In Lost Planet, human snow pirates navigate VS (Vital Suits) through hostile ice-covered environments, fighting against the indigenous Akrid creatures for the precious thermal energy they need to survive. For one such pilot named Wayne, death almost seemed imminent until he was fortunately rescued. However, he can only remember a few fragments of his past including the slaying of his father by the monstrous beings. Yet under the veil of ice, a devious plan has been set into motion for the termination of all Akrid and snow pirates alike. What really happened to Wayne? Who is plotting the destructive scheme? Encounter valuable allies and dangerous enemies on Wayne's search for the truth. [Capcom]

It's not going to win any awards for its storyline, but when viewed as a series of standalone missions, it's a blast, and I believe that what it’s supposed to be.

This Xbox 360 port retains all the high-octane thrills of the original snowy adventure while incorporating features for the PC like mouse/key support and DirectX 10 effects(finally!). [Oct 2007, p.62]

Games Radar (in-house)
Shot-for-shot this is the same game console players had in January - a fantastic, hard as hell shooter that'll knock your eyes out of your head. But with no new content at all and a lack of the ultra-cool bonus multiplayer maps, we've got to dock it a bit.

ActionTrip
Even though the game may feel slightly repetitive, and the mouse lag and other minor cases of "consolitis" (performance on some systems) may annoy some gamers, the quality of the action itself and the sheer magnificence of some scenes, should prove a good enough reason to play this one.

Worth Playing
The port itself just seems to be incomplete, with the Xbox 360-centric prompts, reward tokens (previously used for 360 achievements) that now have no purpose whatsoever, and sluggish performance.

Is it worth purchasing the PC version of Lost Planet if you already own the 360 one? Not really, no. You’ll only play using your 360 controller anyway, so there’s not much point in owning both copies.

Feels like a hardened old-skool title wrapped up in some lavish next-gen visuals. Annoyances with the difficulty spikes are likely to mar the enjoyment for a fair few players, but there's still no question that Lost Planet should be experienced.

Capcom of Japan is learning from the West in their game design, and learning how to do a PC port the right way. It's clear that this is alien territory for them, and they have missed some opportunities along the way. Still, they have created an enjoyable game and a port that satisfies, even if it isn't as grand as it could have been.

Lost Planet is a great game, but the PC translation suffers quite a bit due to some conversion issues and strange production choices. If you have an Xbox 360, then definitely pick up that version over the PC port.

All in all, this game suffers from a shoddy port job along with general problems still not addressed. There are problems with the AI, general mechanics and short gaming time. Still, it's a decent action game.

Lost Planet's strong single-player campaign stands out, in spite of buggy online functionality and other missteps.

It's brief enough and silly enough that it never stops being dumb, no-strings fun. Even when your VS becomes capable of barely-steerable flight and unbearably slow-to-recharge energy swords, y'know, it's still a flying robot with swords. Also, a generically Xboxian art style aside, it often looks fantastic, the motion blur and haze of snow especially.

If Starship Troopers is your favourite film and you're looking for a new game to play for a couple of days and then use it only to prove to friends that the abilities of your brand new PC are beyond those of their next-gen consoles, then this is a suitable choice. If, however, you are looking for something more, I would look elsewhere.

The AI has some dumb moments. Several enemies remained inactive until I'd shot them three times. [Sept 2007, p.70]

If Lost Planet was a budget title, we'd have an easier time recommending it. The main campaign is short, multiplayer matches are nowhere to be found, and you'll need a lot of computing muscle if you want to run it with a decent level of detail.

But if shooter enthusiasts own a powerful gaming rig, they will not be disappointed, with a $39.99 price tag (a full $20 cheaper then the X360 version) thrown in for good measure.

So, again, PC users are treated like second-class citizens, just another source of cash for the publishers. Frankly, I’m getting tired of this attitude from the publishers, and the simplest way to show them what we think about them is to stop buying their games. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

The port job itself is incomplete at best with the Xbox 360-centric prompts and sluggish performance, and if they are fixed in a future patch, which Capcom says is coming soon, the title is easily recommendable.

