Summary

A journey through four great mythologies, Loki allows the player to take-on the role of one of four heroes: a mighty Norse warrior, a fierce Greek fighter, a powerful Egyptian sorcerer or a skilled Aztec shaman. Each comes from a different mythological background and each has different strengths and skills and, therefore, radically different ways of fighting. During an epic adventure, the player gives battle to a multitude of enemies. Hundreds of creatures and opponents of every kind have been created for the game, so that the player is going to have to fight his/her way past skeletons, giant spiders, centaurs, mummies, harpies, wild animals, a vast array of soldiers, culminating in the showdowns with formidable bosses such as Medusa, Fenrir the wolf or Fafnir the dragon. Each boss has a particular way of fighting so the player must discover his weak points. As the hero(ine) advances through the game he/she isbe able to collect or exchange thousands of items, including 500 unique objects, such as Thor's hammer or Achilles' armour. Cheat Code Central

Despite revamping the same excellent style of fantasy RPG action found in Diablo II, you'll find Loki: HoM mixes familiar gameplay with mythological themes and some updated graphics for a lengthy quest worthy of your time. Even at the most monotonous points you'll want to keep coming back for more.

Loki is very much like "Neverwinter Nights 2" crossed with "Diablo II," with a dash of gods and mythology thrown in for good measure. If you liked these games, or other hack 'n' slash action RPGs, then you should find Loki an enjoyable experience.

This is one of those games that is very familiar, but still entertaining. Loki treads familiar ground, but still manages to provide a treat for those who enjoy a good old-fashioned hack ‘n slash.

More of a solid warrior and less of a gaming god. [Oct 2007, p.80]

Loki may be awfully late for the party, but this Diablo derivation is a solid rip-off with great game mechanics and atmosphere.

Personally, I think you need a lot of patience to understand Loki’s shady side, and an iron will in order to wait for the up-coming patches.

Armchair Empire

Loki: Heroes of Mythology may not bring anything really new or exciting to the table, but if you enjoy this sort of game you will find hours and hours of enjoyment and after all, that’s really what it’s all about isn’t it?

GamingExcellence

It really comes down to the style of gameplay that one enjoys. Loki: Heroes of Mythology echoes the experience of Diablo-esque games, that much can not be denied. The pace feels a little slower, however, and because of that, the multitude of battles fought with dozens of foes seems to take just a little too long.

Strategy Informer

What they get is what they expect; a bright and brash fighting game that keeps to the established expectations, but would have been far better suited to the repetitious, unpretentious and simplistic nature of a home console.

PC Format

A solid, if unspectacular hack and slasher. If you're looking for colourful, mindless fantasy action, this is yer man. [Oct 2007, p.56]

PTGamers

Loki is a decent game, but it faults for its monotony and immeasurable difficulty. There’s not much else to point, good or bad, in a game that is only recommended to die-hard fans of the genre.

The graphics and sound add to the game, rather than take your attention away with a goofy voice or crummy animation. For a group of dungeon crawlers, online Loki might be an ok choice eventually, if they can fix the patching issues.

You can rip off a 7-year-old game and still fall short of your ambition. [Oct 2007, p.87]

Worth Playing

As it stands, I think that judicious use of patches can iron out many of the issues with Loki. Until then, I'd still recommend it, but see if you can find it for a good budget price.

Loki makes Minesweeper feel like fun and rational pastime. A few good ideas are not enough, when the execution is this bad. [Oct 2007]

Gamer's Hell

Loki may be a simple case of a studio setting its sights too high. You can tell that it is ambitious and that passion has been put into many aspects of the game. But without some major patching, Loki can only hope to appeal to the die hard action adventure gamer or mythology buff.

Eurogamer

There's much to be said for games which simply polish an existing formula to a shine - but Loki, sadly, doesn't even quite accomplish that. It's solid, and it's competent, but unless you're absolutely crazy for point and click action RPGs, we find it hard to recommend a game on the basis of competence alone.

While not a terrible game, Loki is too mediocre to play.

This game has basically been done before and been done better. Even for hardened action RPG fans who are looking for their next fix before Diablo 3 hits, it would be difficult to recommend much about Loki that would provide them with any sort of new buzz.

While it has few specific flaws, I can only recommend Loki to lovers of endless reward-based level grinding to the exclusion of all other play...and that market just ain't what it used to be.

This game is so flawed, so monotonous and deathly, deathly dull that I'm struggling to think of any reason whatsoever to waste your time and money on it.

Megale A. gave it a9:
Fantastic, There are some bugs in the game but they are working them out. Once they find them all this game will be near perfect for any diablo fans

Patrick B. gave it a1:
Game is severely flawed. The online play will not let u register with hotmail or yahoo emails therefore alienating many online players. In my version 2 of the 4 single player characters can;t start thier questlines. In the forums I see thatmany others have various problems and theres very little support back. Furthermore the game is kinda unoriginal. Its nothing new... too many problems.... and is possibly the worst action RPG i;ve played.

Rico C. gave it a6:
Very buggy at the moment. i.e. the char stops attacking sometimes, framerate is a bit unstable too.The graphic is ok, not great, but ok. I'd say....give it a few patches and then it could be a 7 or maybe even a 8 but imho Titan Quest is way better (also the same setting...kind of).
