Game Info

Publisher: Vivendi Universal / Empire Interactive

Developer: Bugbear Entertainment

Genre(s): Racing, Driving

Players: 8

ESRB Rating: T (Teen)

Release Date: August 1, 2006

Summary

Featuring an enhanced version of the original's physics engine with even faster driving track designs, FlatOut 2 also boasts numerous improvements, enhancements and additions to make the title the definitive FlatOut experience. Twice as many vehicles, a more sophisticated career mode, additional race environments, double the number of tracks, twice as many mini-games along with brand new and much requested online multiplayer modes are just some of the exhaustive features that are included in FlatOut 2. With more than 5,000 fully destructible objects on every track as well as 40 deformable parts on each vehicle, physical interaction in a racing game is taken to unprecedented heights. With a greater emphasis placed on causing destruction on the track by offering greater rewards, game play will be even more frantic than ever. Drivers will need to tear into competitors' cars, trash the local scenery, litter the track with obstacles, while at the same time trying to concentrate on their own race in a bid to cross the line first. The ever-popular Ragdoll mini-games from the original FlatOut game make a welcome return and are better than ever with 12 Ragdoll events, a Ragdoll Championship and full online support. New Ragdoll events include basketball, baseball and royal flush cards. [Empire Interactive]

Pelit (Finland)

An outrageous orgy of twisted metal and flying debris. The races are fast and furious. Too bad the AI drivers cheat to keep the races exciting. [Aug 2006, p.28]

GamingTrend

Good choice of rock music in the playlist.

AtomicGamer

This is a purely arcade racer, and its sense of speed isn't nearly as good as, say, Burnout Revenge. Car crashes themselves are fun, but not nearly as satisfying as a destruction-oriented racing game should be.

IGN

FlatOut 2 is one hell of a fun racing game. Sure, many of its elements feel a tad generic, like the track and character design, but what it really comes down to is the racing itself and Bugbear has done a great job at drawing a line between control and complete chaos.

It's not a game you'll still be playing in a few years, but in the meantime its destructible racing at its best.

PC Format

Satisfying and technically proficient carnage. Watch that bodywork fly. [Sept 2006, p.103]

Play.tm

If FlatOut 2 proves anything it's that there's room for more than one type of racer that strongly encourages wreckage at every twist and turn, and it's refreshing to see that despite EA's undeniable might smaller developers are willing to have a go at competing, often showing them a thing or two about game design in the process.

Games Radar (in-house)

Once you get used to the steering and can take the corners, FlatOut 2 is an awesome racer with enough destruction and mayhem to last you awhile. And if you do get frustrated, the game provides plenty of ways to relieve stress - like launching your helpless driver into really hard objects.

The single-player Career won't take all that long to complete, but with a hugely entertaining multiplayer mode both on and offline, there's a good chance you'll continue playing for a while after.

PC Gamer

Although not as flashy or well-funded as EA's "Need For Speed" series, Flatout 2 blazes a unique trail through the arcade racing world--one collision at a time. [Nov. 2006, p.118]

GameTrailers

FlatOut 2 is one of the most chaotic racing games ever made. Whether you’re playing on or offline, you’ll be lucky if you can last two minutes on the track without eating twisted metal.

Worth Playing

It's somewhat juvenile, but that's a pretty big part of its drawing power. It's a digital portrayal of the ugly side to motorized vehicular sports: metallic, mechanized destruction and speed.

Jolt Online Gaming UK

There’s no getting away from the fact that FlatOut 2 is damned good fun, and will bring you back to the days of Destruction Derby and its ilk. However, as much as we appreciate the tweaks – and that’s really all they are – to the first game, there are still a few too many fundamental flaws which bring out a wail of frustration or a tut as you consider how easily certain annoyances could have been avoided.

Awesome paint job and horsepower, but you might not rack up a lot of mileage on this puppy.

If Flatout 2 was (just) music, it'd be a second album of commercial punk rock. [Sept 2006, p.92]

PC Zone UK

The larger number of tracks, cars and mini-games feel like only relatively minor improvements over the original and the whole thing ends up feeling like more of an expansion than the next evolution. [Sept 2006, p.62]

An invigorating shot of speed and carnage that tops that of the original, even if it does fall short of the mighty "Burnout." [Aug 2006, p.121]

FlatOut 2, as a racing game, is competent, but marred by a poor sense of speed. [Aug 2006, p.63]

Where FlatOut felt like racing in a field, FlatOut 2 feels like racing on a film set. It has been reshaped into the archetype, competent arcade racer. [Aug 2006, p.89]

Since we are talking about a game that's more about crashing than flash, it could use more grit and dirt. And better physics. [Nov. 2006, p.80]

IR0n W. gave it a9:
One of the best racing games for pc. The physics and graphics alone will make your jaw drop. I've been racing mulitplayer in this game since late 2006 and still i can't get away from it. I play at large resolution 1920x1200 and the graphics are very rewarding to the eyes. The online community is very international and has its share of racing legends, from the flatout perspective. All in all, if you like racing, highspeed wrecks, and gorgeous graphics then don't let this game pass you by.

Albot gave it a9:
Its great, i love it! The multiplayer part is just the best. So amazing funny to crash into your friends when doing LAN-party. And the graphics is top! and all the details.

Fizz Zizz gave it a9:
Best car racing, car smashing game I've ever played. I am addicted to this game -- it looks fantastic, the tracks are amazingly well designed. Furious gameplay keeps me coming back for more. Only thing is that online play often crashes when trying to connect to a race or derby. I hope they make Flatout3 and fix the online issues for one of the best racing games ever. When it does work, online play is a blast. The car models are superb. The car wrecks and smashing is very satisfying on my wide LCD screen.

SiLenT ALi P. gave it a10:
Whooooo crashing is my passion and im sure all the people who love racing and crashing will enjoy this game.

Michael gave it a9:
This is fun! Smashing other cars without getting hurt yourself. Reminds me of classics, like Crash Car Derby and other car crashing race games.

Bo P. gave it a10:
Amazing Fun I have been addicted since I bought it the online element will only enhance the fun even more, trying to get all my friends to buy it off steam great work. If there's a flatout 3 I will gladly upgrade my gaming laptop to support it.

Burnley W. gave it a10:
This game is highly addictive, and loads of fun. I don't normally like racing or derby games much, but this one is great! Highly recommended!