For an arcade game to succeed, it really needs tight, fluid methods for moving around, something Lost Planet's often cantankerous controls, even though they're better on PC, can only daydream about. What you get here caters to the mindless action fan - huge enemies, hulking weapons, monstrous explosions, and flashy visuals.

Nothing new or genre-shaking on show here, in what is basically a port that's far too short. Give this cold planet the could shoulder. [Sept 2007, p.50]

Talk about the old sound and fury saw -- you'll finish Lost Planet too soon and won't go back for seconds. That's really the definition of why not to buy something, isn't it?

A once-reasonable game for the 360 is now a distinctly mediocre game for the PC.

Josh S. gave it a4:
It's a good game in its core, but thats it. I got it free from a friend, but i wouldn't recommended buying it unless it was on sale for less than $10. The engine is laggy, controls are shaky, and the storyline is off. I think the aspect that makes me go back to this game maybe once every two months is the fact that its a 3rd-person shooter. Just mediocre in every aspect. Plus, the online experience isn't even worth trying.

Matt N gave it a6:
This game is like Marmite, you either love it, or you hate it. There are many reasons to love it, fantastic graphics, exceptional effects, diverse range of weaponry, intense boss fights. But there are many reasons to hate it. Very short missions, story not being explained properly, etc etc. The game is very much a console game, you could configure the controls to PC, but it would really be better off not being released on the PC, the missions are rather short, although the boss fights at the end of the missions can be very exciting. If you do buy this game for PC, make sure you have a PC that can run high specification games at a reasonable level, otherwise you'll be stuck with low settings and a very small resolution. The story is rather predictable, and you always seem to know what's coming next, the game play is mediocre at best, but can be very entertaining. If you're a fan of graphics and like using heavy duty weaponry, fighting Aliens 10stories high, then this game is for you, if you want a game with an in depth story, as well as exceptional game play, then get the Half Life 2 series. Overall 6/10 as the graphics are above par and the actions is top dog.

Dalek gave it a2:
Great, another game with a crap engine. I have 2.50Ghz 2GB of ram and 2 8600 GeForce's. And this engine lags even on lowest settings, well I didn't lower the res otherwise it would suck but my pc isn't crap because it can run pretty good games. The engine sucks its laggy especially with a billion light fx, the controls are hard since it is based on an Xbox 360 game. ITS 7GB AND THAT IS ALOT.. I spent most of the time finding out where the hell to go since it is so confusing and I uninstalled the game on the 2nd part since it sucked so much, waste of time and space.

Christopher N gave it a9:
This may not be the best shooter out there, but if you're looking for a classic arcade style 3rd person shooter with DirectX10 graphics, this is a pretty good choice! If you're a fan of starship troopers you'll love this game, if not get Unreal 3 and download the titan pack.

robotech m gave it a3:
So I payed 5 dollars for this game because it was on sale... I'm considering asking for my money back. This is a classic console monkey very inline with your gaylo and other ripe off/dumbed down version of PC games. The plus side is it has good graphics and a decent story line. On the downside its very badly ported to PC. The only way to really picture how badly is your basically running in debug mode. The coding in classic console monkey fashion is sloping. It requires a very powerful PC in order to run on max setting. If they had ported it correctly and coded it correctly they could have easily reduced the requirements by 1/3 maybe as much as 1/2. The control are clunky and their is no tech support as far as I know at the time of this review. The AI is impressive...impressively stupid. If your a hardcore console monkey who likes gaylo and must have your console games on PC go for it. If your a PC gamers dig through your old games whip out DOOM2. Yeah the graphics aren't as pretty but the AI is a lot smarter.

voodoojedizin if zin gave it a3:
It's obvious they made the game part first and then they made up the dumbest storyline you have ever heard what a joke. A planet where the snow is 20 feet deep but there's cars parked all over the place I can go on and on but the whole story is just ridiculous. The graphics are OK not a real difference between direct can or direct ten or nine. The Ai is a joke I think they spent more money on advertisement and buying reviews than they did in making the game.

Betsy P. gave it a2:
Why do I have to use Steam to play this? I would already be playing if I was just using my own computer with no internet funny-business. There is No Reason that is valid - to me - to force the owners of this game to use Steam. It lacks intellect to assume that everyone will blindly follow the dictates of pompous blackguards with dollar signs for morals. HA!
