The glorious age of Rome - a time when the empire was at its peak, envied and feared by friend and foe alike. All across the provinces governors spared no expense to build cities of unparalleled splendor and magnificence and leave their mark in history. In Glory of the Roman Empire, players enter this time of wonder and use their city building skills to create cities that would humble even Rome itself. PC Gameworld
The best game out there for casual players, or players new to the simulation genre.

Although this is a great game, I’m not sure if it’s a great 40 dollar game. With no online component other than an online leaderboard and some very simple yet addicting gameplay, perhaps 40 bucks is stretching it.

If you are looking at making the game even more authentic, you can play the entire game in Latin. You can either use this to help hone your Latin skills or if you are just going for something different.

It has a gorgeous engine which lets you create stunning scenes with your towns and cities. Anyone with a flare for simpler Latin times or who really enjoy city builders – you don’t want to miss out on this.

Looks beautiful, but is otherwise a by-the-numbers building game. Fun, but provides no almost no challenge at all. [Aug 2006, p.42]
GamingExcellence
The constant strategic thinking and planning required to keep things moving forward are well balanced and will draw players in very quickly.

Veterans who stick with the game will definitely be rewarded with some charming and memorable moments but they may be better off holding out to see how the other Roman city games shape up later this year.

Packs a lot of value, and is certainly something every fan of the city building genre should look closely at. It looks good, and is mostly a real treat to sit down and play with. However, it's overall difficulty is low, and occasionally gameplay touches on the tedious.

So while the game's atmosphere, its intuitive interface and visual splendor are very commendable, it simply seems to lack more direction in terms of design. It's like the developers had all the tools, but lacked more imagination.

It doesn’t offer the personality or adjustable details we’re used to in its predecessors, but it’s nicely balanced and a big package, with over two dozen campaign scenarios and endless sandbox recreation.

The challenges and free create mode are more likely to be where experienced city builders will spend their time and I just don't think there's enough of that to keep them coming back.

It’s nice to have a streamlined, intuitive interface, but at the same time, part of the attraction for city-building games is the management aspect.

Classical, but no classic. Bread and circuses at their most generic. [Sept 2006, p.105]
GamerFeed
Not the best looking, and certainly not for the impatient, Glory of the Roman Empire gets the job done in a unique and enjoyable way.

Slow progress and lack of originality detract from a fun if bland title. [Aug 2006, p.100]
GameShark
It’s not a “sim for dummies” by any means, but compared to some of the other games in the genre, it is a bit skimpy in the depth department.

If you are looking for something that you can play leisurely, then you might want to take a look at it. If you want something with a bit more depth, you would be better off looking elsewhere.

If you tire of raising armies and would much rather plant a dozen wheat farms and watch those bakers go, CDV’s latest offering hits the spot.

Not great, but okay. There's nothing really new or exciting in this game, unless you want a gift for your major-history-buff dad. Other than that, this is probably a title best left to all the hard-core strategy gamers out there.

It's perhaps not in the same league as "Children Of The Nile" in terms of depth and complexity, but it certainly has its won sedate charm. [Sept 2006, p.80]
Jolt Online Gaming UK
Personally, we’d probably rather pick up the Rome DVD box set – there’s more than thighs exposed in that little number.

It looks pretty, there are quite a few game modes, and there's a very long campaign. However, for those of us who don't find enjoyment in watching paint dry, building a city in real time is too laborious to be fun.

A fairly simple game that offers little challenge once you understand the basics. Yet it’s still charming in its own right.

Pretty darn easy to get into, but it doesn't have a ton of depth or historical significance beyond that.

There isn't anything strikingly bad about the game, but it's an ultimately flavorless one that leaves us hoping the upcoming CivCity: Rome and Caesar IV pack a bit more of a Roman punch.

If you've never built an Empire on your PC, Glory of the Roman Empire is a good place to start. For the rest of us, there isn't much to see here.

Experienced urban architects longing to delve deeply into Rome's characteristic social and economic structures will be fully disappointed by Glory's simplicity.

A bog-standard historical city-builder and we can like it, lump it, or - my recommended reaction - just ignore it.
Haemimont Games takes such a casual approach to everything, from the ancient Roman setting to the quickie campaign scenarios, so that many players will find little here to latch onto and really enjoy.
Read Full Review >Games Radar (in-house)
Walks a thin line between being welcoming to newbies and too basic for your average builder. Even as an intro, it is only useful for a session or two, so you may be better off waiting for the next one to come along.

It may lack challenge, but it's a decent start for newcomers who won't be thrown to the simulation lions.

The military aspect of the game is almost non-existent, while the economy is overly simplified. [Oct. 2006, p.78]
PC Gamer
With its simplistic and repetitive gameplay, Glory of the Roman Empire neglected my needs as a hardcore strategy gamer. [Oct. 2006, p.71]
