Men of War is a Real-Time Strategy game that takes place during the height of World War II. Intense battles span Europe and North Africa as gamers play as Soviet, Allied or German forces across 19 massive single-player missions. Both online multiplayer and single-player conflicts feature authentic vehicles and weapons of the era and brutal combat that will take players into the heart of the fight. The Direct Control feature allows gamers to command any single unit on the field at any time. Three evolving storylines in the Soviet, Allied and German armies, comprising 19 missions in total. Realistic models of armament and military equipment recreated in accordance with design drawings and historical documents. Pelit (Finland)
Possibly the best game about WWII, unless you want your games simplistic and easy, in which case you should settle for WII games. Like Soldiers, Men of War will be the best game no-one will buy. I hope I am wrong. [Apr 2009]
GameShark
It's not a perfect game by any accounts, but it's by far one of the better titles in my collection, and one I'm proud to recommend to fans of either action or strategy games.

This might be the most gripping tactics title I've played in getting on for a decade.

Fascinating and gripping expedition to the fields of World War Two will take your breath away because of its complexity and unsparing realism. Attention to detail will warm every heart of a true strategy fan. [Mar 2009]

So if you want to enjoy the looks of a Tiger tank and watch it perform exactly like the Discovery boys told us it did, then you don’t miss out on Men of War. For anything.

A virtuoso display of strategy game creation, and a splendid experience for gamers with a modicum of patience. [Apr 2009, p.72]

Obviously dedicated to Strategy Fans (casual gamers should avoid Men of War). Good graphics, a deep gameplay and an impressive lasting appeal makes this title one of the best RTS of this year.

It's a hard game, but that challenge and scope will be what keeps you coming back after your arse is handed to you. Again.

Men of War is a strategy game for the fans of the genre and the Second World War in its whole. Several problems in the gameplay on the other hand can ruin the game experience and will oblige the more casual gamers to uninstall the game. But who will try to go on with the game will find a wonderful and tough game able to satisfy him.

It's like watching all your favorite war movies play out in front of your eyes. Is it tedious and hard as hell? You bet it is, but it offers a view of combat that's every bit as thrilling as the more accessible strategy games that dominate the sales charts.

We might be tired of the whole WW2 fanfare, but Men of War is a great blend of action and realtime strategy for PC.

An engaging, solid RTS with mission design near perfection! But be warned: Men of War is only for experts of the genre. Anyone else will be frustrated by the hardcore approach of the game.

Men of War impresses once being played. The variety of options make Men of War a title worth noting, and its graphical quality and photography work is very praiseworthy.

The successor to Faces of War (2006) has some useful innovations on offer, but is mainly about one thing: hard-core battles of WW2. It's exceptionally difficult, but not unfair. Veterans will enjoy using the innumerable amount of tactical options at hand. There's a multi-player mode for LAN and Internet for up to 16 players and a co-op mode for up to 3 players, too.

As a strategy game, very few titles reach the epic scale and excitement of Men of War's biggest battles. [Apr 2009, p.68]

Even hardcore RTS fans will be torn about this one, adopting a “take it or leave it” approach. Those that take it will be fighting an uphill battle, one that will reward the persistent tactical player above all others.

This demanding World War II real-time strategy game delivers an epic campaign and a new take on tactical combat.

Because of the high difficulty and the dated graphics Men of War can only be recommended to hardcore strategy gamers. Those however will enjoy the game immensely.

Lack of original ideas is not damning, it just means that the work is derivative. This real time strategy has not a shred of a concept of its own, and yet it turns out quite decent. Sometimes all you need is a sensible mix of tried and tested ingredients. It's worth a try, if you want to once again command the II World War troops in Russia, Europe and North Africa. [Mar 2009]
Cheat Code Central
Men of War is not going to appeal to the casual gamer. Only hardcores will be willing to attempt to crack this nut – it almost cracked this nut.

