The effort put into the depth of control of this game is very apparent. Each of the four modes of racing controls in subtly different ways, and racing aficionados will definitely be able to tell the difference.

ProStreet dips its tow into semi-professional racing, but remains an accessible and thrilling slice of on-track action. [Jan 2008, p.68]
1UP
But it's that wholly rebuilt, almost-a-sim physics engine that propels ProStreet to such heights. Tossing these weighty sedans and exotics around, knowing you're connected to the road by just four distinct contact points, then late braking into a turn and riding the very limits of adhesion through it, is ungodly fun -- and darned challenging.

One year of game development probably wasn't enough. ProStreet has several weak points regarding technical execution, diversity and game balance. All in all, it's a good, but not great racing game, which doesn't do it's big name credit.

As a stand-alone racer, a competent console conversion; maybe a bit repetitive in the long run, but still a fair effort from EA.

I was expecting something else from the Need for Speed series and, although it’s not a bad game, ProStreet goes into territories where there are strong competitors and, in this types of battles, it doesn’t come out on top.

ProStreet delivers a deeply enjoyable ride, but it would have been considerably more rewarding without the restrained(and ultimately compromised)physics. [Feb 2008, p.74]
GameZone
Need For Speed ProStreet is barely a worthy sequel to the last 3 strong releases from EA. Mediocrity bleeds through the edges in almost every aspect of this release.

A disappointing effort in a franchise that has generally been rather solid. It sort of feels like EA is starting over again, leaving the open-world aspects to other games like its own Burnout Paradise, but is seems like Black Box didn't know what to do with what was left.

ProStreet is a solid racing game, but it has some performance issues and is missing most of what made the previous games in the series interesting.
Examining the series, we can’t but name this ProStreet as the ugly duckling of Need For Speed. EA tried to break some principles, therefore getting in the way of other great racing games, but clearly failed.

Customization and realistic damage represent modest signs of progress and they make the gameplay interesting for a while. These additions, as I'm sure most of you will agree, fail to compensate for all those things that made ProStreet's predecessors shine - free-roam driving, outracing the cops, story-driven gameplay and so on.

In terms of the Need for Speed series, this is a dud note. [Feb 2008, p.79]
Gone are the open environments. Gone are the police chases. Gone are the FMV cut-scenes. Prostreet probably excised so many features with a view of taking things in a fresh direction, but the result is a bewildering one. [Jan 2008, p.60]
GameSpy
Honestly, we still prefer Most Wanted to ProStreet even though ProStreet offers significantly improved tire smoke that actually wraps around the wheel wells of your car, because Most Wanted had cops that chased us and provided a really compelling reason to drive as fast as humanly possible.

ProStreet isn't a bad game, it simply doesn't hold a candle to its competition, and Need for Speed fans will be left wondering where all the fun has gone from the illegal, turned legal, street racing series.
Read Full Review >PC Gamer UK
Without the old brill, open world and silly plot, ProStreet's mediocrity has no place to hide. [Jan 2008, p.76]
Boomtown
By taking out the two aspects of the series that made it stand out from the slew of other racing games on the market, Need For Speed ProStreet ends up as an exercise in mediocrity and offers nothing new or remarkable.

John C. gave it a6:
When I picked up this title I expected a street racing game (like the title implies) I was disappointed to find it just a normal racing game. The announcer was annoying, but the racing was fine. If you are looking for a regular racing game you might enjoy this, But for the fan of the previous street racing games, This is not for you.

Stuttering, low fps, unplayable, even at lowest settings. sometimes i cant even get past the first few menus to get into a race running: xp 32 bit amd 3200 1g ddr2 nvidia 6600 256mb (various drivers tested).
Ryuujin R. gave it a7:
What's good: - Graphics. - Performance damage in car from NFS: High Stakes is back. - Wide variety of cars from many brands. - Tuning variety only bested by NFS Underground 1 and 2. - Performance tuning improved but still less than NFS Underground 2 - Normal difficulty. - Most realistic NFS of all times. (management and driving experience especially) What's bad: - No more free roaming. - (For many) No more cops. - Somewhat boring progression of story and completely unrelated to the previous NFS. - Unability (as in NFS Carbon) to make ANY car as good as other. (Blame on tier division and performance packages that should improve any car to the maximum) - Too many beginner guidance (thank god it can be removed) My view point is that (as many other companies) EA went too far in graphics and visuals and didn't really care about a goos story. Still I congratulate them for achieving the most realistic car response I have ever seen. I don't bother that they have made the story "legal" but it lacks the "illegal" touch that the 4 previous NFS had.
[Anonymous] gave it a5:
The physics engine is average. The music is VERY good. The graphics are nice. The gameplay is boring.
Leonardo M. gave it a0:
Give my money and my time back. This is the Worst NFS ever. I've uninstalled it and returned to play NFS:most wanted.
Anthony C. gave it a4:
Well what do i say i love the nfs games but this one just left me wanting to go and get my money back. i was well desapointed that free roam had gone and they turned the game in so a driving sim like a F1 game boring as heck the game is now. but i like the damage part good to see the finally put that into the game. think nfs carbon is the best on they done up to date.
Turtle King gave it a0:
This is the LEAST FUN I have ever "had" in a "game". The graphics are jumpy, the cars are bland, the DJ is annoying as hell and everything that was ever any fun from previous Need for Speed games has been removed to leave only a dull, annoying, unplayable husk.
