Summary

A medieval universe and non-linear scenario based on the science-fiction novel, Hard to be a God, published in 1964, by the Soviet writers Arcady and Boris Strougatsky. A role playing game cleverly combining, adventure, espionage and science-fiction. A real and living world thanks to an advanced NPC system. Encounters of great depth: the attitude toward the hero changes considering the clothes he is wearing and his appearance, opening up a wider range of dialogues and leading to different possible results. A climatic change system featuring day/night alternation. More than 200 types of weapons and 200 types of armours. Access to futurist technology replaces the magic system. Journey throughout the Empire on horse back and fight. [Nobilis]

It's easy to pick up and play, it has the most absorbing and genuinely interesting narrative I've seen in an RPG for ages, there are so many quests to discover that it will give even the most hardcore completist many hours of play and it's rare to see an RPG that doesn't rely solely on grinding for experience.

Game Chronicles

I found Hard to Be a God very intriguing with its deep story and several plot twists. The story leaves you in the dark start off the bat and slowly reveals the intricate details.

Pelit (Finland)

Hard to be a God is very hardcore old school rpg that has its moments. Mounted combat is fun, but normal combat is frustratingly difficult. The bad Borat-style translation makes for some hilarious moments but slows down the narrative at the same time. [Mar 2008]

GameZone

The game is a bit of a mixed bag – old-style graphics, minimalist sound but with an engaging story.

PC Zone UK

This is a tale best told on paper, if only because the book doesn't have such awful music and voice acting, and it isn't shoe-horned into a generic RPG template. [May 2008, p.88]

GamerNode

Hard to Be a God ix a very mixed bag. For fans of plot-heavy games, this can be a goldmine; for fans of hack n slashes with good gameplay, this can be hell.

When a game makes you alternate between screaming and laughing out loud at its faults, the rewards aren't worth the struggle. [Apr 2008, p.71]

PC Format

When you factor in the poor translation, the stupid difficulty and the poor controls it's as much fun as the black death. Hard to be a good game, more like. [Apr 2008, p.115]

Thunderbolt

The story is a compelling piece that will drag most bookworms through the many gameplay obstacles, if only to find out what happens at the end, and truth be told it really is worth the wait. Problem is, you could just go and buy the novel and save having the experience marred by a disappointing effort of a game.

Eurogamer

Between the obvious chinks in the artificial intelligence and glaring clipping anomalies (with characters walking through walls and floating down staircases), only a truly hardy adventurer will persevere. Did I say hardy? I meant foolhardy.

Play (Poland)

Interesting story and good looks won't get you anywhere if you have just the ancient keyboard and mouse to control your character fighting several enemies at the time. And there is no other way but forward, from one quest to another, so when you are blocked by a vicious bug or when a vanquished foe who clearly was swinging a sword drops a cabbage again, you can but sit and weep. [Apr 2008]
