Summary

As many highschools, Leafmore High is no longer the highschool it used to be. Its walls are mouldering, its books are outdated, its teachers have lost their faith... Following the disappearance of one of their friends, a group of students decide to investigate their high school. This brave step will lead them into a hell they will never forget. But, no matter what happens, they must stick together if they want to throw light on the dark and sordid history of their school. Play five different students, alone or in cooperation, every one of them having their own special aptitude, and use them wisely to defeat the monsters creeping around. [Hydravision]

Just Adventure

You won’t find horror that creeps under your skin here, like you would in "Fatal Frame 2" or "Kuon" for example, but you will find a game with great and spooky atmosphere and a disturbing story.

Game Chronicles

The first teen survival horror game to date, and a game that is one of the creepiest on the market today and one that will keep you on the edge of your seat with it’s great sound effects, solid graphics, amazing black aura effect, and some truly disturbing faceless creatures.

PC Format

Obscure rewards innovation over frenzy, and it seems only fair to do the same in return. [Dec 2004, p.94]

78

PC Gamer

ObsCure's smell of teen spirit freshens up a staid and stodgy genre. [July 2005, p.62]

75

Play Magazine

There's no better fodder for the boneheaded premise of old-school RE... than the high school slasher flick, and ObsCure serves it up right. [May 2005, p.50]

74

PGNx Media

Obscure doesn’t attempt to do anything different. Hydravision is comfortable with crafting a respectable survival horror game and Obscure fits that profile well.

Worth Playing

It does some new things that should've been improved upon a long time ago, and it's the only game on the market right now that offers double-player monster-blasting action with this kind of setting, but you might find that it's just too hard, too annoying or too rough-edged to hold your interest.

AceGamez

A solid survival horror game that takes the classic formula and adds a couple of cool innovations. It's more of an upgrade than an evolution, but the American high school setting feels fresh and is very well put together, with smooth graphics, a nice balance of shooting and exploration and a story that, while very generic, just about holds your attention.

Total Video Games

It’s very much like a video game equivalent of the teen-horror genre - whilst it does make you jump in places, it won’t give you nightmares.

Sydney Morning Herald

The fact that the characters are so annoying makes it quite enjoyable to see them meet their makers, but it's wise to protect them for as long as possible.

GameZone

The story line is interesting but it’s not something that you haven’t seen in a horror film already. Obscure will be more than enough for gamers looking for their next scare, but will leave other gamers looking for more.

Xequted

The graphics are purty, the control is decent, the voice acting isn't half bad, and the story's even pretty good. And two player co-op, come on! What more do you people want?

GameSpot

While this textbook copy of the Capcom classic is a competent regurgitation of the genre's clichés, your patience will be tested by déjà vu from the moment that the first monster bursts out of the walls.

G4 TV

It's sad to see the interesting features such as light versus dark and co-op play get shunted to the sidelines in favor of the same stuff we've been experiencing for years.

Game Informer

Many points where the puzzle design, level layout and management of the teens' special skills are just plain clumsy and almost unusable. [June 2005, p.127]

Gamer's Hell

From the buggy control schemes to the monotonous gameplay, any gamer will be left with much to be desired.

1UP

Aside from the dynamic object interaction and music, the graphics and gameplay made me feel like I was back in high school, playing "Resident Evil 2" after doing my homework. But that was then, and this is now, and Obscure just doesn't make the grade.

Computer Gaming World

Frightful fun is ultimately obscured by an even more frightful co-op camera. [Aug 2005, p.88]

games(TM)

Horror muted by brevity and flat atmosphere... Imitating teen-horror movies is a novel idea, but duplicating their running time and feeble horror leaves the game wanting. [Nov 2004, p.106]

40

Computer Games Magazine

Despite some appealing graphics, a few compelling moments, and a budget price tag, the reasons to buy Obscure remain...well, you know. [July 2005, p.55]

25

PC Gameworld

Dated visuals, bad voice acting and an impossible control scheme. Best to stick with the original game.
