Summary
Gothic II takes you on an even greater journey of adventure and discovery. The plot continues from the cliff-hanger of the original: After the imprisoned colony members are victorious, collapsing the magical barrier, the former Prison Colony is struck by a terrible earthquake, claiming the lives of many. The majority of survivors seize this opportunity to escape with only a handful of people remaining in the derelict prison.

Quandary
Finally, this game deserves the highest score I can give. The things that really matter are here. For those who enjoy this type of RPG, this game offers an experience you shouldn't pass up.

This game will change what you think about RPGs. The immense world provides hours of gameplay and there are enough different paths to take that the game could be won in any way you want.

Its dynamic world is one of the most interesting RPG settings ever. [Feb 2004, p.78]
Next Level Gaming
The storyline, while cliché, has some interesting twists, and the progression of the narrative through the chapters, and increased sense of doom that occurs midway through the game as you face a orc horde backed by dragons leads to some interesting moments.

On a broader scale, there is little here to frighten away the average RPG gamer and Gothic II is presented in such a way that those who and not "Role Players" but like a little story with their action will be pleasantly surprised Gothic II.

Despite Gothic IIs problematic inventory system, as well as its sometimes-difficult battles, it is still a very fun RPG.
Considering both its many quests and its trial-and-error gameplay, Gothic II is a substantially long game, and its different quests and different professions allow for some good replay value.

The world feels less generic and more immersive than even "Morrowind's." [Feb 2004, p.88]
IGN
Has some great content and quest progression lying underneath an incredibly clunky exterior. If the combat didn't have such a high learning curve, the difficulty ramped up a bit slower, and the interface wasn't terrible, this would be a pretty good game.

If you can ignore the acting or enjoy it for camp, the rest of Gothic II is an incredible experience.

Rarely inconsistent, often frustrating, and always flexible, the world of Gothic II is, for lack of a more appropriate term, the most believable virtual place you can visit. [Feb 2004, p.59]
Worth Playing
It's similar to games like "Morrowind," so if you enjoy a somewhat slow paced game that's open-ended and challenging, you'll also enjoy Gothic 2.

Provided you have the necessary levels of patience, Gothic 2 inexorably draws you in. Its resolutely old-fashioned without being tired, and credits you with, gasp, some intelligence instead of handing over every little thing on a plate. Now if just one single MMORPG could be this good.

A good follow up to an original RPG. Here's hoping Bethesda does "Gothic III" and fixes the inventory shortcomings.
Anyone who appreciates action-oriented RPGs in which the focus is on creating your own story rather than following one that has been predetermined, this game is required playing. Not only is it open-ended, but also it is massive.
This game time is artificially prolonged by ridiculous amounts of difficulty. The clunky and unresponsive control scheme is bad enough, but you start so weak that you're forced to do a lot of mindless leveling up before you can do anything interesting.
One of the biggest design differences between Gothic II and practically all other RPGs is that it doesn't ramp up in difficulty as you go. Encounters are tough in the beginning, often overwhelming, and don't get easier as your skills improve.

With character models that look like they crawled off the Dreamcast, muddy textures and minor but frequent collision issues, this is not exactly a pretty game. [Jan 2004, p.70]

David C gave it a10:
An absolutely mind-blowingly great game, at least it was for me. At the time I stumbled across this, while bored and looking for a random game to kill time with, I had never experienced such a detailed and cohesive world. This game still highly impresses me, as does its expansion, The Night of the Raven.
Asen B. gave it a10:
One of the best gaming experiences I have ever had and I have played a lot of games. The story is captivating, the game itself is challenging (that refers to Gothic II Gold which includes The Night of the Raven expansion game). The player is free to chose between three completely different classes and that can be done by the most realistic way you can imagine - you actually have to find out what classes there are and fulfil the corresponding quest. You are going to feel your character and you will be lost in the truly beautiful world around him.
I´m God ... gave it a10:
Oblivion, Morrowind are stupid and boring. If you play gothic gothicII or gothicIII you will understand this words(believe me i´m God).
Runar J. gave it a10:
This game is simply stunning. It's just... It's my favorite game of all time. It has everything. It's story is very involving, and unlike a lot of other RPGs, you really feel that you are living within the world of Gothic 2, making decisions with consequences. Just this will keep you going for hours and hours once you settle after the rather hard and unforgiving opening minutes. Give it 30 minutes to one hour, and you'll be lost in the world of Gothic 2 forever.
Matt L. gave it a9:
An excellent game. It has a few glitches and a fairly steep learning curve, but if you loved the first one or just love RPG's in general, this is a lost gem.
Marcel J. gave it a10:
This is the best game ever. Although graphics are not up to date it has a very nice story and a fascinating combat system (not this easy click, slay and win). If you have some nights left, get it and play!
Paul H. gave it a9:
One of the most enjoyable RPGs I've played. Took me hours to complete, but was fun the whole time. One of the very few that was playable without a single patch and with very little fuss at the highest res. As a player you can choose a variety of actions which don't paint you into an in escapable position from which you have to re-start the whole game to make any progress. Don't understand why it received such a luke-warm reception from the buying public! Looking foreward to G3!
