Summary

(Also known as "Worldwide Soccer Manager 2008") Football Manager returns before Christmas packed full of new features for fans of the much-acclaimed series from Sports Interactive to feast their eyes on. Transfer Center - A new way of managing all current transfer and loan bids for your club, both incoming and outgoing, making it easier to compare bids and reject or accept them. Finance Revamp - Sports Interactive have updated the finance area of Football Manager 2008 to better reflect the ever-changing modern football world. More information is available to the manager too, including, but not limited to, corporate matchday income, season ticket news, investment funds, improved sponsorships, collective win bonuses and the ability to move around funds from the wage budget and transfer budget (and vice versa) at any point to help you in your quest for the ideal squad. International Management - The international management gameplay has been completely revamped for Football Manager 2008, including, but not limited to, media improvements, international retirements, player interaction, international scouting, improved national pool selection, captain selection and a separation of international and club morale for players. Match Flow - The largest change to matchdays in a Sports Interactive game since the introduction of the 2D match engine. Match flow brings more atmosphere to matchdays with match previews, team talks, opposition player instructions, the match itself, half time and post match now seamlessly following on from one another. There's no more pausing to make tactical changes and you'll find a mini-radar pitch whilst making those tactical changes to keep you in touch with what's going on in the match. [Sega Europe]

Still as addictive as ever. It may no seem so different at first but there are good changes. [Dec 2007, p.70]

I wonder if the people at SI Games haven’t just reached a boundary that they won’t be able to cross… FM 2008 has over a hundred new features and although I love most of them, this game is becoming more and more like an encyclopedia – the entry is hindered by a barrier of countless details to grasp and things to remember. But behind it awaits the best football manager on Earth. [Dec 2007]

VideoGamer

What's brilliant about Football Manager is how accessible it is, and how it caters for so many people, and this is about the most accessible version of the game yet.

The uncanny knack of mirroring real life is testament to the massive infrastructure of international scouts that provides the player database, allied to the witchcraft that goes on under the bonnet. [Christmas 2007, p.85]

AceGamez

Each year it seems that the minute gameplay tweaks can have very little impact on the way the game plays, but every time we find ourselves finding the improvements have been so well implemented that it's hard to imagine going back to the way the beautiful game used to be played.

Football Manager 2008 is without a shadow of a doubt the best football management game available. It’s the same game it has always been, with more features.

More an evolution than a revolution, but it certainly has enough new features to drag you back in. [Christmas 2007, p.62]

Without doubt, it is the most realistic, rewarding and compelling football title around, so we can only hope that this prosaic update is a blip, rather than a sign of serious stagnation.

Sports Interactive have definitely returned the Football Manager franchise to where it belongs and created the best management sim on the market, although to be honest, there's not much competition.

FM 2008 proves that sometimes a minor tune-up is really all you need. [Mar 2008, p.65]

Eurogamer

If you take FM2008 at face value, you're left standing eyeball to eyeball with the finest football management game ever made. But just like Aliens: Special Edition was fleetingly more engaging than the cinema release, this year's FM feels like a game that further polishes an already highly buffed formula but fails to take it to a genuinely higher level.

Total Video Games

It's another year and another Football Manager. When good things are this consistent we often forget how lucky we are to have them. That said, this year's game is particularly thin on new features, but it's still the same great package that's been re-jigged slightly to keep us interested.

Lee K. gave it a9:
An excellent Game, well planned out fantastic reality.

Ali O. gave it a7:
The best football-sim there is, but still needs alot of work. Implementing lots of little pointless features, whilst negating improving exisiting features should be something SI look to reverse in the future.

Paul E. gave it a4:
Well, my score explains the only missing part of an other way quite good game: no match simulation. as 2 d cannot these days be accepted as quality simulation. I just imagine real world managers finding out the result of their work watching text descriptions of the games or buttons simulations.when we talk about any kind of simulation games (and football managers are simulations) real simulation is a must. a clear example: why should I train dribling or technique or long passes if I only see the effects of simple passing or shooting?it`s like eating plastic after you cooked real food. I`LL NEVER COOK FM AGAIN. EVER!!!

Weng C> gave it a9:
They have improved the flow of the game and more notably the user friendly features. I say this is the best they ever could come up with but hope to see it improves the user experience.

G. F. gave it a6:
SI have continued with an amazing game here by adding more than 100 new features including better supporter confidence and a style of media presentation that draws you into the game in more depth than previous encarnations. However these new features come at a cost. I strongly advise that you do not purchase this game until at least the first patch has been released. The In-store version seems to be unfinished with dozens of game-runining bugs both in matches and at pretty much every stage of the game (E.g. players NEVER closing down the person in possesion no matter what tactics you instruct them to use, Winning a game 2-1 and then after the match being told that you lost 2-0, A tonne of goals being disallowed and not being able to critisise the referee without punishment from the FA even though replays show that an offside call was indeed incorrect). SI have recognised most of these bugs in the forum and are hurredly working on them however it is very unprofessional to have released this with so many problems. Once this has been done and if it's done correctly then my review would go up to potentially a 9/10 Would have been

Sean Daniel B. gave it a10:
Another excellent addition to the series, the International Management aspect is a great touch as is the fiance revamp. Good-bye Social Life ;).
