Summary
The Dark Continent, a playground for the cruel and corrupt, each with their own agenda. Choose your friends wisely, buy an army of ruthless mercenaries and unleash mayhem on the African countryside. Hired Guns: The Jagged Edge is a turn-based strategy that puts you in command of a squad of specialists for hire in the genre’s biggest game-world yet. Choose “jobs” from different factions and complete them for cash to upgrade weapons and hire elite mercenaries. Tons of guns will let your team destroy anything standing, but smooth talk and a wad of bills can also go a long way towards ensuring success. With multiple story lines and endings, you’re in total control of your own fate. Hey! It’s a jungle out there…on the Jagged Edge. [GFI Games]

GameStar
It takes quite some time to get into the game and a lot of it will be spent loading saved games, but once you're over that stage, Hired Guns offers a lot of fun. The game feels like a graphically enhanced Jagged Alliance 2, which isn't bad - quite the opposite. Hired Guns has its weaknesses, but is appealing nontheless.

In equal parts frustrating and rewarding. [Aug 2009, p.97]
Vandal Online
Technically this is one noteworthy game, and it has a lot of customizing options for our troops, but the rest of the elements are not equally achieved.

Hired Guns: Jagged Edge is only a copy of Jagged Alliance 2. And not a very good copy. The balancing in the game is awful and the graphics are bad. Fans should play the original and not the poor copy.

Jagged Edge is truly an old–fashion tactical game designed for hardcore fans. Extremely strong enemies and missing vital combat info makes it a real challenge. [Issue#174, Jan 2009]
IGN
Overpowered enemies, underpowered weapons, breathless mercenaries and a complete lack of range and accuracy information keep the game from competing with the other titles in the genre.

So tough it's nearly impossible, and so it's almost unplayable. [Sept 2009, p.72]
PC Gamer UK
Extreme patience and a deep seated conviction that life is cruel will dig through to layered and varied experience. [Aug 2009, p.89]
AceGamez
Hired Guns: The Jagged Edge fails to achieve what it set out to do. It wanted to be a hugely tactical but still engaging squad-based affair, but the long-winded combat is boring and anything but tactical, while the audio is sure to drive you to turn the volume down and put some music on instead.

If the difficulty levels were sorted, the turn-based combat system rehashed and the player was told with reasonable conviction what the hell is going on, Hired Guns could be quite enjoyable, but as it is it's a frustrating, indecisive, low-level strategy game.

Doyle H. gave it a6:
Not bad mechanics but the atmosphere is lost in bad language translation and weak voice acting. The manual is so bad I could barely understand it. This makes it feel cheap and slapped together. However the coding seems well done. Otherwise I would have given it a 5.
