Summary
FreeStyle is the first foray into building a North American online gaming community that combines sports with RPG elements. Whether a hardcore or casual gamer, enter an immersive world that tests your skills in the ultimate street basketball to hit virtual playgrounds around the country. Dress the part, hit up the musical play list, then break some ankles as you team up with and against players just like the pick-up games of Venice Beach to Rucker Park – only this time you have the skills. Dude... don’t just sit there, ball’s in your court. [Vivendi Universal]

Overall, Freestyle Street Basketball has the potential to be a neat game. The idea is solid, the graphics and overall style are neat and the gameplay is pretty fun. However, the horrible players you have to get through to eventually play with the decent ones will turn people away and the lag will push even more away.

This is a good sports game for people who don't like sports games, i.e. me. [Vol 3, Issue 2, p.62]
PC Gamer
Free mode is definitely worth trying, but don't go out and buy the store copy unless you're comfortable spending extra cash for in-game items. [Sept 2007, p.60]
GameDaily
Freestyle Street Basketball's low cost makes it an appealing option for people who crave easy, fast-paced competition. In addition, it lacks the complex controls found in more expensive sports games, and costs just $19.99.

Despite its technical issues Freestyle Street Basketball is a charming, fun street-style basketball MMO with a great value proposition. With its five-minute play time and free low-level game, it can be enjoyed by those looking for a quick game on an afternoon lunch break.

So even though I can't give this title a really high score, you don't have anything to lose by checking out FreeStyle for yourself. You won't get much customization without spending a little dough, but the core game mechanics are fun on their own.

The game can be addictive and enjoyable, but when you get down to the last two minutes of a tight game and are suddenly booted to your Windows desktop, or the lag is so bad that you are rendered immobile or things are happening that have no base in real physics or logic (like sliding across the court to a position the game determines you are at regardless on how often you try to move to get involved with the game), then frustration will mount.

Yes, the graphics are bland. Yes, the controls are limiting. Yes, the action is slow-paced. Yes, there’s a bit of price-gouging with the “bills” system, especially if you want to get to the higher levels in the game. However, for fans of pick-up basketball, there's no denying that Freestyle Street Basketball is a fun outlet--and that’s the whole point, right?

Freestyle has a lot heart and, just like a real game of basketball, it takes heart to be any good. This, of course, does not say that it is not without faults, but for $20 how can you turn down a game that could shape the outcome of a new massive multiplayer online genre?

Freestyle Street Basketball is for those who enjoy outspending their opponents to buy the coolest gear and not so much for gamers just looking for a fun street hoops game.

Freestyle Street Basketball isn't as big as it claims, but for the price, the hyperbole is forgivable.

Matic R. gave it a10:
The game is absolutely fantastic! Ofc it has some bugs but they're improving it all the time. There's also some lag but nothin more than you'd expect from a MMO (like 10 times less than you'd expect actually). Gameplay is great, teamwork pays off, skill is a lot more important than lvl or gear of the character. TBH gear is only there to improve your stats by a tiny bit, it's all about skill. I reccomend everyone to try this game out (it's free till lvl 15 so go ahead), even if you dont consider yourself a sports fan or a fan of sports games. The game has best things out of 2 worls. A world of sports games combined with a MMO world. Grinding doesnt seem annoying at all since there's no actuall battles against NPC, but as mmo players would say.. it's all pvp.

This game is the coolest game ever!!!!! I am pretty much addicted to it! Its SOOOOOOO fun this just may be the #1 Sports Online game. You can do so many things like buy clothes to help your attributes buy Skills like turnaround 3pointshot and freestyles lilke the on da floor dribbling move one of my favorite!
J. S. gave it a7:
An enjoyable game, for the most part, in a genre that desperately needs more titles (online sports games for PC). There are a few gameplay issues that hurt the game a little bit (snatching rebounds as soon as they hit the rim, "kukgi" whatevertf that is) but it is still good for a few games every once in a while. Despite basically being an MMORPG, it never feels like a grind to level up, and unless you are playing people drastically more advanced than you, you usually have a chance to win.
Nick L. gave it a10:
I'm hooked, its like crack, but disguised as candy.
Roy gave it an8:
I just started this game, but it seems pretty cool.
