Summary

A frenzied action game in which players battle each other with one of three distinct races: The Meccs, the Sea Reapers, or the giant named Kabuto. These three species are highly incompatible with one another, and are all battling for supremacy over the islands on which they inhabit. [Interplay]

Games Radar UK (Pre-2006)

Alternately frantic, considered and hilarious; utterly gorgeous throughout and outstandingly innovative. Absolutely essential.

It sucks you into its weird world and doesn't let you go.

GamePower

It offers more of everything you'd expect and then some -- gorgeous graphics, incredible animations, visceral sound effects, terrific cut scenes, wild weapons, unique characters (wise-cracking Brits, a diaphanously dressed magical sea nymph, and a towering giant), and deadly enemies with effective AI.

Da Gameboyz

What sets this game apart from the rest is the variety in the gameplay, which combines RTS with shooter, as well as the fact that you get to play three distinct races, each with completely different abilities.

PC Gameworld

I've played some dandies in the last few months, and the competition out there is stiff, but Giants sends them all running for cover. Get it now. The highest score I've given out here at PC Gameworld.

Armchair Empire

A great game. The humour is consistent right from the start and nearly always borders on ridiculous, which is a nice parry to the action.

Even with its bugs, Giants is still one of the most creative, innovative, and entertaining games I've played in years.

This game is a riot, start to finish, and multiplayer is especially entertaining. The game's few flaws can ideally be corrected with the aforementioned patch.

GMR Magazine

A shooter/strategy hybrid full of weird British humor, unique and beautiful 3D graphics, and naked lady sea monsters. [Feb 2003, p.94]

Daily Radar

This is a good game with a lot of depth, variation in gameplay and fantastic visuals. It's got a funny story and likeable characters.

Game Over Online

The gameplay differences between each species make this one of the most innovative games to come out in awhile.

FiringSquad

The key thing that kept me playing and happy was the story. I really enjoyed the dialog and plot more than anything else. If there is one game you want to play for comedy Giants is it. The story doesn't have much depth and it does taper off towards the end, but while you have it, it is obscenely funny.

ActionTrip

Vibrant, sharp, and pretty are just a few adjectives that may sum up my final thoughts on the game's sound and appearance… And it all goes perfectly well with the offbeat nature of the game -- the edgy attitude, and the genuinely funny Pythonesque dialogue.

Yeah, Giants has its flaws, but it's one of the most competent -- and clever -- action games we've laid our hands on,

Spank!

A technically devastating graphics engine, the funniest script in computer games history, and a soupcon of strategy, together with imaginative and variety packed action.

GameZone

Giants Citizen Kabuto has great central characters, choice camera angles, and a nice shooter perspective. But while the terrain elements are wonderful, the enemy (and enemy AI) is simplistic.

Adrenaline Vault

Put simply, the gameplay is fun, although the game is so short -- due largely to the shoddy, easily manipulated AI -- that some players will feel somewhat robbed.

Gamers' Temple

If it wasn't so buggy, allowed for mid-mission saves, and had better multiplayer support, it would rate much higher. As it stands, though, it will be a labor of love for some, a frustrating burden for others.

PC Gamer

There's lots of entertainment here, if you're the patient type. [Mar 2001, p.64]

Yahoo! Games

Possibly the biggest strike against Giants, though, is that much of the gameplay is, well, kind of boring.

Computer Games Magazine

Of drive-in movie reviewer Joe Bob Brigg's infamous three B's, Giants' developers in a politic move took out two (Blood and Breasts). The third, Beasts, is still enough to carry the game, though the addition of a fourth B—Bugs—is certainly regrettable.

What Our Users Said

The average user rating for this game is 9.6 (out of 10) based on 11 User Votes

James F. gave it a10:
I know it's a late vote but that sums it up. Here I am in 2007 and still playing this fantastic game, I never understood why it got such low reviews. I keep coming back to this game and everytime it makes me howl with laughter! Comedy Action and Fun... I want Giants 2! The voyage home.

John M. gave it a10:
Just about perfect. The humor and quirkiness remind me of Shiny, when they were making good games (before they got the Matrix license). Multiplayer is really cool, though the races are highly unbalanced. I remember Giants came out relatively close to American McGee's Alice, another perfect 10. 2000 was a very good year. Unfortunately, it looks like Planet Moon has gone strictly to consoles for now, McGee has spent the past 5 years drinking/twiddling his thumbs rather than making another stellar game...but at least we did get Psychonauts this year. It was so good it almost made up for the long drought of highly creative games of this sort.

Shawn H. gave it a10:
A very unique and fun game. This is one of the best games I've every played. Good graphics and rip roaring dialogue will keep you chuckling through the game. During the game you will play as all three races, and each are wildly different and entertaining. I enjoyed the base buliding levels, and enjoyed defending my little city. But nothing beats walking around as Kabuto, and watching him grow bigger and bigger. Its loads of fun to eat any critter that moves, but extra juicy fun to skewer them on your horns for a convenient snack. Destruction has never been so much fun.

Miguel M. gave it a 10:
IT´S THE BEST GAME I'VE EVER SEEN.

Brandon E. gave it a 10:
This game is probably the most addictive shooter to be created since Half-Life: Counter-strike. The sounds are great, the graphics are amazing, and the gaming companies out there that say it's boring, well maybe you would like the barbie games a little better, since... obviously you have no taste in games. The awesome acting makes the game even better, I haven't seen one bug yet, so I don't know where you guys are seen em.

Jonas A. gave it a 10:
Rock out! After playing the fantastic Single Player missions, the MP-mode totally rocks the world! I'm a counter-strike player of above medium rank so I've played my share of stunning Multi-player... THE GIANT ROXX!
