they pay random people to say it great to trick you. That goes this this game and many other ubisoft game other then Il-2 (which was never part of ubi soft in the first place) and splinter cell 1 2 and 3. All other games are just over advertised game they promote. If anything UBI lost an other customer. I will only buy a game from them if it was made by a other company that has there name but other then that never again. And for IGN review saying "More importantly, it has nowhere near as many bugs as something like "S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl," a title that bears many similarities" I have stalker and it 1000 times better then this crap for a game. It barely full of bugs because most were fix since you last review of it 3 years ago. It has more game play in it, action, horror, and etc then most games. It has a huge modding community and a story with 7 different ending depend on what you do. And stalker is 3-4 years old now yet it accomplish basically everything that this crappy game try to mimic. Stalker is the unsong hero that start nonlinear FPS with open world and etc. It has for its time great ai that will even outsmart this game Ai by a long shot, amazing wildlife (animal and mutants hunt each other and are non scripted. there only 3 thing there programed for is eat, sleep, and basic needs for life. nothing else). Everyone if you want a game that this crap for a game try to be Buy Stalker or Fallout 3 (even though fall out 3 is more RPG but hey at least it bring people back to play it more even if they finished it).

Well after going through the posts one thing is clear...if you expected this to be exactly the same as Far Cry 1 - (expectations will always lead to disappointment in life in any endeavor - you kids will eventually learn this), then you will likely be disappointed. It's different, but just because a few whiners think different is bad so doesn't make it true. I played very little of the first game, had no expectations for this one, and was thoroughly delighted. AI is decent, Fights are fun and intense, flame thrower's a joy to use (get up-wind of a complex, burn baby burn and peg them off when they flee, or watchem squirm - priceless). For those who are bitchin that this "too" real (old guns jam, you get malaria, etc) - go play doom 1 or tetris - that's likely more up your alley, lol - who ever bitched a game was too realistic? go do puzzles or something.
R C gave it a7:
This game is "ok," but that's really it. It's a good experience and it's fun, but the game gets repetitive and it's short. you pretty much drive back and forth and shoot people in between. Voice acting is blah most of the people are mumbling and i have decent speakers. Eye candy is great, but that seems like the only thing that really makes want to play more. It's fun to shoot guerrillas, but it's repetitive. They just made you drive across the map so the game takes longer to beat. I would try this first or look at game play videos on you tube or something, but most likely you'll either hate it or be neutral on it.
B00tsy C gave it a7:
I haven't finished the game yet, but here is my review after 10hours of story mode. The surroundings in general looks very good, but after a while you really start to notice that the whole forrest area is build up out of 4 or 5 different plant types and a couple tree and bush types. so after a couple of hours the whole game starts to look the same. It does look nice though with all the shadows and wind. Basicly the same goes for all the buildings in the game there is not much variation. couple of types of buildings and thats it. The AI of the enemies are average and predictable, but decent enough. The missions ive dont so far were preet boring. I honestly dont notice any difference with just driving/walking around or doing a mission. The force of enemies you encounter is basicly the same. The Movement of the vehicles are good, they havedone a good job on that. The walking part is much less, especialy jumping sucks....or i should say in inabillity to jump. You can jump up, but still a low rock or wood log you cant jump over no matter how hard you try. Only whily holding the sprint button i made a few succesfull jump attempts....pretty horrible. When a game is good i can play it like 8 hours straight fith the first play. C.O.D 4 for examply i finished in 1 go. This game however just cant hold my excitement. after 1 hour of playing im done with it and go do something else. So far the game is fun enough to keep playing it, but gets pretty boring after a short time of playing. This game is an improvemt with the original Far Cry, especialy the graphics and the whole sandbox idea has improved, but it still lacks a lot of stuff and a lot of it is just not well finished. Looks to me that far cry is a rushed job by the developers. Jut like the game Creed, it has a lot of potential, but the developers didnt "develope" it enough. All in all, it is good enough to buy as a side game. Don't expect to much of it though. The first few hours are the most fun when the scenery is still new to you, but then the repetitiveness starts to kick in and you start to notice the things that are bad about this game. 6.5 for this game.
