Summary
[Metacritic's 2004 PC Game of the Year] By taking the suspense, challenge and visceral charge of the original, and adding startling new realism and responsiveness, Half-Life 2 opens the door to a world where the player's presence affects everything around him, from the physical environment to the behaviors -- even the emotions -- of both friends and enemies. The player again picks up the crowbar of research scientist Gordon Freeman, who finds himself on an alien-infested Earth being picked to the bone, its resources depleted, its populace dwindling. Freeman is thrust into the unenviable role of rescuing the world from the wrong he unleashed back at Black Mesa. And a lot of people -- people he cares about -- are counting on him. Valve have once again managed to transform a genre, and taken pure gaming pleasure to brand new, unthought of heights. The sheer number of moments you'll be astounded by the graphical touches, by the storyline, by the sheer polished nature of the title, and even the incredible level design is quite astounding.

Valve's inclusion of an interactive physics-based environment and the wonderful gravity gun lends itself to fun gravity puzzles, making use of good old-fashioned common sense and intuition - something I've found to be absent in the average first-person shooter.

Half-Life 2 has astonished us from start to finish. Valve has done to the FPS genre what restaurants in Chinatown do to ducks; shredded it, smothered it in a delicious sauce of their own devising, and served it up in a way which you simply couldn't have imagined when looking at them in the pond.

Represents the pinnacle of great action shooters because it strictly adheres to the one rule that makes an FPS great, the one rule that so many developers ignore, or break due to ineptitude and then conceal behind a shroud of tacked-on complexity: in a first person shooter, level design is everything.

Considering how well Valve got the action down pat, I was very unpleasantly surprised that they managed to fumble the storyline so badly. HL2 starts off with such promise and ends with something akin to what you'd find in "[deleted]" which is a travesty of a mockey of a sham, if there ever was one.

Best game ever made. SECOND TO NONE! I remember playing Half-Life. Thinking that it was the best game ever created and that no game company would ever surpass it. Then Half-Life 2 came out. HOLY CRAP!! If you haven't played this game, then you do not deserve to be called "hardcore" or a "gamer, or any combination thereof. The entire Half-Life series crushes any other game on the market and most likely any game to be introduced to the video game market for quite a while. Even Halo, which is quite overrated to be honest. Buy it. It's like what, $10 at most? Oh and get Half-Life 1 as well, and the expansion packs: Opposing Force, and Blue Shift; and get Episode 1 & 2 for HL2. Oh, and get Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead, and... Okay, okay, just make sure to get the WHOLE Half-life series for maximum enjoyment!