Not really a ten because of the terribly bad voice of the characters in the cinematics and because of lack of skirmish mode, but will add the 0.5 to the correct 9.5 rating cause in my option it's like the best RTS since Cossaks European War (also made by russians if I'm not wrong). Gameplay is almost like watching a war movie, except that you're actively participating as a 'supreme general'. Love the idea of direct control, which gives it some RPG -Commandos- feeling. Nice Nice Nice!
Glen A gave it an8:
MoW is computer Wargaming at its best with a level of realism so unforgiving that it makes me cringe. Often is the case where you’ll leave your men for a few seconds and come back to find them dead. Anyone who enjoys micro managing or is good at it will find this game a breeze but for the casual gamers out there don’t even attempt to touch MoW because you’ll be running back to COH within one mission. For all its flaws the game is appealing and entertaining if you’re into this kind of genre of games. The game is stressful to say the least and the single player is on the levels of old Command and Conquer games with its cheesy cinematics and ruthless difficulty, but the doesn’t stop it from having a sort of nostalgic charm to people who like me played the crap out of their Close Combat games (If you don’t know what those are you can skip this part.). The game feels like it were the sequel to the series with its attention to detail and complete ruthlessness with your armor. You have to micro-manage your troops and keep close taps on them or else you will walk them into an ambush. The great part is that the AI doesn’t suck as bad as it did in the Close Combat games, so anyone who enjoyed the Close Combat series should seriously give this game a try. The multiplayer is where this game really shines, its deployment system is ludicrously simple though I would suggest you have a pretty steadfast knowledge of WW2 vehicles or else it will take you some time to figure out what to deploy which could cost you. The game modes are extremely reminiscent of COH except everything is much harder to assault as your units can easily get trounced by well set up defenses. Unlike in COH the size of the tank doesn’t mean either results or that it will survive for more than a few seconds, so it’s easy to get annoyed.

I have played more RTS games than any one gamer i know ( and i know lots of gamers ). So the moment i tried it, i knew that i've fell upon a gaming masterpiece. It is truly realistic, plus the multiplayer is very organized, and most of all the gaming experience never perishes, wether in singleplayer or multiplayer. I hope an upcoming sequel this might get my rating of 10/10. Sincerly, Gamer
anonymous gave it a6:
This game is by far the most infuriating thing i have ever played. It's always nice to see game balance, AT guns out ranged by tanks.. who knew! Individual unit control is cool, along with ammo and the likes, but it would be nice if the damn useless AI picked up guns and ammo on the way, instead of having to make every God damn one pick up ammo. Voice acting is rather... odd. There is far to much micromanaging involved to be considered a good RTS. The game is good when you consider the price, but if they had spent more time fixing the problems and a few things then it could of been a great game.
anonymous gave it a0:
Horrible voice acting annoying interface, bad graphics and a stupid AI this game is crap if you want a good World War 2 Strategy game play Company Of Heroes which has a better engine good voice acting, Intelligent AI, Challenging missions and better graphics
Stig J gave it a2:
The singleplayer is ok, lots of units, lots of dept, just a shame its getting ruined by the PATHETHIC AI. Also noticed theres no skirmish option in this game, why? Cause theres no AI. Multiplayer is another joke, basicly you can set up custom matches and thats it, no ranking, no automatch, no nothing, just custom matches where you can play against preset teams of ppl on teamspeak, BORING. Theres a beta build out witch implements automatching, but its basiacally worthless, half the time the automatch server is down, and when its up it maches you totally randomly, so 90% of your games are gonna be against ppl WAY above your lvl, WAY below, or simply with 500 ping so it becomes one big lagfest. All in all, nice unit variety, nice dept, nice micro options. Just a shame both single and multiplayer is a joke wich leaves this game as total fail. Back to COH I go.
Jack gave it a10:
Amazing game. It's not for traditional RTS fans, and it's not for traditional shooter fans. It's a completely unique style of gameplay. Once the action starts it's really frantic, just like real war. You're always on your toes and there's always something to surprise you.
