Summary
Oleg Maddox's Il-2 Sturmovik series of flight simulators continues to expand. The latest offering, Il-2 1946, adds 36 new planes, four new gigantic maps, over a hundred new ground objects, and nearly 200 new campaign missions. This new opus also includes all of the previous Il-2 series content. What began as a one-aircraft study sim is now an astonishing anthology, with a whopping 229 flyable aircraft and over 300 aircraft total! Not to mention that players will have the opportunity to get a first glance at the future of the series arriving next year: Storm of War Battle of Britain via exclusive bonus videos.

1946 might as well be the holy grail of WWII flight sims, a platinum anthology of everything good about no-frills airborne scrimmaging. The new material's a deal, whether you own the earlier games or not. And if you don't, 30 bucks nets you something that -- six years on -- still outclasses everything else.

This is the biggest and best combat flight sim money can buy, but it's by no means flawless. [Jan 2007, p.70]
Pelit (Finland)
Many of the new planes are a bit odd, although admittedly pretty fun to fly. As a collection Il-2: 1946 is a true masterpiece. The best version of the greatest simulator of all time. [Jan 2007]
Games Radar (in-house)
Aside from the half-functional multi-player and a brutal learning curve, there’s nothing about IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 that isn’t amazing. Superb aircraft flight modeling? Check. Amazing looking aircraft? Check. More than 220 different aircraft and around 200 missions? Check.

It feels like a retro collection, but it's pretty much a no-brainer for flight sim fans until "Storm of War" arrives. [Feb 2007, p.65]
IGN
For forty bucks, you can't really go wrong here, particularly since this version of the game includes every expansion that the series has seen so far. It's a shame that there's not more US or UK content here, but that's to be expected.

Excellent gameplay and an amazing level of detail should make those who enjoy flight sims giddy (and may even convert a few that aren't into amateur flyboys).

For a measly 30 bucks, you won't find a better deal anywhere. [July 2007, p.64]

Duke Nukem gave it a10:
It is the most realistic ww2 flight sim out there, it may be a pain to learn dogfighting in il2 for some who havent got the first hand experience in ww2 dogfights, but once you are through, it gives you the most genuine ww2 air combat experience,
Jared J gave it a0:
This is disgusting. I come across a lot of games with no tutorial but this is rediculous! Not only is there no tutorial, there's no controls! You are left twisting in the wind (litterly) as you fight to hold this button and push this button WHILE holding this button AND clicking! The player has no controls to put so you have no control of anything except the ESC button and hitting EXIT GAME. $9.99 is too pricy for this GARBAGE!!
Jeremy B gave it a3:
Very boring... played single player and custom game and was bored to tears.
Mark gave it a10:
This is the absolute best WW2 flight sim yet. Given the age of the engine, it is still amazingly good looking and now supports a huge modding comunity which keeps me still very interested in flying after thousands of hours on both single and multiplayer. No other sim even comes close in scope and detail. Minor flaws are the, at times, dull dynamic campaign missions and AI flying into terrain occasionally. The weather is not very detailed and has limited user controls. Forests are only visible from above, meaning you may fly into them when very close to the deck. But really, as I said the greatest WW2 combat sim ever!
Sebastian R gave it an8:
The finest flight WWII flight simulator out there. Graphics on the non-aircraft objects are dated, and the menu is horrible, but the gameplay is fantastic. I would not advise buying the game off Steam, because the latest patches are not available for download on that platform (this makes multiplayer servers harder to find).
Peter B gave it a10:
After all this time, this is still THE best World War 2 simulator out there. Period. The insane number of flyable planes, the superior physics, the realistic gunnery and dogfights. There is simply no other game that even comes close. I suspect that IL2 is going to hold that crown for a long time to come.
Ferdz A. gave it a9:
It's still fascinating and addictive even after years of playing it !
