Damn, is this one fine game. If you've ever dreamed of shredding blistering licks in front of an adoring audience, you need to pick up Guitar Hero III.

Kudos to Aspyr for making a great port of the game and keeping all of the important aspects of the Guitar Hero III experience intact, including the online play, which is as simple as jumping into the online menu and challenging other guitar heroes. Still, if you can buy the console versions of the game, you're better off doing that.

Everyone got it right where it counts, though, and the third entry into the Guitar Hero franchise is just as fun as ever.

With Guitar Hero 3 from Activision you can feel like a real rockstar - without the need for guitar lessons or changing your hairstyle.

Why on Earth would you learn to play real guitar when you can play this? [Jan 2008, p.72]
GameDaily
Even with its faults, Guitar Hero III is still a wildly addictive music game that works just as well, if not better, on the PC.

A solid port of a fairly awesome game. If not for the high system demands and random slowdowns, it might actually compete with the 360 and Wii for the best version available.

Prefer a beastly PC over a console? It’s about time you played some Guitar Hero. Fun for kids and adults, great alone or with friends, and perfect for pretending you’re awesome at something you may well suck at in real life. [Mar 2008, p.57]
PC Format
If you can haul a high spec rig into the living room, then go for it. Otherwise, this may not inspire that vital spirit of rocking out. [Feb 2008, p.104]
PTGamers
Guitar Hero is welcome on the PC, and will certainly delight those who were jealous of their rockstar console friends – or at least those who are able to run the game without issues.

The PC version is a nice attempt that finally gives PC gamers the chance to experience one of the best game franchises to start up in the past few years. However, the laggy performance and slowdown makes the PC version pale in comparison to its console brethren.

Guitar Hero III for the PC is a decent game. If you have a PC with the latest hardware and no consoles but you want to play Guitar Hero, you can’t really go wrong here.

Guitar Hero III delivers the rock to PC owners, but it does it with the performance capability of a second-rate bar band.

Guitar Hero III's shortcomings feel like the unfortunate consequence of being a hastily made port. [Jan 2008, p.86]

Campbell gave it a3:
John, the reason why they upped the difficulty is because it's a PC release. When you are upgrading your console to a PC you are inherently upping the difficulty of your gaming, because your playing on a machine that wasn't made for kids still developing their motor functions. This game is nothing like playing the guitar, it is, as Griper said, like DDR with your fingers. It uses a disguised, albeit very effective copy protection method, that is, even if you download the game, you still cant play it without your crappy piece of plastic.
amsleeping gave it a10:
Griper, you obviously dont know the meaning of the word... "game". I don't personally enjoy DDR, but what makes you think people play guitar hero to look cool? And about people who feel that they are playing the song... isnt that the game's ultimate goal? To allow people to escape realism and make them feel special... just like chopping an orc in warcraft or driving a lambo in need for speed. You obviously are a narrow-minded person, and more embarrasingly, you proved it so by making such comments on the internet for all to see. shame. Don't mind me. just bored at the moment. Rated 10 to pull the rating back up.
Griper gave it a0:
It's DDR, which would have died out a long time ago if it weren't for people who mistakenly think it's fun. The difference is, now you have an EXPENSIVE HUNK OF PLASTIC as a controller giving the illuision that you're supposedly playing the songs instead of dancing to them. On the positive note... at least you look minorly cooler with a guitar controller than you look doing the absurd DDR "moves". Personally, I think it's 90% about the songs, 8% about people thinking they're playing the songs... and 100% about the Japanese brainwashing other country's with their subcultural. And on the note that people who gripe about DDR suck at it... obviously they do. DDR isn't about "skill" it's about practice. And spending hours Practicing just to unlock another song sounds a little too much like work to me.
John gave it a6:
Same Guitar Hero gameplay, removed co-op Multiplayer (WHY?!) added a new songlist (Most of which is terrible, but to each your own.) and upped the difficulty somewhat (Still the same difficulties - Easy, Medium, Hard and Expert but if you've played the previous games you'll notice that they are harder.) Boosted somewhat by it's online capabilities but it's still the same game with minimal improvements. Good for solo or friends play, though there are better things out there.
Muz gave it a9:
Great game from beginning to end. In fact it tends to get better as you get to the end. The difficulty curve is great, it's an easy game to pick up, very difficult to master, but you'll learn to get better at it as you play along. The game has some great songs that guys like me have been trying for years to play on a real guitar and anyone who loves animations would enjoy seeing how the band animates perfectly with the song. Many people seem to claim that it requires a good computer to play, but the game runs perfectly smoothly on my 3-year old computer.
Kristopher A. gave it a10:
Guitar hero III is the best game ever for the xbox 360, it has great graphics and great songs. And the guitar is the best yet, i like it because it is wireless and the sticker sheets are awesome!!!!!!