Quite simply an amazing game, i do not agree with mikael who gave it a 6 and said the team ai was weak, it was simply good enough to want to finish the game. Althrough the game the most fun weapon was of course the gravity gun. picking up things and throwing them around was very enjoying and throwing explosives barrels at the enemy was fantastic. Thanks Valve For making such an fantastic game.
elliot w gave it a9:
Half life 2 review Half life 2 is undoubtedly one of the greatest fps’s of all time. It may have taken a colossal 6 years to develop, but valve sure made the long wait worthwhile. Like its predecessor you are dropped into the hazard suit of Gordon freeman once more, 20 years after the first game after being placed in stasis and hired by the gman. As you step off of the train for the first time it hits you. Valve has done it again. The world, everything around you is breathing, alive. From guard brutality to scared and confused citizens, everything feels so real. It is truly a breathless sight as the dystopian world go’s on around you, and not the other way around. As you explore your new found surroundings you really become hooked, caught up in the strange, immersive, dystopian world. Valve has done it again. The graphics too, are very good. Due to this review being written based in the orange box version of half life 2 numerous graphical upgrades, such as the HDR lighting, are present. However most graphical improvements are minor, not that it matters though, even 5 years on and the graphics are still brilliant and every nook and cranny is ripe with detail and polish. For example exploring a lab located near the beginning of the game thoroughly and you would be there a good 10 minutes finding numerous Easter eggs and details. In this 1 room alone there is more care and attention to detail than is most full games altogether. Every single aspect of the levels and areas are so rammed with detail you could get lost for hours admiring all the sublime textures. The animations are also amazing. People move and walk in incredibly lifelike ways and lip syncing is perfect. Even now it would be near impossible to find a game with as impressive facial animation. This does truly bring the npc’s to life, making you have emotions for them. Very few games do this level of emotion to such great effect. The weapons are also well animated and reloads are smooth and enjoyable to watch. The viscerical thrill of seeing the barrel of your revolver fly to the heavens after you nail a tricky headshot is undoubtedly satisfying. This also ties in with the shooting (which I will get onto later) and makes combat a joy. The lighting also deserves a special mention. Every item or piece of scenery gives off a realistic shadow which greatly adds immersion. For example I was carrying a ammo crate with me using the gravity gun and entered a dark area. Naturally I turned my flashlight on and the box gave off an extremely realistic shadow. It was sensational. Other areas of the game, such as an infested and dilapidated mining town, use lighting to superb effect. It genuinely creates a dark and creepy atmosphere. Other areas where you’re travelling through a dark tunnel and see light at the end of it, only to emerge into brilliant sunshine, gives unparalleled realism. However the graphics aren’t without their faults. For example on large open spaces such as chapter 4, there is a small amount of pop up. It’s minor, but noticeable and can destroy the immersion the rest of the game so lovingly built up. Also some areas seem a little rough, such as foliage. But these are minor blemishes on otherwise great visuals. A special mention should also go to the physics engine. It is absolutely mind blowing .everything reacts like it would in real life. Bottles break in a realistic manner, wood splinters, items fall and break under a force called gravity and swings and roundabouts work like the ones at your local park. Quite a few puzzles are based round this physics engine, and it certainly makes a change from the dull ‘press the buttons in an order’ puzzles. Water is very realistic. It splashes and moves, makes waves when a heavy object lands in it, conducts electricity and causes objects to float. Like the other physics puzzles, there are a few that involve water, and there mostly a joy to solve. Sound in half life to is on the whole, very good. The voice acting from characters such as alyx or Dr Kliener is first class. The script is very well written and brings the characters to life. They feel so realistic you end up really feeling for them and their dilemmas. This also applies to various combine (the games antagonists) and resistance members, as their fantastic script really makes their characters and the force they are fighting for believable, making half life’s feel more real. Even after speaking to dozens of different citizens, the lines of dialogue were almost always different and varied. And the sound of a combines life support turning off, never ever gets old. The only black mark against the voice acting is that some NPCs sound the same. But due to the hundreds of them you meet on your journey, this is acceptable. As are the weapon sounds. Even the vanilla pistols sound meaty and ferocious, Shotguns roar and grenades go off with aplomb. Water splashes are realistic as well as explosions which dominate your sound system. The real star however is the games musical score. Most of the game there isn’t any music what so ever. But when it kicks into life it happens at just right moment. It is epic. You won’t hear better background music in any other game.Period.it really sets the mood to battles and chases. However, a good few of the sensational tracks are reused from the first game, but you won’t tend to realize as they are used to such an epic effect. Next up is the game play. As you know half life 2 is a narrative driven shooter, with various puzzles and challenges dispersing this as well as a few vehicle sections. I will start with the combat. Half life 2s combat is nothing short of brilliant. Each weapon feels utterly unique and has various pros and cons. The aiming is slick and combat is fast and responsive. Every battle is a joy to complete and you will never tire of slaying the combine. Once you pick up the gravity gun, your options really open up. Every small or medium sized object becomes a weapon. This means every battle is varied and different dependant on your environment. It is superb. But the combat isn’t without its flaws. While the 11 weapons are all good and balanced, I can’t help feel that there could be more. I really yearned for some stupid experimental weapon or satchel charge. It’s not that big of a deal to be honest. Also the enemy roster isn’t as varied or as good as half life 1. Whereas HL1 had loads of alien creatures to do battle with, HL2 has considerably less variety. You still do battle with lots of enemies, from foot soldiers to the hulking and iconic striders, so there is considerable variety. Just like the weapons, it’s only a minor issue, but it’s noticeable. The only con about the shooting system is weapons affect on an enemy. You would think that a shotgun blast to the chest would kill someone, and at least knock them back a few feet. But this form of reaction is absent. Enemies only react like this when the gravity gun is used. And it does at times seem that the weapons stopping power was reduced to encourage people to use the gravity gun more. This, despite my concerns, isn’t such a bad thing. All the gunplay is broken up with numerous puzzles. These puzzles are well executed, and revolve mainly around physics. They break up the pacing of the game, just like the vehicle sections do. Both prevent the game from becoming stale and flat and add variety to the shooting. These vehicle sections are broken up with on foot combat, which prevents the driving from becoming stale. With this system, and the subtle introduction of new weaponry, game play never becomes stale. On the other hand the vehicle controls are totally crap. It is the only time in the game when you will hate the physics engine. This does detract slightly from the overall experience, and will make you curse, but only because the rest of the game is so brilliant in comparison. However it’s strange considering that the rest of the games physics are a masterpiece and work really well. It doesn’t help that turn and accelerate are both assigned to the left analogue stick (ps3 and Xbox 360 versions) making accurate driving a real challenge, especially when you’re being pursued by a deadly helicopter. Overall, half life 2 will take you on your first attempt (on the default difficulty of normal) around 18 hours. This can be considerably higher if you intend to search for various Easter eggs and hidden ammo stashes. However despite this, there is very little incentive to replay it once you have finished. There aren’t any new difficulties unlocked or bonus weapons. That’s it. Sure there are the Easter eggs that can be found and the fact that you can replay it because it’s an awesome game. But I still found it lacking in this department. Unless of course you’re playing half life 2 on the xbox360, then there are plenty of achievements to keep you busy. This game is amazing. It is one of the greatest FPS’ of all time and will still be up there is years to come. The games pacing, graphics, physics, sound, script, combat, (well everything really) is awesome and thoroughly deserves your attention. Except two things. These have frustrated plenty of fans and I feel the same. The last two chapters. These are such an anticlimax game play wise you start to wonder if valve actually bothered and just wanted to finish early. Same for the last boss. It was a nice idea but executed poorly. It defines anticlimactic. Those 2 aspects aside, half life 2 is a superb game and worth 40 of your hard earned notes. But when you can get half life 2, its episodes 1 and 2, portal and team fortress 2 for 15 of your hard earned notes in the form of the orange box, it’s the easiest choice you will ever have. Ever. Scores out of 10 Graphics and presentation 9.5/10 Sound and score 10/10 Gameplay 9.5/10 Lifespan and replay value7.5/10 Overall score(not an average) 9.5/10.

