Summary

FIFA 09 on PC has been customized and designed exclusively for the platform. The gameplay engine features year-on-year improvements, delivering the detail demanded by football fans. FIFA 09 also features new customizable mouse and keyboard controls that deliver deeper, more intuitive command over your squad for more fluid football action. Now utilize the mouse as a point-and-click tool to send teammates on runs, make pin-point accurate passes, and blast powerful shots on target. Plus, you have the tools to draw up trick moves using the mouse or perform one of 32 skill moves in your arsenal, including new scoop turns, rainbow flicks, heel-to-heel knocks and ball rolls just like Ronaldinho. More than 17 customizable actions in all enable you to design the game to suit your style of play. FIFA 09 on PC now features new, leading-edge visuals that deliver graphics that exploits the power of hi-spec gaming PCs, as requested by PC gamers. Star players are featured in photorealistic quality with remodeled likenesses that show off skin tones and muscles in greater detail for ultra-realistic action. FIFA 09 also features customizable widgets that can now integrated into the menu system to connect you to the FIFA community and real-world football so you stay connected while playing. Gameplanet

A truly spectacular soccer title with exceptional player animations, ball handling and gameplay to boot. The AI will provide a significant challenge, but the implementation of one of the most advanced and complete online modes will mean that this game will truly last you a long time.

Cynamite

More realistic and a better atmosphere than ever – definitely the best FIFA-game up to date.

What a comeback! Finally the FIFA series has overcome its form crisis and is celebrating modern football (soccer) again, both graphically and gameplay wise. Not everything is new, but most things look better. Pro Evolution Soccer may be the better simulation, but the fast action of FIFA 09 is just as much fun. EA Sports is back in the top league.

PC Format

A far more tactical FIFA than we've seen before, though sorely lacking the 360's impressive new online mode. [Dec 2008, p.96]

3DJuegos

FIFA continues its improvements with 09, probably its best entry in the last years. Traditionally the soccer saga of EA was well-known by its quality in the licenses and by the brutal amount of official championships, now its also known by its gameplay, that continues its slow progress in PC.

Pelit (Finland)

Probably the best PC-version in the series so far. The game looks great and new animations add freshness to the gameplay. Mouse and keyboard control is a nice addition, although it is a bit clumsy in action. There are also some problems with joypad and keyboard controls. [Sept 2008]

VideoGamer

PC FIFA fans have wanted a little more effort put into their version for years and finally the moaning and commitment to the series has paid off. FIFA 09 is the best FIFA the PC has seen in years and a great step forward for the series on the platform.

The PC version has clearly improved over the previous editions, but still lacks the luxury of the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions.

Play (Poland)

It's the best iteration in many years, and certainly the most sophisticated. Even if the newfangled mouse control mode isn't to your liking, you'll find that the game has been strengthened at its core and raised to a new level of quality. [Oct 2008]

Total PC Gaming

A good performance from EA, with FIFA playing a fine game of footy. [Issue#13, p.58]

Gamers.at

FIFA 09 for PC has blown the personal bar I’ve set out of the water – but not in terms of presentation and complexity of the comments thrown about during a game. [Issue # 16]

PC Zone UK

Not PC friendly. [Dec 2008, p.75]

70

LEVEL (Czech Republic)

New control system, player animations and defense play make this game feel more real but it’s still far behind all other console versions. Mouse controls are surprisingly cool. [Nov 2008]

PC Gamer UK

It's Product Football. And in that order. Maybe next year, eh? [Christmas 2008, p.70]

60

PC PowerPlay

Where it all falls down is in the core game. The reality is that this is more or less the same FIFA we've had for the last couple of years. While all of PC FIFA's console brethren have married and moved into nice engines, our favourite platform is left with the gaming equivalent of a washed out, beaten up trailer. [Christmas 2008, p.81]

Peter N gave it a7:
I have been playing fifa for a few years now and this is by far the best version yet for the PC. It finally has a "next-gen" graphics engine--which makes a huge difference. The new EA Live feature is finally a system that updates player stats in relation to their real-life form--something that should have been implemented easily in all sports titles 3 years ago. That being said, there are plenty of bugs to make the gameplay clunky at times. The keeper is still super vulnerable at the close post and godly at the back post, there is still plenty of randomness involved in many aspects of field play, and (possibly worst of all) the game shipped without full support for almost ANY game pad controller. Everyone will have to go into the game files themselves and edit some of the code to force the game to use your gamepad/joystick correctly (see the fifa forums for the complicated instructions on how to do this). That being said, the game is very good and probably the best soccer title to date. You will just have to look at its good side, fix the support for your controllers, and get over the rest of the smaller bugs.

Francois B. gave it an8:
At first I was really pissed off because it seemed to be loaded with the same crap as FIFA08, witch was really bad. FIFA 08 was just a crappy ass brush up of FIFA 07(great game), but it was made worse. It was really laggy and with choppy gameplay. Like I said at first it looked like FIFA 09 was the same, because it only utilizes one core of my Core 2 Duo Cpu, I dont know why. But then I decided I would give it a go and it growed on me. The new mouse and keyboard controls are absolutely awesome! They give very nice control and precision like never before. The close-up visuals are also very nicely done and looks great. I hope they can fix the problem with the game only running on one core, because that would make it run a lot smoother!!
