Summary
The Skill Stick gave you the power to deke the goalie in NHL 07 – now you can own the 1-on-1 matchup and undress opposing defenseman with complete control Use your stick to push the puck into space and walk around your defender. Once you're all alone in front, improved stick handling and shooting accuracy will give you the toolset to beat your goaltender for that decisive goal. Dynamic AI adjusts to your every move both on offense and defense, promising to challenge even the most skilled hockey players. The intelligent CPU scouts your tendencies like a coach and makes the necessary adjustments to shut down your money plays, forcing you to adjust your style of play. New analog speed control of the left stick gives you the variance you need to glide into the zone with control or get a burst of speed to step up on a defender. With new skating animations and responsiveness, you have the control to perform crossovers to maintain speed or carve tight turns for an immediate change in direction. 29 AHL teams – the top developmental league for the NHL – are exclusively featured and fully playable. Develop your talent with their minor affiliate until you are ready to call them up for the show. Be the GM and manage your team from the ground up while staying under the salary cap. PC Zone UK
One of the better games from the consistently recommended franchise. [Dec 2007, p.80]
PC Gamer UK
A perfectly adequate console port. [Nov 2007, p.84]
PC Format
Give it a go when it's come down in price if you're desperate to have the new rosters, otherwise stick with 07. [Nov 2007, p.56]
Boomtown
Somewhat tellingly, there isn’t much more to say about NHL 08 – it’s a very good game, but the genre’s moved on and once again PC gamers haven’t been given the chance to see how.

Still, NHL 08 manages to be an entertaining e adequate ice hockey game, and will remain as a valid choice for PC players who can’t afford the alternatives available in next-gen consoles.

A pretty average affair. Fun can be had if you’re really into your hockey, but there are better games to choose from.

NHL 08 offers up a few control tweaks and minimal updates to the dynasty mode, but that's about it.

EA Sports has once again screwed PC owners over with a cut-rate edition of one of its big fall sports games, and NHL 08 is even more of a disappointment than its football and golf comrades. [Holiday 2007, p.83]

I. P. F. gave it a10:
I don't know what all of these boobs are talking about.. this game is much better than 07. The player animations are so much crisper and all gameplay is devistating. 10 from me!
Randy W. gave it a3:
After watching the trailers I was really excited to download this... Bad choice. Identical to 07. Maybe a tad slower and less responsive. I was expecting new player creation and puck control... but no... nothing. I've gone back to 07 and wish I could have my $40 back.
Chris K. gave it a4:
So disappointing... Graphics/Sound/Interface not updated from 07. The controls actually seem worse. I feel like I have been stolen from.
Eirc gave it a5:
As has been said, this is almost an identical game to 2007 (which was pretty close to 2006 itself). The one improvement seems to be in the physics -- the puck reacts and bounces a little more realistically, and the players hit more realistically... both which combine to make for slightly harder scoring -- something that was needed after '07.
beekay kaybee gave it a1:
Do you have NHL 07? Then you already have NHL 08. If new music and different-coloured menus are worth $40 to you, then this game is a must-have. The game is near-identical in every possible way. They didn't change a thing, right down to the cutscene animations before, during, and after the game. Embarrassing.
[Anonymous] gave it a7:
If you have 06 and enjoy it, leave this one at the store. You'll hear the same dialog for the most part, it looks pretty much the same, though the new hybrid controls are an ok addition, just not worth $40. $20? Maybe... If you haven't purchased a game from this series in a long time, give it a shot. I've had some controller issues, but I'm not sure of the cause yet. (Saitek p3000)