I thought HL2 was a fantastic game, and that the water was especially impressive, although for some totally inexplicable reason they forgot to add any displacement physics, meaning that stuff put into the water mysteriously contains water even if its solid. I really enjoyed the Nova Prospekt level too. Ravenholm was tolerable, but after a while, the fun of beating headcrabs with a crowbar kinda wears off. Four things missing from this game: 1) Displacement physics in the Source engine 2) A dual-wield weapon/item hold system- anyone else remember the chair-pistol wield from Return to Castle Wolfenstein? I liked that. Also, wielding 2 pistols in Route Kanal would be fun. 3) The sniper rifle. There is actually code for one there somewhere, honest, but its not a usable weapon as there are no models. 4) Flyable vehicles. Okay, so we have a boat level, a car level, a foot level... why not stick a chopper on the roof of that building by the citadel and fly through C17 strafing the striders? Finally, I have had no problems with Steam, in fact, I love it. It makes it so much easier to have a combined game browser (all my non-steam games have shortcuts there), and a chat feature which shows the game you are playing and if it is a multiplayer game, a join the server feature. Finally a reliable game organisation and multiplayer co-ordination system that works. And yes, I've tried most of them. GameSpy is adequate. GameShadow is a waste of space. HyperLobby is tolerable. But Steam? For me, it is great. No problems ever.

This game still exceeds every wannabe first-person shooter game made after it and most likely still will for years to come. Half-Life 2 has horror, action, comedy, puzzle, and sci-fi woven into it brilliantly and beautifully around every corner. It combines every aspect a gamer could possibly want in video game. The breathtaking graphics and wonderful personality of every character make this game historical, not only for FPS standards, but for any sort of game available.

I consider 7 to be average. I mean compared to the first half of half-life the puzzles and enemies of half-life 2 are laughable and unimaginative. The only good qualities of this game is that it has good graphics and sound but that is a flaw in trying to make a lasting impression because, in the future( I can't believe it either) graphics and sound will be better than this, thus, in essence, this game is no more than a technological demonstration because its not really that imaginative.

I remember the first day I played this on Christmas Day in 2004. I was absolutely amazed by the game, and I nearly fainted when I saw the Gman's face in the opening sequence. Truly a game to remember.
